Cool little metroidvania
This would have been interesting as a student project released for free on Itch. It's a poorly executed FPS that clearly had a lot of heart behind it, and is mainly here to tell a story. As a shooter, platformer and "metroidvanian", it fails for a lot of reasons that I'm sure Renegade Sector has grown past by now. The music is alright, the overall look is unique and interesting, and it does a lot with a pretty abstract story idea and very few assets. I think if Samuel Taylor Coleridge saw a video game, he would simply take more laudanum.
Engaging plot, fun mechanics, short but sweet. Didn't expect the plot to be as interesting as it was, there were some fun twists and reveals I won't spoil here. Wish I saw games like this more often, definitely going to check out the other TotRS titles. Took me 3 1/2 hours to get all of the achievements. Some criticism:
The flame orb is far too overpowered, and far too easy to get. beat the last boss with it in under 30 seconds. Some parts of the game are heavily laggy.
Absolute bop, totally not worth it at the $10 price point, 5-7$ you'd likely feel you'd get more bang for the buck, you'd have to do two runs for all achievos ,
Short 'n' sweet FPS, that's an easy recommend for me whenever it's on sale for between $2-4 or so. One of those indie games that you can immediately tell is a developer's true passion project, made without broad appeal or profitability in mind. Plenty of other reviews have described the game's appeal beyond that, so I'll make this short and recommend that you give them a look. And, ngl - I like almost every game I play. So if you've got more specific tastes, or a certain expectations you want games to consider them worthy of your money, I'd definitely recommend checking the rest of these reviews out
Ignore the amount of playtime I have, btw - I paused the game to go get a drink during my second play session, and ended up taking a phone call and going to bed lol. Anyways: this game actually took me about an hour and a half to finish 100%, after taking my time to really explore every crevice of the world, and appreciate everything it has to offer. That was across a few short play sessions, over the course of about a month - so, repeatedly re-familiarizing myself with it defo took a little bit of time as well.
I guess the best way to describe this game would be "eh." It's cool that it's based off an old poem (Though having little to actually do with it) and the audio and trippy visuals are cool. I like that you fight weird geometric shapes, as it reminds me of old NES games where the enemies were unintelligible objects that just shot projectiles. Calling this a metroidvania is a huge stretch. It's a basic open world FPS game that takes less than an hour to finish. The combat isn't great but it's playable. Altogether it's too easy but I guess for what it is it doesn't matter. No real puzzles and the only exploration element is finding a new gun to break down a barrier. Not terrible but not good either. Better for playing in a spree of FPS games because as its own thing it's pretty weak. Not worth $10.
This game is too short to be worth 10 dollars, but if its on sale, pick it up. The entirety of the game felt like just "level 1" on what should've been 7 - 8 different worlds to explore. I had fun, and I liked this game just enough to offer some constructive criticism. While having a good atmosphere (not great) and a solid mechanical base of guns, enemies, and metroidvania elements, this title is missing a few things. Movement is a little clunky, and I would've expected a "metroidvania" to boost or supplement it at some point. Be careful around death pits, I had my jumps fail to input several times. Controls and gui left something to be desired. Wished there was some sort of indicator of how much health I had. Wish I could individually select any of my weapons instead of just scrolling through them. Wished there was a way to know how many secrets I found and how many are left to go. Tweaking your mouse's sensitivity in the menu needed a slight change. If one is using a slide bar to adjust a setting, the user should have a numerical representation of how they are altering the value. Bosses, while serviceable, left a little to be desired. Needed just a little extra something to make them not damage sponges. Game is sorely lacking in personality. The enemies aren't memorable, and the ""story"" is totally bland. The environment is charming and had some cool vistas, but still could've done with a sprinkling of some "fun" stuff. The guns edge slightly towards being a little "bleh", but they were fun enough to keep me wanting to play. From a game design perspective, everything is very respectable. Very logical mechanics and level design, but this game just needed some sorta idea, something to punch it up. I had fun, nothing to hate about this game, just a slightly missed opportunity.
great music, great grafix, great environment, great enemy, got guns, i like gam
An exceedingly short game for a title that doesn't really attempt to do anything new in the FPS or Metroidvania genre, you could even argue that it only meets the bare minimum for both criteria. For an FPS, yes the game is in first person, and yes you get weapons that shoot projectiles, but that is about it. The enemies are the same generic floating shapes and/or eyeballs for most of the experience, they serve very little purpose besides just being an obstacle because "a game needs to have enemies", they are so barebones with their AI, attacks, visual variety and overall don't really do much to warrant wanting to fight them in the first place, not even dropping health. Going back to the weapons, you get five all in all throughout the course of a game, I wont go too much into detail on them because there is very little to say, you get a comically weak pistol that has very slow bullet travel (which is in line with projectiles as a whole for this game), a shotgun that looks almost unidentifiable as a shotgun which fires in a comically small range and with an even more comical bullet spread, then you get an assault rifle, you get the general idea here, nothing we haven't seen done to death. Also with those weapons you usually pick it up at the end of a boss fight, all of which are very easy (bosses generally only having one or two attacks) but take what feels like forever between your low damage and the bosses repeating what little they can do. In regards to metroidvania aspects this game falls really flat, yes you can "explore" but that generally is down to choosing either "the intended path" or "the side path with a bonus at the end" and that's about it. Honestly I can sum this up as being definitely A Video Game, it ticks all the boxes it needs to be what it says but offers absolutely nothing more.
