About
Blackout Memphis is a dark action game driven by high speed, challenging difficulty, and a demanding electronic soundtrack in a world full of violence. The story takes place in an alternative version of Memphis in the early 2000s.
You take on the role of an ordinary family man, worn down by the demands of his exhausting job, the challenges of a long-term marriage with a luxury-loving wife, and raising an extroverted teenage daughter. The constant news coverage of escalating violence in Memphis, citywide blackouts, and everyday struggles increasingly weigh on him. Tormented by sleeplessness on one hand and by brutal nightmares during his rare, brief moments of rest on the other, he experiences frequent memory lapses that make everyday life nearly impossible. This ultimately leads him to seek psychological treatment.
As the medication begins to take effect over time and family life starts to settle down, the city plunges into a blood-red wave of violence. Every day brings new murders and bloody gang crimes. The number of victims is unending. Nightly blackouts become more frequent, unsettling the public. No one feels safe anymore. Why aren’t the authorities doing anything? But something seems off—not just in Memphis. Is everything truly as it seems?
Every shot is lethal. Every punch kills you. Every defeat sends you back to the beginning, while the soundtrack drives you to take on the challenge once more.
Fast-paced gunplay in abandoned construction ruins, neon-colored bars, underground casinos, and many other locations of the dark Memphis underworld
Fast electronic synthwave music and techno beats drive the gameplay
Deadly combat against a variety of gangsters from the Memphis underworld
A dark plot full of violence and an almost crushing hopelessness
The backstory unfolds through a variety of dialogues with the main character’s family, their psychologist, and a host of shady individuals encounters that take place in fast-food restaurants, video rental stores, mall shops, or through messages on the answering machine between the action-packed game levels
As the game progresses, different animal masks can be unlocked to disguise the main character's identity. Per level, an already unlocked mask can be selected from a gallery to give the player a special trait or change the look of the game
A wide arsenal of deadly melee and ranged weapons is available to the player per level. Everything from a baseball bat to an assault rifle can be used against the gangsters
Weapons can be thrown to stun the opponent. The fate of the opponent lying on the ground and stunned can be defeated with a finishing move
A point system shows the player's skill per level in a school score
In the fast-paced battles, attacking and killing opponents in quick succession as combos can increase the high score

Top-down shooter that may be too identical to its source, but that is okay because it has amazing gameplay and soundtrack. If you have followed the indie scene in recent years, you will realize what inspired the game. But there is nothing wrong with that if everything works as it should. And the game delivers on what matters. The gameplay consists of moving your character from a top-down perspective and killing enemies. This is accomplished through the use of a variety of standard weapons such as pistol, shotgun, and rifle. The controls are simple because all you need to know is that you can pick up and throw weapons, as you can only carry one and cannot reload. You can also punch or run around with a knife, but you will not last long against armed foes, who can kill you with a single bullet. You cannot view the full stage, but you can move the camera around your character to scout the area. This allows you to plan your moves since if you start firing too close to an enemy, the majority of them will run to your position. One important move is stun when an enemy stands behind a door and you crash through. This will knock him out for a few seconds and allow you to stab him. Despite the precise and dangerous enemy, everything is fair and plays well. Bullets land where they should, and there are no unusual errors or anomalies that would prohibit you from completing a stage. Enemies may react differently to bullets, but this simply makes them more easily tricked. Unfortunately, there’s one issue with the stun move. Some stunned enemies cannot be killed with a knife or a pistol. In this instance, you must wait until they stand back up before killing them. They do not stay stunned for long, but it is easy to forget there is a enemy on the floor when you are clearing an entire room. This may lead to surprises when they abruptly stand up and run after you from behind. Stages take place in a variety of beautifully designed locations. They are all packed with incredibly intricate assets that bring the stages to life. A special mention goes to the soundtrack, which is as fantastic as the graphics. Stages may feature multiple floors and parts, but you do not have to complete them all at once because the game saves on each new screen. The goal is to just kill all enemies. The final grade is unimportant unless you are a perfectionist who wants all achievements. Levels can be replayed. But this eye-candy is a double-edged sword. The main problem is that weapons are very hard to spot because they don’t come with any visual clue that would make them stand out. If you throw a weapon into some dark part of the room, you probably won’t be able to see it anymore. The game also has masks that unlock as you progress through the game. The bear mask, for example, makes door stuns lethal but prevents you from picking up weapons. One of my favorites is the goat mask, which increases your visibility and allows you to shoot enemies before they can fire back.
I think any fan of Hotline Miami might like it. At least most of them ;)
I did not expect that: A game similar to Hotline Miami, and it’s actually fun. Even a lot of fun. It doesn’t quite reach 100 percent of the original’s atmosphere, though I’m not sure if the developers were even aiming for that. It’s not exactly a clone either – it’s an exciting top-down shooter with masks set in a dark gangster world. It goes its own way, even if the most important elements have been carried over. The levels, the music, and the overall atmosphere are fantastic. The gameplay works great. I can truly recommend this game! The difficulty level is challenging! One wish I have: Gamepad support! Why is that missing? But I read in the community hub that it’s apparently on its way. I guess we’ll have to wait for that. I hope the developers stick with it. The game has serious potential. If it’s true that this game was made by just two guys, then massive respect for their achievement. The game is so much fun!
Wow! Normally I have trouble controlling the character in these types of games but this just felt natural. It's a fast, violent thinking person's game where having a plan is as important as your weapons. It's really, really good. Every failure is a clue on what to do and managing to take out a bunch of guys in a fast run with just your fists is really satisfying. If this is your type of game then I highly recommend it.
Weiter so!

First impression: Blackout Memphis delivers what it promises. The fast-paced top-down battles are a lot of fun, especially when the driving electro sound gets the adrenaline pumping even more. If you like gritty action and tough challenges, you shouldn't miss out on this shooter!
Blackout Memphis is an exciting top-down shooter with an interesting story. The game is great fun and strongly reminiscent of Hotline Miami. Fast action with very good electronic music! I love it!
Nice game - easy to learn gameplay, but not to easy to master. Great combo of retro and modern look creates a very nice atmosphere. And it runs on Linux - excellent :-)
