[Potential spoilers ahead][potentially dork threatening language ahead][not potential but real human made review ahead] - I see a lot of people giving this game hate for bad scripting and characters and praising the combat system which really just goes to show you that some people who review games are objectively bad at video games and don't finish games before they rage-quit-review. The review: Characters: I think the story telling in this game is adequate, the main characters are tolerable maybe even likeable sometimes. NPCs are rational, reasonable, real. But admittedly all are kind of shallow and naive sometimes and I did not appreciate being called "little bubble" so much by a mutant penguin I hardly knew. Combat: I do think the combat is kind of a weak point, There's nothing wrong with it but with an ARPG title it's pretty uninspiring is all. It's made the game too easy, if you can just work out the jank hit boxes and nature switch mechanic, which although has it's quirks the rune-purchasing for character to level up is a nice idea but it's pretty one-dimensional as all it does is meager stat boosts and add a few moves and features to your moves that really don't do all that much to impact combat. Just boost damage and roll cooldown and you can pretty much beat anything with good enough reaction times. Choices Matter: Does it matter? maybe, Avril seemed pretty depressed and regardless but it does have narrative impact I think which is nice, but it definitely feels like it's just a mechanic to make you play NG+, which I don't mind per say but again just didn't feel... necessary? or the right game for it maybe... HOWEVER it did help [player] shape Avril and immerse into the role a little more which worked in it's favour well. The Puzzles: If you like puzzle games, this is not the game for you. There is some that make you think a little but all in all they are rudimentary, uninspiring, boring and annoying. I have nothing good to say about them, Well the pinball one wasn't unfun but that lasted 10 seconds. BUGS/Game issues: The most frustrating thing is the bugs. Of which there are very few but very stark ones e.g. I couldn't complete the gem riddle to open the way to Mila because first time the gems didn't activate and after a restart they kept resetting after I hit the 4th (emerald) So I was forced to open it the other way. Another is enemy trapping, because the enemies are real objects they can movement lock you, you can't even roll, there is moves that allow you to push them but they are available usually once, maybe twice, per combat. TLDR: On the whole I think it could have been a great game but with the bugs and the combat it's lacking a je ne sais quoi... maybe just depth and polish. Worth money, I'd say sub tenner though. Will scratch the rpg itch but it won't cure the sickness. 6/10
Rating this game is difficult because it does not really match a rating category. Would i recommend this? Probably not. Does it deserve the bad rating? Also no. It looks fine, competently made, puzzles work, combat is a bit on the repetitive side.
Yeah, well-made game... if only it were fun.
It's not amazing, but it's pretty good. The combat feels a bit button-mashy other than changing color at the right times - maybe there was some sort of signal for when you can attack safely, and when to dodge, but I didn't ever see anything like that, and basically just alternating attack and dodge the whole time works well enough to finish the game (with occasional use of powers). The puzzles were more fun than the combat, it's a shame there was like four times more combat than puzzles. Especially with the rolling ball puzzles being in there, there could easily have been a rolling ball *skill* section too. The story was fine, but not interesting enough that I feel any desire to play again making any of the other choices. I got ending C of four you say? Great. I can pretty much infer what the other three endings were. Got a bit of a bug at the end, where when I tried to replace a rune when all my rune slots were full, it just flashed the limit like I was making an error, even though the green rune I was putting in said it needed 4, and the green limit said I had 4 available - same with blue rune and a 2-limit. I guess maybe there's something like if you take out a red rune it reduces the limits for the other colors too? Not clear, looked like a bug.
I actually really liked this. Something about having to do the colour mechanic (which I played with strict ruleset) scratches the tactical side of my brain while I feel like a badass murdering stuff. The premise of the combat is fairly simple, but I found it engaging and I think it's because the two "natures" orange and purple have abilities which is very much its own ranged/melee archetype and I liked how you were effectively forced to swap between them constantly. The combat model is not immune to you kind of just using the same long range poke moves and kiting, but I think more up close and interesting abilities were made rewarding enough that I didn't gravitate towards this playstyle much outside of boss encounters. I also think the combos are good. The melee and ranged weapons feel different where there's combinations of having to hold down the attack button or hitting it at certain timings. This is by no means a new mechanic, but one that is missing from many combat models and I think it contributes to my enjoyment here. I talked about the combat a lot because that's by far my favourite part of the game. The visuals are nice I think environments look really pretty but enemy design is pretty simple and kinda whatever. I think the story is not bad and does its job, but it's a very simple story. This is a simple game with a combat model that just feels fun to *play*. There are many abilities on short cooldowns that feel rewarding to use when you use them well. I got this game for literally $2 on a website and I think it's amazing for the types of discount prices you find this game at sometimes. I would compare this game to another I've played called Death's Door. I also think it's just a fun arpg that keeps you engaged due to the pacing of moving place to place being dialed in well where you never feel like the game is a drag. Idk man, I just liked it.
meh Boring, janky, poorly written. Choices don't matter at all. Bullet sponge enemies and they hit like a truck. Attacks are poorly telegraphed, melee is a death sentence. The rune system is simply bad. Controls are trash, inconsistent. Not just combat. When moving, shooting, it seems like only 8 directions exist in the game hence controlling the character with an analog sticks. UI is terrible. No minimap. Skipping dialogue is not fast enough. The only good thing i can bring up is that you can remap the by default awful controls. Hack & slash my a... more like hacked and slashed my wallet. PS: the main character is terrrrrrible. She's obnoxious and whiney af. I just can't stand listening to her.
