After reaching out to Ubisoft's customer support, I understand now why the company is in such dire financial straits.
Ehh, it's 4$ so i finally picked it up. Well, it requires me to make a Ubisoft account before I can even load it up! Asks for your date of birth, runs you through a bunch of pages asking if they can spam your email, bunch of random rules to make the username and password, and you better remember it because it asks for the user and password again after you start up the game! None of my other games ask me to make an account, if i see that I immediately refund and leave a review to warn others.
got the game for around $3. The game itself is good, just don't expect Black Flag-like gameplay. Lower your expectations and just treat it as a simple pirate game, then you'll enjoy it.
Basically, Elite Dangerous in the sea. If you want a more detailed description: I waited until finish the main quests to review. Bought the game after seeing a video and wishing to try the combat, and the game is much better than I thought, with me playing it every night. The way NPCs interact with you makes the world alive and the campaign is not bad, sometimes very entertaining, sometimes it suffers the problem of modern gaming, specially the Ubisoft problem, and because of that I think the company deserves all the criticism it is suffering. The world is full of stories and secrets, the inhabitants reacts to your presence, wisper and chat with each other and even the chants of your crew tell you some, proving that they can create something fun. But overall the main quests are good. There is plenty of ships to choose and fabricate, one different from the other concerning roles and strategy. If you like creating builds, here you have several options of cannons and accessories to it and as you climb the worlds, it becomes important. Like in Diablo 3: you can climb with a random build and good equips, but it is better that you create something with a synergy. The combat is awesome, to the point of pure chaos sometimes, where you need to control everything, exactly like Diablo, again. Smoke, explosion, water, scream, a great experience. You don't just stop and shoot, you need to aim, control your sails, pay attention to your direction, cooldowns, brace (a type of shield bar) in the right time to do not waste stamina, watch the waters, sometimes in a fog, heavy storm... This last aspect itself is great. The winds and waves truly offer a challenge and if you do not navigate them correctly, you damage your ship. Not only that, the physics are really well made, you can feel sailing your ship. Concerning the activities, you have a lot, like I said, ED on waters. I never fast travel and I don't rush the game either. I like to walk in the outposts, there's plenty of details to see and to do, people to talk and so. After finishing the main quests, I started to see everything else. I jump on my ship and check the map: the game have a bunch of world activities you can check and join by the map or the quest list: faction war activities to help your faction if you choose one, world bosses, investigations, mini events, you can claim factories and manage them, produce goods in your lab and run trade routes, treasure hunt that gets "harder" to decipher as the quality of the map you get, you can plunder outposts, steal merchants, all while improving your ship, your cannons and accessories, building more ships, etc. I play with PvP ON, which is optional, and faced other players three times and it was great. First my ship were rank 18 against a 22 and I were massacred in the open world. One rank is a good difference already, concerning weapon and ship upgrades. The other I were 19 and destroyed a 17 in a PvP event. And the last I were 21 against a 21 and it was fantastic, I won because my strategy worked. So I liked the game a lot. Its fun and even tho I don't care about graphics, it's beautiful even in my old rig. I like to play inside the ship and you can see your crew working, which is nice. The details are everywhere too, with birds and dolphins chasing your ship, rats and flies in outposts, crabs, even the sound change as you alternate the view of your ship. The engine performance is great and game breaking bugs I encountered only 1 that required me to re-login to finish a mission, a minor one in the UI and an invincible world boss with no explanation why it is/was there.
First of all, I don't care what people say about Ubisoft, those dudes made some of the most legendary games in the world and shaped the industry as we know it. Skull and Bones is fully made in their style: it's colorful, a bit chaotic, slightly annoying at times, but it's overall quite fun (especially with friends), uplifting, and made me fall in love with that sound of sea wind blowing through the sails. Ubisoft knows how to make these arcade-y games that allow seamless player experience, don't require too much thinking all of the time, and still allow players to get immersed in the game world. Their worldbuilding usually makes me feel like at home at most in-game locations, and I simply love that feeling of familiarity and warmth every time I come back to the game. I live by the sea and consider myself a waterman, so Skull and Bones speaks to me on a deeper level, which means devs did a good job. It's NOT a pirate-sailing-maritime warfare simulator - it's a mechanically simple yet a rich game that offers lots of exploration, energetic battles, and an awesome feeling of being on water. Highly recommended, especially on sale.
Game isn't really exciting. This review won't be helpful, just wanted to say it is a bad game.
Got it for 3€ in a sale and that was money well spent. It´s not Black Flag, It´s very grindy and you´d better have a friend or two to play with but at its core, this game is fun. While it may have been a disaster at launch, I personally find it quite enjoyable at this point in time.
Not as terrible as it was day of launch. I remember playing the beta and not having a good time. Picked this up on a sale to see what the updates have done for it and well, I can say that the updates have improved a lot of the lackluster things. There are still certain aspects that need touching up. This game is for those who are hungry for Pirate content at the core. This is sadly another state of Ubisoft needing to cook things in the oven longer and add in what fans desire later on. I'm excited for the land combat update and seeing how that carries the rest. For me personally, I would say Windrose is the better offering for a pirate sim. Or just get Black Flag Resynced if you do not wish to test this one out. If you DO want to add this to your library just to have more pirate games then I implore you to wait for a SALE.
astonishingly mediocre game for them to be claiming "worlds first AAAA game" worth the $3 i paid for it, not much more. Nothing to do besides decent ship battles that run out of luster very quickly the on foot stuff is 100% an afterthought tacked on. Feels clunky and massively underdeveloped, even after being out for 2 years now. Abandonware
