«Crew 167: The Grand Block Odyssey» Review(En/RUS)
(Sci-fi Puzzle / Sokoban + Atmospheric Adventure) Gameplay: https://youtu.be/vhDrVlePCNs
«Review(En):»
This is the story of a star colonist who went in search of a new home. A long flight and a broken chip drive the colonist crazy, but he tries to fight visions in his head... The gameplay resembles the game Sokoban (you need to move the boxes). Difficulty increases as you progress. You can move some boxes limited number of times (the picture on the boxes shows how many times it can be moved). + Intriguing sci-fi story. + Atmosphere. + Exciting storyline videos. + Great music and sounds. + High-quality voice acting of all characters. + 75 challenging, well-designed puzzles. + Addictive gameplay. + Simple, convenient control. + There is Quick Restart Button to reset the current puzzle.
«Review(RUS):»
Crew 167: The Grand Block Odyssey is a story-driven sokoban adventure game where you play as a pioneer who was outfitted with a mood-stabilizing implant and sent out into space to find a new planet that humanity could eventually inhabit... because Earth is very much beyond rescue at this point. However, as he, the protagonist whom you play as, approaches the planet he was assigned to, Hope 9, his implant somehow malfunctioned. Oddly enough, the malfunction manifests as sokoban puzzles that you'll have to solve to progress the storyline. As you play, the game will introduce new challenging elements to really test your skills, mainly because the game doesn't explain anything and you've got to figure out how these new elements work on your own. Unfortunately for me, I found myself stuck pretty early on (24% into the story) on the level where blocks with countdown timers were first introduced. Thought I did everything right, but apparently not.
Watch me play!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKkNOICAEGo
Pros
+ Interesting and clever but not too difficult (at least until the level with the countdown timers) sokoban puzzles to solve + Intriguing storyline related to one's mental health. The story starts off offering you more questions than answers but as you progress, you'll get to interact with various terminals and read memos, and also enjoy short animated clips that usually contain a lot of backstory. + Rather good voice acting for an indie game + The graphics quality is pretty alright for an indie game as well. The game would probably look nicer on a smaller screen though, like on a mobile phone. + Due to the "sandbox" mode where you can create your own levels, the price of the game is pretty much worth it. Even if you don't fancy creating levels of your own, know that you could always drop by and check out other players' creations. Endless replayability (as long as players are creating new levels) = win! + You're not forced to complete all the puzzles in the game in order to advance the story. In fact, the game often lets you choose 2 out of 4 puzzles to solve. However, why not just solve them all? + Unlimited "redo"s and no penalties for using a redo (or as the game calls it - a "rewind")
Cons/Feedback
- I hope a bit of (optional) hint is given to explain the newly-introduced mechanics to players who just couldn't get it. I got stuck at 24% into the game, and unless I have an epiphany, my progress in this game would essentially be halted.
Overall
Most puzzle games are designed to be simple... lightweight. Crew 167, on the other hand, is a puzzle game that has a really nice sci-fi-themed, mental health-related story to give it some extra weight. The puzzles themselves are mostly fun to solve; though naturally, there will be tricky ones that will just trip you right up. The game has no hints though so if you're stuck; you're stuck.... until you throw up your hand and decide to cheat a little and go look up some walkthrough if you found one. P/S: I think I should also mention that although I have played sokobans before, it's not really my go-to puzzle game. I'm more of a nonogram/sudoku-type, tbh. However, I've had fun playing Crew 167, and when it comes to games, that's all that matters!
A great Sokoban Game
In Crew 167 : The Grand Block Odyssey you control an astronaut with an implemented AI Chipset , who suffers from schizophrenia, delusions (or is he?) and anxiety. Instead of kicking the bucket , he chooses to kick imaginary boxes here and there. The difficulty get medium-hard from game's beginning, it uses evolving mechanics and even though it can be speedrun'd in less than an hour, ya might spent more time than that while solving a single puzzle. The story/cinematic sequences, while nothing breathtaking, advances fast & serves it's purpose more than fine. Finally , the low tempo piano tunes surely delivers. If you're either looking for a good sokoban game , want to sharpen your mind or just kill time in a comfy way Crew 167 won't disappoint !
Game is great with a great puzzle system that keeps challenging you in different ways throughout the game! Music is really awesome, very fitting with the story that your character is going through. You get around 2-3 hours of gameplay depending on your solving skills. You also get to choose if you wan't to go forward with the story or want to do harder puzzles (and taking longer time to complete the game). Also, really really low price for a good puzzle game!
Remember in Pokémon the puzzles in seafoam caverns and ice cave with the boulders? Now imagine that made into a full scale game. But no cute dog fighting.
I really enjoyed my time with this game and can't wait for additional content to be added. I typically get frustrated and confused with puzzle games, but the puzzles in this game are extremely well done and the game does a great job and slowly introducing you to new puzzles. The music is fantastic and the story is interesting and keeps me wanting to know what happens next. If you like good puzzles and an interesting sci-fi story, then this is an easy recommendation!
Crew 167: The Grand Block Odyssey is one of the most unique puzzle games I have played. It combines a series of puzzles with a really meaningful story line that hooks in the player. The difficulty of the puzzles progressed throughout the game but while they could be challenging I always felt as they were achievable and that people regardless of their experience with puzzle games could complete them as well. One thing i think the game did really well was that when a new type of puzzle was introduced the player had the opportunity to see how they worked before the puzzles got too complex. The story line of Crew 167: The Grand Block Odyssey was very intriguing and it really motivated me to complete each puzzle so I could progress and find out more. The music fit the story line of game really well and would be something that I listen to outside of the game. Overall I think this is an amazing game and would definitely recommend it.
Great puzzle game that combines different mechanics in a clever way. I had to think really hard at some puzzles and it was great to figure them out. The story is intersting and not far from where we could be heading. Price is more than fair. Great value overall!
