Very little chance of having casual fun with this. I purchased this for a little bit of nostalgia and wanted to have a RTS fun building bases, playing with tech trees, finding out about units (again), building the armies I fancied. So I did what I often do with RTS and stared the campaign on easy. It's a non stop grind fest against a relentless AI. This is NOTHING like the original game (which was, perhaps, too easy). All I've done in the early stages is try to stay alive. They come at you constantly from the early game without you even starting to agro them. They have near perfect resource management and rebuild their base immediately whilst you struggle to keep your last watchtower up. If I wanted a game where I needed god level micro management, I'd hop on Starcraft II multiplayer and select the Korean servers. What doesn't help is that, whilst they've 'updated' the AI, your own units remain dumb as a tree stump. Just like the original, they wonder off to die, they can't path, they wiggle about instead of attacking properly. Yes, I could probably work out 'a tactic' to improve my resource management and then a unit type that let me cheese the game to win scenarios. But I'm more into the 'builder' side of RTS and there's really no fun in that for me. So what you have is a reissue of a classic title with 'reworked' enemy AI but none of the old jank removed. I'd rather just play the original. No woo loooo looo for me.
I loved this game when I was a kid and was looking forward to getting back on it. But, and I don't know if this is because my standards have been brought up by modern gaming, I found it so clunky and frustrating. You want me to walk the two steps to the transportation boat I can see? I'll give you walking in the opposite direction in land instead and ignoring the boat. You want me to not wander off to my death chasing after a villager? Sorry, I'm on the other side of the map already. I know these were the quirks of the original game, but 30 years later I've lost all patience with it. Maybe I'm just old but I can't subject myself to this torture.
Joya super recomendada.
Ah. The good ol' age of empires. Play this just so you know a bit of RTS history. THe DE is lovely.
Problem with this remaster is that it stays extremely faithful to the original. While the graphics has been modernized, the underlying gameplay remains mostly untouched. Unfortunately, the original game aged badly, so a straightforward remaster was doomed. The flaws it had in 1997 were frustrating, but still tolerable. In 2019, however, these same issues feel downright bizarre. Strange game design choices, abysmal pathfinding, dull campaign - all makes this game very hard, if not impossible, to recommend. Needless to say, there is no reason to play multiplayer either. Nostalgia is the only selling point, but even that only goes so far. You can play the original game in DOSBox, or you can play Age of Empires II if you want to enjoy a "timeless classic rts".
I don't like Bill Gates nor his company Microsoft, but this game... Is an absolute masterpiece <3
Reason for Thumbs Down:
Abandoned by devs, Lack of some QoL features.
Gameplay
AOE:DE is an RTS game set in ancient times. In this game, you choose a civilization, gather resources, build, train soldiers, and finally destroy enemy civilizations. There are also 10 different campaigns that tell the stories and historical events of various civilizations from the past.
Graphics
It is the updated version of the old AOE with better graphics, and it looks very sweet and clean. Also, unlike the old game, they added a zoom-in and zoom-out feature.
Audio
The sound and music of the game have been updated and they are nice. However, the voice lines when you click on units feel too simple.
Story
The game has 10 different campaigns where you play historical and legendary events of different civilizations. Of course, it is not completely true, but you can read the history section in the game to find real information about those events.
Difficulty
There are 5 different AI difficulty options in the game. On higher difficulties, the AI cheats. Moreover, while some campaign levels are easy, others can be very hard.
