Review with accompanying screenshots and videos in Sinical Network
https://www.sinicalanimenetwork.com/post/lighthouse-of-guiding-flames-quick-thoughts Lighthouse of guiding flames is a fantasy visual novel with mystery and horror elements. It features the female protagonist Ethani who, over the course of 12 days, tells her story where she is chosen as a human sacrifice to appease a vengeful god in her remote village, goes to a lighthouse run by the keeper Astaban, meets a few people, and moves on in her life (or afterlife). The story starts off slow at first as it recounts Ethani's story backwards from day 12 to 1. Then it gets better in the second part where her story is told from day 1 to day 12, and the player gets to choose various dialogue options leading to several different endings. I like the part where each choice towards a specific route has a special colour to help players reach that ending (yellow for run away, orange for fight, and red for accept fate). There also is a compass icon that will show the player's inclination towards a particular route and ending. And finally there is a published community guide to help players get all endings and achievements. In terms of artwork, it has a variety of nice, cute, and spooky CGs. The background music is good and appropriate for most of the scenes. I especially like Timeless shore, Endless minute, and Guiding flame for the fantasy themes, as well as I'll save you during the good endings as they feel rewarding. There are a few cons though. I have come across a number of spelling errors during my playthrough in which some of them completely change the meaning, which detracts from the experience, although some of the patch note announcements have reported that the developer and translators are fixing them. In addition, none of the endings truly feel satisfying in the sense that there is no perfect ending. The hardest ending and achievement Persistence Lights the Way can be difficult to figure out without referring to the guide, and it feels more disappointing than satisfying after attempting multiple playthroughs of the game. Lastly, I purchased the soundtrack DLC on Steam but was disappointed to receive a blank folder and Steam music player wouldn't play any of the BGM. Hopefully, the developer can address this major fault sometime in the future. After spending around 3 hours to get all endings and achievements, Lighthouse of guiding flames is an interesting supernatural visual novel with plenty of background music and artwork at a reasonable price, although with a few faults. Therefore, I can recommend this game when it is at a discount to be more proportional to the playing time, or when the English translation is improved. With that being said, I do not recommend buying the soundtrack DLC on Steam until this major fault is addressed.
Recent updates
The developer has patched the game on July 2022 and June 2024 to improve the English subtitles and make the soundtracks available again to those who purchased the soundtrack DLC on Steam. Lighthouse of guiding flames is a visual novel about a girl named Ethani who lost her way and ended up at the lighthouse, a place where the time doesn't exist and travellers end up arriving at when they need the time to figure out their way. This is a pretty nice little story about self-discovery and understanding the feelings of others, made through the various choices, which affect the outcome of Ethani's fate. When she arrives at the lighthouse she doesn't quite remember who she is, why she ended up at the lighthouse and where was she going. On the first playthrough you get to learn a little by reading in inverted order, when it's done you can start from day one and actually make choices which will determine the outcome of Ethani's story and if she manages to overcome the cruel fate that awaits her back in her world. Summary: - Decent fantasy story, which is at times twisted, depends on what ending you're playing through. - [strike]Writing is fine, but the whole game is riddled with typos and at least one line of untranslated text. Not a huge flaw, as it's still understandable, but be warned that it's not perfect either.[/strike] Developers updated the game, so writing should be alright now. - Multiple endings. - 12 funny short side stories in extras to read after completing the game. - Artwork is really gorgeous, chibi variations are really cute. - There are a few cases of bloody/disturbing imagery. - Nice soundtrack. Overall, I recommend this for a short fantasy read.
I'm an avid reader and surprisingly, I have not really played a visual novel game yet - gamebooks, yes; adventure games, yes; but not VNs. Lighthouse of Guiding Flames is kind of my "visual novel 101" and I've got to say it's a great first experience! | To put it simply, Lighthouse of Guiding Flames is a solid VN with an intriguing and sometimes amusing storyline, great art, and what I love most of all is the atmosphere created by the amazing music/soundtracks. The OST complements the gameplay so well and it matches perfectly with the mood of the scene you're reading/experiencing.
Watch me play!
Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2asDIdBQrs Part 2: Pending - These are all gameplay videos so if you don't want to spoil the story for yourself, maybe you could watch the front a bit or skip around if you want to, before deciding whether or not you want to buy and play the game! - P/S: I'm planning to add a narrated version later. Let me know in the comments if you'd like that! :) I don't want to spoil the story too much so here's a really general synopsis: In this game, you'll experience the story as Ethani, a sweet and naive yet noble 12-year-old girl who is just wrecked with guilt and conflicting thoughts. She has just fled her hometown and her family due to a really messed up tradition while being fatally injured, and found herself sailing towards a unique lighthouse on an island where time stood still, giving her the precious time she needs to make a crucial decision about her life and the lives of her family and the people in her village. Thankfully, she's not alone on that island. The lighthouse is manned by a mysterious yet friendly lighthouse keeper who is kind enough to be her sounding board as she tries to make sense of her experiences and thoughts, and ultimately, what she wants to do next. Of course, she will also meet various interesting characters along the way while being a guest at the lighthouse. Although I find the "messed-up tradition" part of the story quite shocking as well as being a bit incredulous and hard to believe, I enjoyed sharing Ethani's journey, as painful as certain parts of it may be. You'll end up feeling sorry for her because she was forced to make a decision that I daresay most adults wouldn't even be able to do at such a tender age. It's a tight battle between the desire to be selfless to protect one's family and the need for self-preservation (
Basically, she doesn't want to die yet
) and she doesn't have a lot of time left to decide. Now, the writing here is simply amazing. I know it's probably a translated version and whoever did the translation... well, kudos to you! It's not 100% perfect I'd say (there are typos and certain sentences do sound a bit... odd) but it's still very beautifully put together and manages to convey the story in an eloquent way. If you're an avid reader (of fiction) or a fan of VNs, I'm sure you'll find the writing fantastic. The VN does intentionally add in a couple of humorous scenes - you'll know them when you see them - that I think could have been done a bit more subtly. Sometimes, it does feel like the game is pointing out at those funny scenes and telling you to laugh. Don't get me wrong though - these scenes are pretty amusing but when it's so obviously pointed out, it does take a bit of the humor out of the scene. I'm not much of an artist myself but I also enjoyed the art here. Love the anime characters and the evocative backgrounds (especially during the later part of the game - no spoilers! :P)... by the way, did I mentioned how much I love the OST in this game? Yes, I think it did but I'll mention it again anyway! It's truly magnificent and every track fits the scene/mood/writing so perfectly. To sum up, I'll add in a TL;DR version here:
Pros
+ Fantastic soundtracks. Really sets the atmosphere for every scene + Amazing illustrations - Need I say more? :) + I assume the game's originally written in Russian because of the little hiccup at the beginning, when I booted up the game. So, taking that into account, the translation/writing here is very well-done. + Story's pretty intriguing although I do find the "tradition" the girl is subjected to being rather messed-up + Game's a bit short - I'm a pretty quick reader so I reckon I'll complete the game within 2 hours or so, but I still think the price is right! + No narration but personally, I find that this is actually a Pro rather than Con. + After knowing the story, you will supposedly get to decide Ethani's fate by making certain choices.
Cons
- The funny scenes can be added a bit more subtly I think, mainly because I feel like it breaks the immersion of the previous scenes and the transition can sometimes be a bit abrupt. Maybe this is a common feature in VNs, I'm not sure - again, this is my first proper VN game so pardon me if I'm not familiar enough with the genre to comment on this. - There's a couple of typos and some sentences (out of the hundreds of lines of dialogue, mind you) may require some rewriting. - The game should be set to English by default? It was in Russian (as you can see in my stream) during my first boot-up of the game.
Overall
Personally, I think that the main selling point for visual novels is not only the story but also the atmosphere it can provide, and when it comes to those factors, Lighthouse of Guiding Flames definitely hits the nail on the head! I still find the sudden humorous scenes a bit hard to get used to, but the game does have a well-written story that will make you feel for the poor young protagonist who is forced into making a difficult live-or-die decision that, honestly, I couldn't even do (and I'm more than two times her age!). Definitely a must-buy for fans of the genre!
Lighthouse of guiding flames -
Kara no Shojo, Lucy(The Eternity She Wished For)
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2414356896
Among the Visual Novels produced by indie creators, this one is definitely a gem. And a decently polished one at that. Apart from a huge budget (and voice acting, which would be a tall order), this VN has everything you would expect from a big name studio: Plenty of beautiful graphics both big and small, a relatable protagonist, interesting characters, a myriad of choices leading to diverse scenes - both serious and funny, music that sets the mood just right, short extra stories, and of course, a story with several routes and endings that will give you something to think about upon completion. You can tell that a lot of thought has been put into every aspect of the game. When needed, the text box changes styles and locations to be more fitting for certain scenes. The narration and pacing are balanced - the scenes seem to have just the right length depending on what they are supposed to convey to the reader. Every ending adds something new to the overall reading experience, providing more interesting details about the story and the setting. Yes, those are not just "stupid choice -> bad ending in 4 lines" endings that are common in these kinds of games. Lighthouse of guiding flames is the story of a young girl facing an overwhelmingly difficult and morally complex problem. Upon her arrival in a fairytale-like world, she gets some time to prepare and some much-needed advice from its peculiar residents. All so that she can come to better understand both the situation and herself - all in order to make the right decision. The biggest point of criticism for me are the occasional typos - which the developers are well aware of. There's already been a patch to fix some of those and more have been promised. By the way, in case the game starts up in a language you're not familiar with, "settings" is the third option on the start screen.
A surprisingly interesting little VN that offered something I don't typically get from VNs this size. A good, unique story that doesn't overstay its welcome. Only downside is this VN could REALLY use a copyeditor - the writing overall is good and competent, but there are tons of syntax errors ('and' is 'abd', 'a lot' becomes 'al ot', etc) that a copyeditor would catch. Doesn't hinder the story, but does take a layer of polish away from an otherwise hidden gem!
An enjoyable visual novel about a girl trying to do what's right versus what's expected of her. The characters are pleasing to look at, the chibi CGs are cute and there are plenty of great CGs as well. Definitely make sure to read it forwards after reading it backwards to fill in a lot of holes. Beware that there are a lot of typos here. If I had to guess on average, there are 1-2 per 10-15 screens. It's not enough to really distract you from the story, but it is quite annoying to see just how many there are.
Young Ethani finds herself washed up on unfamiliar shore. There is a Lighthouse, a beacon for those who have lost their way, its Keeper tells her. What happened to Ethani? And will she find her way after leaving this mystical place? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HSI6B-SoDk
I liked...

The concept (the story is first told backwards as a kinetic novel, and then from the beginning, where the player can try and reach a better outcome—I really enjoyed that)
The choices (Ethani has some tough decisions to make, which keep the story interesting; also the game overall is easy to navigate, since you can see in which direction each choice leads)
The characters
The art and music

I didn't care for...

The tonal shifts (at times, the game drops into chibi comedic scenes or grimdark tragic teritorry, with little subtlety)
The leaps of logic (a few plot points just don't feel very realistic, in my opinion)

Verdict
The melancholic Lighthouse of Guiding Flames is not the perfect visual novel, but it's an interesting one. The story can take you in very different directions depending on what choices you make, and some flaws of the plot do not take away from the message or overall experience. Recommended.
