Nightdive do a good job with these remasters, there's no denying. This game is a real stinker. I do appreciate that it's available in a good condition for people who liked it back in the day, but for me who hadn't played it before... It's just awful. I got about 4 levels in, then I got knocked really far back and fell down into a hole that blasted me with fart noises. I think ending my time with this game inside the fart pit is completely understandable.
I love Nightdive but this crap should have remained in the dust-bin of 3DO..
God awful movement makes this practically unplayable. Not even worth a glance.
Fantastic remaster of a REALLY TERRIBLE game that is also really funny. The level design is comically bad at many points but it was really fun to laugh at. It's rare to see a game with such varied competence. Parts of this game are very fun and inspired, and other parts are messed up and atrocious. Enduring the bad grants you access to some of the craziest movement in the boomer shooter genre via the very fun jetpack, and some very fun weapons and some genuinely good enemy designs. A good microcosm of PO'ed is the backflip button. By pressing the backflip button, your entire screen will rotate, and Ox (that's the name of the chef protagonist) will make a mighty leap. He makes a funny "Wahoaw!" sound when he does this. I think it is intended to dodge opponent attacks and move behind them for badass kills at no health expense. In practice all it actually does is disorient the player, maybe dodge a projectile from the fast movement, and make a funny sound. You will probably never use it seriously. Don't expect anything great. Revel in this half-baked pie.
Polished ♥♥♥♥ is still ♥♥♥♥
This game is a trainwreck, I've attempted to play both the 3DO and PS1 versions and they made me sick after about 10 minutes. Nightdive have done their best here, but it's still PO'ed, ugly, frustrating and just unfinished feeling. It's like the Bubsy 3D of FPSes.
I never heared of this game before this remaster came out. And now I know why. This game is a weird mediocre old school fps and a weird choice for a remaster. First lets quickly talk about the technical aspects or stuff concerning the remaster only. The remaster is mostly pretty good, but I do have some complaints: -most importantly: the game is lacking quick saves/loads (but it has manual saving/loading), every old school fps should have quick saves -I did have a few crashs, especially on one level my game always crashed when I saved (Level Tiryns) -In another level I had a game breaking bug where my character was stuck under the ceiling, with no way getting down, this even happend on other saves, but restarting the game fixed it -I do think it's very stupid that the remaster has an achievement for beating the game on very hard difficulty. Not only is this very challenging, but also unfair, not fun and annoying as enemies respawn on (only) that difficulty. There is a reason why no one plays Doom on Nightmare difficulty. Now lets talk about the actual gameplay: -Level desgin is often laughably bad, like just a collection of random objects put on a map. Most of them are still decently playable, but some also are from a gameplay perspective horrible. However not every map is bad. -sometimes it's not obvious at all how to proceed in a level, to a point where I had to look on a walkthrough a few times. No, this game is not like Doom or Quake which are the references for the game as the store page says. -You can often ignore most enemies in a level if you just run to the exit (especially with the help of the jetpack). There are parts of a level which are just completly pointless from a gameplay perspective. -movement is very sluggish -enemies always shoot where you will be with your current movement, not where you stand at the moment which means constantly strafing in one direction will get you hit a lot and dodging is very hard. Also most enemies are ranged. -all flying enemies are super annoying, as they move fast, always shoot at you and have more health than you might think, but also some other enemies are very annoying, just to name the slime enemies here. -The game is lacking music entirely -The game has 2 melee weapons, one I found after my first ranged weapon which means I never used it at all and one weak ranged weapon with infinite ammo. All those 3 you never use again once you get a bit of ammo for the pistol. Then there is one gun (flamethrower) that is strong but has low range and uses the same ammo than your jetpack, so it's also rarely used. Another weapon usually hurts you more than the enemies you are shooting at. Another weapon is very strong, but ammo is very rare. Which means most of the time you only use the pistol, the "uzi", or the rocket launcher. The weapons can overall feel a bit underpowered. -there are no real secrets in the game (but some secret levels) Now what about the good stuff: -I really like the jetpack and the verticality in the levels -gunplay is all right once you get most of the weapons in later levels. Especially in the lategame using the rocket camera against the mechs is really fun when you steer the rocket over half the map. Overall the game sucks really hard at the beginning, but it does get better over time (bad levels still appear here and there) but never reaches a point where I would consider the game to be fantastic (maybe not even good), just mediocre.
janky but really fun. 8/10
This remaster is like if you put a blind fish in space to breathe oxygen while asking him what color the sun is. A turd that should have never been polished despite Nightdive's reputation on making remasters of good games
