I unfortunately cannot recommend this game. I will lay out the reasons here. I played through the first bit of the game before the last update. It felt very unrefined at that point so I uninstalled and waited until this update. I want to preface everything I type here by saying this game has come quite a long way and I like where it is going and I am going to look forward to playing more. This update Came around and I decided to install again. Here are the PRO things I like: 1.) When the combat works it is interesting. The way adrenaline works expands combat and adds depth to it, especially having a second weapon set. There are two points here that I will make in the CONS section about the adrenaline system and the combat. 2.)The setting is pretty cool. I like the enemy variety I have seen and I like the fact there are harder enemies I can challenge by using an item on them. 3.)There is a rune system that allows you to enhance your equipment to help customize your build. Now here are the CONS: 1. Adrenaline system is not tutorialized and there is no tooltips to show you what each adrenaline skill does. Some are attacks and some are buffs. It would be nice to be able to see what the buff actually does. 1b, There is no way to tell how long an ailment will last or how long a buff will last. " is this poison going away soon or should I use a living bracelet?" 2.Parrying does not work right. Im not sure if I am not doing it right, or I dont have the right abilities but I have tried over and over. 3. Enemies lock onto you so when you dodge they will actuallly turn in mid air, or mid swipe to hit you if you dodge out of the way. This defeats the purpose of dodging. It becomes attrition or who can hit and stun the other person first. 4. When you die you just lose some of your ash. There is no getting that ash back. You will die to the jank such as getting stuck on geometry, or controls not being responsive enough, 5. Controls are not responsive or tight. This is extremely important when doing an action RPG ala soulsike. If combat doesn't feel right then it kinda makes everything else the game has going for it worthless. 6. Fast travel is kinda meager. You should be able to travel all over the place from each shrine. It is basically wasting the players time making them go through each area over and over. 7. your weapon sets should also change your armor sets. I know this is rare...but if you have two different sets and you are doing a dexterity/ strength build you may want to have an armor set that is lighter and has more dexterity enhancements whereas for your strength build you may want a shield and different armor that allows you to tank hits more. These are just a few things that I see. I support the hell out of this DEV. I am wataching from the sidelines eagerly awaiting the next update.
oui
If you've played DS 1, 2 and 3, Elden Ring, Sekiro, and Lords of the Fallen, Remnant 1 and 2, and you just need more soulslike at any cost, this game may be for you. This is real hard to get into after having experienced other soulslikes. DS 1 from 2011 blows this away. I know you can't really compare a AAA to indie release, but at the end of the day, you only have so much time so you
Better than Lords Of The Fallen (2023).
So I picked this game up on sale for 9 dollars and it is sort of addicting. I like being able to rest and then kill everything again in the same area to grind up my skills tree. My computer locked up at 6 hours and Steam deleted my save game so I had to start over, this was not the games fault. I got to the first boss behind a fog wall I died 17 times before finally killing it whew. I have watched some other players on youtube with their walk through, the future looks difficult to get through and I doubt I'll ever finish the game, but for the price I paid it is ok. It is as hard as Dark Souls 2 and 3. There seems to be areas in the game that are just there to confuse as they do not lead on to the main path you would normally take for progression. I wish there was more information out there to help me understand the build tree. So far after 15 hours I have not been able to locate a Great Sword or a Halberd which is a bummer. Some of the enemies have twice the reach that I do, so that feels unbalanced. The environments can be somewhat samey and I often feel disorientated. I do recommend playing "Back To Ashes" even if you never finish, because it has it's own charm and it is a fun time waster. But, wait for a deep sale OK. I have not encountered any bugs so far. I will try my best to carry-on and hope that my save game never gets deleted again, points at Steam. One thing about the game that doesn't sit right with me is when you die, you lose some of your ashes, and that is your money to buy more skills, the game is not like Dark Souls where when you die your goodies fall on the ground and you can fight your way back to reclaim them. I want to use my fire ball but for some reason the game always says that I am out of adrenaline right at the wrong moments, I wish I could figure out how to get more adrenaline and this is not clear in the game mechanics. Update: I finally made it all the way to the end of the game, and although I tried several attempts at killing the final boss I finally had to give up the battle, it was not worth the stress, so good luck to you and I hope you can kill him for me !
Unfortunately, Back to Ashes doesn't put its best foot forward. The controls are too clunky, direction is too unclear, and the game is overall too janky for me to recommend it.
Bought this a month or two ago and tried it out. At that time it just didn't catch my attention. Combat is a little clunky and the graphics aren't top tier. However I always try to come back to a game after a while and I did that with this one. I now really like the game play loop and the environments, and there is so much treasure everywhere! Still wishing I could find a better weapon though. Still stuck on 1st sword and I'm kinda still finding my way around first dungeon. But this is a fun game if you are into dungeon crawlers check this one out! Be patient with it and learn the combat and menus after that its a blast.
Pretty fun, has a good vibe as well. Reminds me a little bit of Knights of the Temple and dark souls.
The game is very good and Dark soul related. I am enjoying the game so far. The only changes i would like to see in the game is adding a jump mechanic because it would be cool. The other thing would be is improvement on the stamina and reduce the cost by like 5% or something for everyone. Feels like I run out of stamina a lot in the game more than health. But overall the theme of the game is very well made. If you like Demon souls or Dark Souls I would highly recommend this game for anyone who is wanting a challenge. (Hope there will be character customization later on....)
