8.5/10 - faithful and well done remaster of the 90s RTS classics C&C Tiberian Dawn and Red Alert (and corresponding expansion packs). 4K graphics and remastered soundtrack are A+. Everything is as I remembered from 30 years ago including the goofy B-movie cutscenes, hot Nadia, comical one-liners, and the AI getting lost. However, there is stuttering when blowing up bridges, a long startup if there are a lot of save files (due to my achievement hunting), and intermittent disconnects to game server when playing multiplayer. If you enjoy traditional RTS games or, like me, played this as a kid, it's a buy at discount. For newcomers, the 90s AI pathfinding will feel frustrating and when viewed under the lens of 30+ years of game improvement, it won't compare to modern RTS options. For achievement hunters, the biggest hurdle is completing all Tiberian Dawn missions on hard...and these are actually hard...harder than the original C&C setting (but there are helpful guides if you need). There is 1 MP achievement (play 10 MP games) and you'll need a partner for that.
Big time nostalgia, remebering playing this as a kid and it was magical! Buy it and try it if you have memories of C&C or RA from the past, but dont try it thinking it will be ANYTHING like a modern RTS. Game mechanics and unit controll and AI is absolutely horrible for today, but that is the charm you remeber from the 90s. Rose tinted glasses from me big time. Played both campains, there was fun, some missions are mindbogglingy frustrating with the AI. Enemy AI is confusing as either they will rush with crushing forces early, or stand around and do nothing letting you build a huge base and undefeatable army. And with no "move and attack command" which i think this remaster really needed, single target clicking all enemys one by one is just.... And your units are absolutetly braindead. Sometimes they attack when attacked, sometimes they stand and not shoot back and die. When clicking to attack sometimes they will stop and do nothing, sometimes they will keep going if they were moving and move out of attack range (or right into enemy towers). If your building or unit gets attacked and there are friendly units around, they will just stare and do nothing. In the old game this was just part of the difficulty of micromanaging your units one by one, but in this remaster i really wish they upgraded it for QOL. Get it for the memories on sale for a blast from the past, but I would not recomend this for anyone who doesent want nostalgia or researching old RTS games.
I never played Command and Conquer until the remaster but after I played it I had to own all the games.
It's undoubtably the start of an incredible legacy and great remaster, but oh my god is the original C&C campaign bad. Poorly programmed commando missions where your only unit takes damage from using its own attack, badly balanced missions where there's no real counters to what the enemy uses, it takes forever to get any money from halfway across the map, and one tank will run over all fifteen of your grenadiers, so the last ten minutes of waiting are wiped out in 2 seconds. That, or they'll blow themselves up because it's funny to be frustrated by games. It strikes me as old-school arcade design in that it's meant to be hard for the sake of making you restart, rather than being hard because of the mechanics Mods for some reason broke the game for me, making me unable to place any buildings. They just refused to deploy. It was only a zoom mod as well. I'm certain there's some fun to be had with Red Alert and some of the other stuff, but man does this horrendous GDI campaign sour the whole experience. And looking online, it seems that that has been the concensus for 25 years. A real shame that they didn't fix the glaring balancing and AI issues from the original game. Go play RA2 or Generals instead
Honestly superb work on remastering the originals, the new graphics look really good and the music is still awesome. Personally though, i still think OpenRA plays better lol
My all time favorite RTS game from back in the PS1 days and I finally experienced it on PC for the 1st time. 10/10 game so happy with all the bells and whistles and the extra content. I want Red Alert 2 and Tib Sun next. I hope!! Highly recommend this if you enjoy Command & Conquer
Vey fun
The year was 1996. I was 17 and just bought my first pentium 1 PC. I am now 47 and bought a Steam Machine just for this game. One of the greatest of all time.
Very hard to recommend. If you're young, stay away, do not touch this game. It'll frustrate you beyond imagination. I'm old myself but don't really have fun. I'd say, later C&C games are much better than this.
Classic Red Alert game! Plays and looks great. I remember paying this when I was young.
