I'm recommending this ONLY because the game is on sale and I decided to get the ultimate edition of this for 15 which adds more missions and because Steam doesn't have a mixed option (It's been around 20 years, Valve. This is getting pathetic). Only a yes or no option, thus limiting my choice to something I don't want to give the game. It follows the EDF weapon leveling formula with all of it's parts dropping and general farming formula. The only difference is, there's not hordes of mechs to fight like there's hordes of bugs and aliens to kill like in EDF. Now, I want to address the biggest concern for this game: The controls. TLDR: It's not nearly as bad as many people are complaining about and many of the complaints are severely disingenuous and leave out a lot of context. Also, if you've played EDF or other games with heavy levels of customization, you've played this game. You can also experience everything the game has to offer very early on after a few missions after the tutorial. You don't need 50+ hours to form an opinion if you've actually played video games in general - or at the very least - other mech customization games. I use KBM and... maybe it's because I spent nearly 4.7k hours on PSO2NGS's character creation, but, the mech customization for this game isn't remotely as bad as people complained about. I use the enter key, wasd keys and the arrow keys when customizing my mech and using my mouse to drag the scroll bar on the list of parts to find what I'm looking for really fast. The ease of customization with these keys is surprisingly easy to use. But, again, this might be because of my time with PSO2NGS using the same control scheme. I compare the controls to PSO2NGS specifically because that game has objectively one of the best, if not the best character customization in video game history and while this game isn't on the same level, it has a very similar mech customization system that is worthy of comparison. Not just that, but, general gameplay controls are also not nearly as bad as people complained about - not to mention you can just change them to be what comforts you the most, eliminating the inconveniences you're experiencing. I haven't remotely felt like this game is as unplayable due to the controls as many have complained about. (Then again, I'm not surprised there's a lot of people that just never played a video game in their life) The movement controls are "jank" and that extends as far as the kind of leg part you have equipped at the time. Which, makes freaking sense. You give yourself a car, a bus or a tank as your legs and you're not going to have free 3 Dimensional movement. It's going to be jank trying to strafe WHILE YOU'RE LITERALLY DRIVING A CAR OR TANK. (Even then, I just jumped and hovered around because it's THE superior general movement option that is given to you, thus, eliminating the majority of the jank. It's safer to be in the air at all times than it is to try strafing with a vehicle for legs. Jank is the point. Not the problem. You made the decision to use a vehicle for legs and you don't want to adapt to it.) I just can't in good faith side with all the people that are complaining the controls are the worst part of this game. It was one of the main reasons it took me so long to get this game due to my apprehension of it's "problematic controls". What I'm trying to say is, you brought this upon yourself with your customization decisions and lack of desire to adapt to your own jank. This is 100% avoidable. Now, some of the complaints being "but all of my main weapons and sub weapons fire at the same time when I push the buttons for the main or the sub weapon instead of how I want them to shoot individually". You're basically asking for a nightmarish control scheme that isn't realistic and will piss you off to the point you're going to complain about it regardless because you did it to yourself. You want a specific button for every single weapon you put on your mech which is arguably comparable to MMO levels of skill bar bloat with an even worse UI. This also doesn't compare to Gundam Breaker 4 because you can have a lot more than 8 weapons at a single time and even then, GB4 can feel clunky and jank with it's controls for l1r1 and l2r2 and how it translate into actual gameplay given all of the different scenarios in which you won't have access to those weapons if you use certain weapons that eject body parts, making it even more jank to deal with. Dialogue: Yeah. This is cancer. It wouldn't be so bad if it was English dubbed and had better writing than the equivalent of generic, boring anime writing. Nobody ever has anything worth saying and when they do say stuff off-mission related, like, just bantering, none of it is funny or interesting and I wish they'd just stfu. The tone is the biggest complaint I have with the banter and whenever someone wants to speak to you over the radio and all you hear is the most annoying "AHHH AHHH AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!"... I don't know who the hell in Japan thinks that this is a good use of a radio, but, never give them one. Never give them a phone. Never give them a microphone period. They also shouldn't be allowed to do any kind of writing either. Because this is apparent in a lot of Japanese anime as well and it's beyond cringe. You also never hear that in any other localization of media. The worst part about this is, they talk almost the entire time and you're expected to read the subs or blatantly ignore what is being said WHILE you're in active combat instead of standing by for the next wave! The mech itself constantly telling you you're boosting (YES, I FECKING KNOW. I PRESSED THE BOOST BUTTON.) or other mech dialogues of literally anything I do is insufferable. The best decision you can make is to turn off dialogue sound. Which is a completely different concept from the previous complaints I addressed. It's not the same. Turning off an entire audio setting because of an inconvenience is a completely different concept from changing a control scheme to what you want it to be to be comfortable because it's a feature you're still interacting with after changes are made. In this case, you're just straight up TURNING OFF parts of your audio and never interacting with it again. You'd think this wouldn't be that big of a deal. But, considering just how heavy the dialogue is in this game while you're playing, it's a severe detriment. Then again, you don't really ever play these games for the story to begin with. But, it's not 'just' the story dialogue from all the idiots talking to you through your speakers that is the problem. IT'S YOUR MECH ITSELF CONSTANTLY TALKING TO YOU WHENEVER YOU DO REMOTELY ANYTHING!!!!!!! One of the biggest complaints I have that contradicts the entirety of this game's premise: Weight limits. Yes, you're actually restricted on just how much you can make your mech. This game isn't nearly as freely customizable as it is advertised. It completely contradicts everything this game stands for. You can't even go into a mission overweight either. Even if it's 1 weight over. I want to make the most absurd mechs imaginable. I can, however, I can't actually use them. I can only piss around with them in test mode. I can't take them on missions. The messed up thing is, your severely overweight mech works flawlessly in test mode. But, you can't use it during actual missions. It's BS. I want to have a hundred arms and legs holding weapons, but I can't because of weight limits (Also there is a limited number of parts you can add, but, the game doesn't tell you this until you stumble upon it yourself). It's my biggest complaint, but, in the grand scheme of things, it's... I don't want to say "minor" or "insignificant". I think I want to say it's a mild inconvenience. Maybe I'll have even more to say about this game as I play more of it. But, overall, I'm really enjoying what I'm playing so far, surprisingly enough.
I had read the comments and still decided to try to buy the game on sale (about 9€). After 75 minutes I stopped playing, and after consulting with my pillow, I came to a conclusion: ask for a refund. I had a really good time with EDF4 and EDF5 so I thought that, despite some drawbacks, the game would be decent enough to play but that's the main problem. I thought I was used to the problem of not mapping the controls and that it wouldn't affect me but I didn't know they meant this. Pros: * The mecha creation and customization system is pretty good. Except for the big problem that took me out of the game. Cons: * The controls. You can't map different weapons to different buttons like you could do with the Fencer in EDF, where you could fire your left and right weapon independently. That's what I was looking for. What you have is categories of weapons. MAIN weapon which encompasses the two weapons you carry in your hands and any weapon that falls into that group. They ALL fire with the same button, at the same time. Then in another button there are the LOCK and in another one the MELEE (I didn't get to try them) and then there is a last category that is the CRITICS that allows you to select a weapon, only one, and separate it from the group to another button. If, for example, the weapons you want to shoot separately are in the MAIN category, forget it. Forget about the Fencer that allowed you to carry a long-range weapon in one hand and a short-range weapon in the other and use them according to the situation. That doesn't work here. You are going to fire the shotgun and the long-range rifle with the same button even if you only want to fire one. (And if there is a way I have not seen it). For me that has ruined the game. I liked, and very much, the creation of mechas but it's useless if in order to advance in that feature you are asked to play a game that in the end will be to aim and press the same button repeatedly to launch all your arsenal to the same enemy. That level of control customization is missing and that's what made me ask for a refund. So if you're expecting anything like the EDF experience here, I don't recommend it. I honestly think it has potential and although I don't think they will fix the problems in the game, I would love for the developers to take note of this mistake and if they decide to go ahead with a sequel they will fix them in the next installment.
I expected EDF with custom mechs instead of classes I got an extremely repetitive shooter with constant japanese voices in the background
If you like building mechs you'll like this game. the game itself is mediocre but the mech building is AMAZING!
Don't buy unless for 15 or less. Over 15 I DO NOT recommend!
Game is great for diddling around with mechs... not much else. Huge massive negative that I really hate! Is you encounter the final boss from mission zero! The jank as ♥♥♥♥ camera controls. On top of that the mech customization part ain't a thing for the first several hours it seems. Can't do weapon groups or anything Not gonna go on about graphics and ♥♥♥♥ but this don't got graphics nor gameplay to back up the incredibly dated look
Pros: you can make Mobile Armor-tier abominations Cons: the game itself is one big abomination. You'll tend to end up making the same kinds of armored clumps with guns sticking out like you're parodying evolution's carcinization trends. You could go fashionable, but this won't help you to speed up through the mindless combat, and mindless combat is all there is in this game. There's no proper weight or momentum to the vehicles' movement, the SFX and VFX feel weaker than EDFs' somehow, the melee is practically the same as short-range ranged attacks (except you'll get repetitive animations for the limbs or the parts), it's not the fun kind of jank here. It's also quite buggy. At some point during a boss battle, the game freaked out and all my guns started shooting only westward no matter how I reoriented myself, while the boss got completely invincible until I restarted the mission. Paintjob customization is very unhandy and can make you cancel all of your changes at once if you're not careful enough. The devs and staff made an attempt, but I can't stress it enough that the game might be only worth it at 99% discount, maybe...
Even with the 80% discount this game is a hard sell. Now, it is a bit sad to leave a negative review as this game does have good points, but personally, I found that this game really struggled to be worth the time invested into it, let alone the money. It is functional, but that's about as good as I can call it. Might be worth to some with the discount, but otherwise I would recommend looking elsewhere. The word "tragedy" is a very succinct summary of this game. For every thing this game does right it almost certainly fails to capitalize on or even finish implementing it. Let's start with mech customization. I am not a nut for making nice-looking models, but the customizer seems potent enough, and, according to other reviewers it has just enough stuff to let you make a decent mechs. Really, the only complaint I can offer here is that the customizer does not support mouse to move the camera around, and using arrow keys makes it feel really cludgy. Customizer does not really give much of a bother about anything, you can attach everything almost anywhere, clipping be damned. There are only a few, quite liberal, limits, and a simple max-weight mechanic. I think this is the only game that let me equip 10 miniguns at the same time, and the fact that something so fun-sounding as this is not enough to squeeze out a recommendation should be telling. But let's say you made your mech and you want to go take it out into the field now. What awaits you is a very clunky, boring, and sometimes baffling, experience. The main, and the most debilitating problem is that all weapons have an incredibly short range. I do not think there are many weapons that shoot past 200m. Because of this, rifles simply outclass every other weapon you might want to use as they strike hard and strike far. Even something like a rocket launcher simply explodes once it reaches range, and stuff like mines has a forced few-second fuse that makes them explode prematurely. There is simply no reason to use anything other than rifles, because rifles outrange most enemies, and enemies hit quite hard if you come close. Aiming is quite frustrating because mouse controls are either very stiff or very fast, best way I can describe it is as if you have low sens with high mouse accel, so it is very hard to start moving but once you do you go flying. The aim reticle is really a suggestion as your weapons fire from where they are, and if you happen to attach them to a part that moves they will fire all over the place randomly. Weapons have ammo that is very easy to run out of, which is how I guess the game tries to force you to swap mechs. There is nothing you can do about the ammo because all weapons are split into 2 firing groups and all fire at the same time (+melee group, but that does not have ammo). At best you can set one weapon as "critical" to give it a different button, but the rest will belong to one of the two preset groups. You do not really get the time to swap mechs as enemies concentrate only the player unless there is a decoy active (which there is a limited number of on the map that you first must capture), or they have other objective to kill (that will fail the mission if they do). In particular, they will actively ignore your allies, and charge straight at you. That is, if they spawn with an active AI, as sometimes enemies spawn literally braindead. Your allies are not only useless, but downright harmful as they stick to you like glue and ♥♥♥♥ up your dashes. For some reason there is a time limit to waves, which, while generous and I never really exceeded I can not understand the reasoning for. Enemies have pre-determined spawn locations and do not give even a sliver of a damn if you happened to be near. This means that the game is not below spawning a death-ray mech right behind you that obliterates you immediately. One mission actually spawns you right in front of an enemy that will nuke you if you do not move within 1s of getting control. Mech parts are, of course, as one might expect, drop as random boxes from enemies that you must pick up. While there is a shop that allows you to buy any part you want of any rank as long as you had seen at least one copy, the economy is so oppressive that you really can't do much with it without extreme grind, think one-two missions per weapon part, which are the cheapest. Stuff around the mech combat, which is the story, voice acting, map usage, etc, I do not have complaints about. I think only Japanese VA is available, but I found it to be quite alright. Story is serviceable, nothing too extraordinary, but that's not why you would want to play this game. Maps seem to be reused, but honestly, that is not a significant problem. In total there are 40 missions, plus 10 in the EDF DLC. Game forces you up to tier 3 difficulty out of 5 on your first playthrough, and that only drops parts for small mechs. Parts for bigger mechs drop at difficulties 4 and 5, and while that would have been a complaint, bigger mechs felt so depressing that honestly that was a good thing it limited your access to them during the first playthrough. Difficulties are sane, enemies do not seem to become significantly tankier, but do seem to damage harder (which is a no-issue since you outrange almost everything anyway) Total playtime is about 15 hours with the EDF DLC, about 10-12 without. To summarize, this game had great ideas, but it ran them completely into the ground with poor execution and design choices. It is functional, and one could play it, just that the game does not really offer you anything for the time you put into it. I guess one note is that EDF fans might want to witness the EDF DLC of this game because they made EMC tank and barga cursed, but that's about it for memorable points. Only get on sale if you must, and do not expect too much.
The Good: Customization and variety of parts The Bad: Boring missions, Gameplay is janky and not in a good way, Grind is brutal, and no FOV slider so if playing it makes you dizzy/nauseous you're out of luck. Was hoping for something like EDF, where the jank is part of the charm, instead this was an endurance test. Can't imagine ever playing it again, even with a puke bucket nearby.
