Reviews
Lucky me gets to write the first review for Urizen Frosty Plus The New Warriors. This expressive word salad of a title is certainly interesting, but unfortunately more effort was put into the title than the actual game. This is a 2D retro pixel platform brawler where you take your choice of retro pixel "warrior" and bash up various undeads and ghosts and things through traditional 2D retro platformer hack and slash kind of stuff. This game was launched almost 3 months ago and has zero reviews. So kudos to the developer for not using fake/compromised accounts to write fake positive reviews. I see that a lot, it's bad. In a similar vein, while this was slapped together with the godawful abomination and insult to all that is good and right in gaming, GameMaker Studio, it's not a template flip, that I can see. The vast majority of GMS games on Steam are simply copy+pastes of tutorials, demos and templates. It really seems they made a genuine attempt at a video game here (with 54 different sprites to choose from and 69 levels, apparently), they just didn't really know how to or have the budget to hire proper developers. A+ for effort, though. And because this doesn't seem like just a rubber stamp, it deserves a proper review. The controls are locked and they're garbage, like I don't think the developers ever saw a keyboard before, let alone a mouse. You have a mouse pointer in the main menu screen, but it doesn't work. This will probably be unplayable for many because of that reason alone. Resolution is also locked and can't be changed, so this falls far below minimum standards for PC. They chose to use obsolete retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is also due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. I think it's great if they've genuinely tried to make a game here, but unfortunately the quality is too low. I don't know if this is just another lazy cash grab, I'm on the fence about it. The whopping $6 USD price tag for a badly made GameMaker Studio platformer/brawler, and the way keys were sold in bulk to bundleware shovellers, DailyIndieGame, doesn't help. Regardless, the quality of the game here speaks for itself, and what it says is "Stay away, I am a terrible lazy retro pixel shovelware product."
Developer Response!
The developer has weighed in to inform everyone they didn't read the Developer Usage Rules for Steam "partners", or they deliberately ignored the part where Valve says "Though it may be tempting, not every review needs to be responded to." The developer admits that this is their first attempt at making a game, and by "making a game" they really mean "filling out templates in GameMaker Studio". Using game construction kits doesn't need any talent or professional game development effort, and results in terrible shovelware. There's very little in Urizen Frosty Plus The New Warriors to differentiate this from any other copy+paste from a GameMaker Studio template, the value to gamers is the same (next to none). The developer doubles down on the lazy pixel graphics by insisting it's "art". That's a commonly repeated shallow excuse used to cover the much more basic fact that the developer lacked the budget or talent to produce better visuals. If a developer is capable of producing visuals as good as Half-Life Alyx, Star Citizen, Mass Effect or Horizon Zero Dawn, then that's what they do. I don't support developers trying to cover up their inadequacies with weak excuses like "It was an artistic decision". It's not a decision when the developer has no choice but to produce a game with bad graphics because they can't do any better. And I can't recommend the resulting products, because the graphics are bad. The developer objects to my observation that pixel "art" is lazy, but the fact of the matter is that it is. Professional development houses work full time for years, with hundreds of staff, to produce the incredible visuals that we see in cutting edge games. That all relies on the amazing hardware produced by companies like AMD, Intel and NVidia, which is a billion dollar industry. It's literally decades, if not centuries worth of person-hours that go into constructing video game masterpieces. So when a developer spends a couple of hours slapping together/copying + pasting some retro pixel assets because that's all they're capable of, well, compared to professional developers, that's lazy. Better visuals = more work, deliberately making bad visuals = lazy. Maybe a lot of hard work went into this, and if that's the case, it's a shame, because you can't polish the proverbial, as they say. Rememer, hard work does not automatically, magically translate into quality or value. Someone utterly incompetent working for years and years might still end up with a crap game like Urizen Frosty Plus The New Warriors. It's built on a shoddy framework (I continue to maintain that GameMaker Studio is garbage) and you can't build anything decent without a decent foundation. The resultant product is still deficient as I've outlined in my original review. My review stands, I cannot recommend this to gamers.

HISTORIA
