Starting from Elden Ring, to Dark Souls 1, to Sekiro, to DS3, to this, this may be the one Souls game I may never finish.
Dark Souls 2 is widely considered to be the black sheep among the Souls games, and for some very good reasons. Dark Souls 2 has some greater challenges to overcome, but they don't feel difficult in the sense of different approaches being better for different situations, but more like ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ difficulty. Dark Souls 1 was decently hard and had great challenges, excusing the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, but DS1's bs was few and far between (Anor Londo archers, Bed of Chaos, bonewheels in Ariamis sewers). This game feels like it saw the rhetoric around the first game being hard, (which looking back now, when I refused to play because it was "hard", the difficulty seemed completely overblown) and doubled down on being difficult, only to overtune and make it ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ as a result, especially poison, being more dangerous than toxic in the first game. This game isn't trying to challenge you, it's trying to kill you, over, and over, and over again. Making a new character and seeing the opening cutscene, I really like how it shows what going hollow is like, memories from your past life literally melting away as the branded undead wander aimlessly. It makes the experience of hollowing much more terrifying, and gives the undead a reason to fight to break the curse. Unfortunately this is about all the praise I can give, there could be more I liked, but the experience was so unfun that I didn't notice or couldn't care. Hollowing as a mechanic comparing DS1 and 2 show how completely different both games treat death and multiplayer. In DS1, hollows looked withered, their skin barely over their bones. Using humanity to reverse hollowing gave your character a more human appearance, allowing you to kindle bonfires for more estus, and allowed you to summon other players and npc's to fight alongside you, while also allowing you to be invaded by other players and npc's, and if you died human, you went back to being hollow, cutting off the aforementioned mechanics. It expected you to die, gives you ways to prevent death, but wasn't overly punishing if you did die. In DS2, hollows look like generic zombies, and it doesn't matter whether you're human or hollow, you WILL be invaded. And dying? If death prevented you from summoning and kindling, but also prevented invasions in DS1, death in DS2 still allows invasions, but also lowers your health. What. The. ♥♥♥♥. If invasions in DS1 are about dark spirits hunting to steal humanity, I don't know what purpose invasions serve in DS2 other than killing the player. Enemies and aggression are also vastly different between the two games. Enemies in DS1 had slow attack speeds, had long telegraphs, unless it was a jump attack, didn't track very well when dodged, and usually swing once or twice. In DS2, enemies attack much faster, have much shorter telegraphs, and have damn near perfect tracking while dodging, and since dodge i-frames are tied to a stat, you can be hit even while in the dodge animation. The gameplay is a major downgrade from the first game, and if the gameplay sucks, I find it hard to care about the world and the story. This might sound extremely strange coming from someone whose first Souls game was Elden Ring, but the world of Drangleic feels too big, so many places and yet none of them seem to be the main path or a side area, where the hell am I going? In the other games I listed at the top, it was easier to tell if the area I was in was the main path or a side area, but in Drangleic it's very easy to get lost. The gameplay is a downgrade from DS1, hollowing gameplay wise went from having the option to choose to kindle bonfires and summon others at the risk of being invaded or forgoing that, to being invaded anyways and losing health on death, on top of a world so big no place seems to be the main path, and so I find it hard to care about the world and the lore. I don't care about Velstadt, I don't care about the world, I don't care about the bosses. Dark Souls 2 is not a game that tries to challenge you like it's predecessor did, Dark Souls 2 is a game that just wants to kill you, over, and over, and over again.
Going back to this it's the best "souls" game by Fromsoft. The hate is overblown by people that refuse to engage with the game.
This is my favorite FromSoftware game. Ignore my play time, I played it on a cracked version. The dlcs are absolute peak including the bosses inside. the level design is difficult, but really well-thought. Being able to appreciate this game is proof that you spent time playing it and making the most out of every playthrough. Not to mention that no other game has ever conveyed such sense of insignificance. Since the start you are told that you are nothing special, soon will hollow and you will lose souls again and again. In my opinion this introduction is beautiful and really feels unique compared to the other games. The feeling of going from just another bearer of the curse to an absolute unit is very well transmitted across the entirety of the game. You gradually start to feel growth in your character every step you make feels like development. The game is also very light, suitable for weak or old pcs. I ran it only on Ryzen 5 5600G with integrated graphics and it well as smooth as butter. 9/10 would always recommend.
100% this game is a true test of your sanity, this game is peak! but it's true that it has flaws :) very cool map and very cool bosses but maaaaaaaaaaan some of the enemy placement is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ AWFUL. also on NG++ and NG+ some of the bad areas with AWFUL spawns just get even worse.... even with that I think this game is great! DONT SKIP DS2 ITS PEAK (PEAK SOULS 2). So much charm and fun :) top 3 game ive played ever. DS1 lvl of cookery
actual ♥♥♥♥
