"ℙ𝕝𝕖𝕒𝕤𝕖 𝕙𝕖𝕝𝕡 𝕦𝕤, 𝕟𝕠𝕓𝕝𝕖 𝕤𝕙𝕚𝕣𝕥𝕝𝕖𝕤𝕤 𝕨𝕒𝕣𝕣𝕚𝕠𝕣!"
Beholgar is a retro action platformer that channels the spirit of old classics such as Ghosts n' Goblins and Castlevania. As you land into the forest village, you're immediatly struck with a wave of nostalgia and you're just thinking: "If this town person says 'It's a terrible night to have a curse' I'm going to lose it". Hopefully nobody does, and you're allowed to continue your journey without much more nostalgia-hits. Gameplay is straightforward but demanding. Movement is intentionally stiff, mimicking older platformers, which adds to the challenge but can feel frustrating if you’re used to modern fluid controls. Combat revolves around timing and positioning rather than flashy combos, and enemies are placed in ways that often force you to learn through trial and error. For some players, that’s part of the appeal; for others, it may come across as outdated design rather than intentional difficulty. Moreover, and as with every Metroidvania game ever... A lot of backtracking is in order. The more abilities you get, the more of the world you can see, some of it hidden in places you've already visited. The game has got limited accessibility, so you'd only enjoy it if you've already played similar titles in difficulty and gameplay. Punishing enemy placements and rigid controls can make progress feel frustrating but mastering Beholgar's techniques and familiriazing yourself with the map layouts will prove quite rewarding. Overall, Beholgar is a solid pick if you’re specifically looking for a challenging, retro-style platformer with a dark aesthetic. But if you prefer smoother controls, more forgiving design, or innovation, it might feel a bit too stuck in the past. 8.5/10
This is probably one of the worst games I've completed. There's a lot to like but unfortunately there's also a lot to dislike. First major problem, the bugs. This is the bugiest 2d game I've ever played. Every time I start the game I have to go to options for it to remember what those were set at. Crazy. Getting stuck in scenery. Menus glitched out on top of menus. Collectables falling through the floor. Hitboxes are insane. Bosses are lame but frustrating. Controls are bad. The double jump is terrible. Grammer and spelling issues. No map. Weapons feel terrible to use. Secondary weapons that appear randomly and are contextually useful at best. I enjoyed some of my time with it but I could never recommend it.
This is a great little metroidvania game in a retro style. I had a lot of fun playing through it and mastering all the weapons and abilities. The music is really good, I especially liked it in the Witches Cemetary level. It took me about 8 hours to 100% it, so it's not long. It's a little challenging at parts but nothing too hard. I got it on sale for under 5 bucks and it's well worth it for that price.
It's okay. There's some QoL issues with no map, and the powerups are really cliche. Double-Jump, sure. Rolls now go through enemies? That's not the default? Some powerup. Honestly, even if it seems hard at first, you then realize that everything is saved the moment you grab it. So you can just do death runs to grab keys or items - when you respawn you still have them. Its a short game with not much going on. Bosses are fairly easy except maybe the snake, and that's just because you fight that one on narrow platforms. Even the final boss was a tedious pushover. I'll give it a thumbs down because its a bit too boring and that final boss was terrible.
A fun 2d adventure game that captures that classic 8-bit vibe. There is some incorrect spelling & I did encounter a bug where I got stuck in the scenery when I fell onto a floating platform from the screen above & had to reset. The game is worth a play.
