i bought this dinky ass game instead of silksong
This is probably the first time I have given such a lengthy review, but here it goes... I've read most of the reviews, including the negative ones, and I was a bit hesitant and intimidated to get the game at full price because of "how hard it was" or all the other "faults" people claimed it had. I've played other games by Migami, such as both Lecarde Chronicles and Wallachia. All 3 hard as balls(Though I really enjoyed Lecarde Chronicles 2 lol), so I figured I would be in for another frustrating journey with this one. And... I was so happy to be wrong! This game was AMAZING. I mean, it's not exactly Game of the Year, but it definitely cured the long time itch I've had for wanting to play more Castlevania-like games. Controls: Archaic, sure, but if you've played any of the Metroidvania Castlevania games, you'll adapt quickly. It really did feel a bit like Symphony of the Night with the challenge and cryptic nature of Simon's Quest(SQ wishes it was this game lol) People complain it's too slow, but honestly, it's one of the faster games compared to the previous ones, especially when you use the slide, similar to how everyone used backdashing more often in Symphony of the Night. Challenge: Is it hard? For new players, sure. For veterans, not really. Compared to Lecarde Chronicles 2, this game is a cakewalk! You'll have frustrating points like the optional area where you have to navigate through one-hit kill traps. But every death felt like my fault. It takes skill to get past bosses, which is just fine. Plus you have many ways to help you get better: buying new weapons, being able to carry more potions than in Lecarde Chronicles 2, and grinding for XP. Speaking of, a lot of complaints I saw were about grinding and well, this has RPG elements, what did you expect...? Honestly these people have this game confused with Lecarde Chronicles 2. THAT is a grind heavy game... I'd say the only grind that gets a bit ridiculous is the one for the Secret Boss, which you probably can beat without grinding at all, but maxing out your stats makes the battle much easier.(At least maxing out the Orbs, because Health does not matter during this fight and I think this one time Migami shot themselves in the foot.) The puzzles weren't that hard, but then again I am a vet. They're pretty good with giving you hints. It also helps to READ EVERYTHING and write things down(Like we had to in the past lol) There were a few times I had to look up the solution and then I facepalmed because of how obvious it was. Then there were solutions I would have never of guessed in a million years... Again, hoping they remedy that in their next game. Graphics: Again, may be primitive for some, and though I personally don't exactly like how big and "blown up" everything is compared to other Metroidvania games, it didn't ruin the adventure for me. Everything looks great and pops a lot more than the previous Migami games. I think my only complaint is that some platforms don't pop enough and blend in too well with the background. This has been a trap since the first Lecarde Chronicles and I hope Migami fixes that in their future games. Music: One of my favorite parts of the game, so much so I downloaded the soundtrack! While a majority of soundtracks were a bit forgettable, there were a lot of upbeat ones I really enjoyed. I just wish there were more upbeat ones, as I've always been a fan of the more upbeat music from Castlevania. It's no Michiru Yamane, but it gets the job done! Conclusion: This game was a blast! My only gripe is it felt too short compared to the other games. The challenge is there, but far from impossible. Would I recommend this game? YES. It might be easier for vets, but new players shouldn't shy away from this one. Please do NOT listen to the negative reviews. This game is isn't perfect(what game is?), but it is FAR from the worst thing ever. I 100%'d this game, so I think that says enough lol! Full price or waiting for a Sale, you should definitely add this to your Library, especially if you're a die-hard Castlevania nut like me! Don't feel intimidated like I was. It's challenging, but you will get through it, I believe in you! I give this game an 8.5/10 Definitely worthy for a vampire to sink their teeth into and drain it dry~
This game is... OK. It would be an excellent Castlevania game if the controls weren't so sticky. Most of my frustration with this game is that I can't count on the game to do what I expect it to when I'm pushing buttons.
The audio design is very strong, with a ton of high quality voice acting. But there's a lot about this game that is kind of jank. And not just the numerous English typos (Is it wrong that they kind of make me happy by suggesting the game was not AI translated?). The art style is a weird higher res 2D with gritty inconsistent level of detail, though I eventually got used to it. The game engine is odd: pulling up the map or menu seems as abrasive as Alt+Tab, complete with an awkward flash to black and the mouse cursor becoming visible briefly. And last but not least, the beginning areas feel very simple and unambitious, opening with fetch-quest tier stuff with sometimes ambiguous goals and destinations. Despite being unsure of the quality for a few hours, eventually the worldbuilding and gameplay won me over. The game is actually kind of badass when you look past its flaws. Strongly recommend!! The world needs more games like this.
A história é ruim.
Game does have good qualities but gets incredibly frustrating to play at times. Controlling Mateo feels like driving tank through a swamp and his vertical mobility is almost nonexistent. Most of the bosses are cakewalks, all those that aren't are mostly so because Mateo cannot get his apparent 200 kilo ass of the ground fast enough. You also get flashbanged every time you open either your map or inventory. Every time.
Buy it, thank me later! If you enjoyed the Acts on Act Raiser for SNES or Rastan for the Arcade, Odallus, Castlevania Simons Quest, and Castlevania SOTN, Then this game is like if they all got together in a wild party and had a baby! - Oh yeah Sound track and voices are on point! - I'm just sad that I'm nearing the end of the game already :( - Super fun game!
We have Castlevania at home? For real though, the game's an excellent love letter to IGA's relic-hunt Castlevanias. Top-notch soundtrack, incredibly detailed sprites and backgrounds, and it's challenging to a refreshing degree - the game gives you a variety of offensive and defensive options, and expects you to make use of all of them. Highly recommended if you want something similar to Symphony of the Night and the subsequent IGAvanias.
I like this weird little game. It's like a bargain-bin Castlevania that falls just short of greatness, but has enough charm that you want to see what happens next. Sure, it sometimes disrespects my time by insta-killing me in hilarious ways and deleting 20 minutes of my gameplay, but it also makes me feel cool when I cheese its bosses to death or stumble upon its secrets. I just can't seem to stay mad at this delightful little scamp!
