The sprites looks good and the music is serviceable. For this price I recommend to anyone that are used to snes platformers.

Thanks steam for removing greenlight, now we can enjoy gems like this that could have gone missing due to people not appreciating their beauty. Why do I say "gem", this is the paragon of diamonds, the cusp of any and each elevations, the apex of species, the summum of the unattainable, the acme of videogame development, the apogee of human history, the zenith of ninja adventures! Why are you steel reading this and no playing it already?
I am 32 years old. My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old. When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing. Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side. With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happiness of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay. After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like. Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends. Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together. Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that. Thank you.

I got this game for free as a prize and I still paid too much for it. Awful controls, boring bosses and unfair levels with blind drops into pits. It's like a 20 year old flash game someone had the audacity to ask money for.

Sorry, despite my appreciation for the buxom thumbnail and retro platformers in general, there's not a lot to recommend Akane the Kunoichi. The good: The graphics are fine, though I do feel the pixel art character design for our protagonist is a bit dumpy. If you just want to push through the levels quickly, you often can - but you may miss those three kimono collectibles per level. The game is not too difficult for like 2/3 of the game - until it suddenly is. Music is acceptable in a generic unlicensed kind of way. The bad: When using a controller, there's too much delay between the moment you push a button and the moment Akane acts. And this is definitely a game you want a controller to play. The wall hugging mechanic especially always feels unnaturally delayed and just isn't fun. You're supposed to be a spritely ninja, and you never, ever get that feeling. The bosses are few and far between, and the ones that are there are ridiculously boring. Just hit them in the face and don't let them jump on you. The f*cking snow levels. The game can be pretty easy till 4-1, and then it's maddening. With the controls already being unresponsive, that particular frostbitten hell was my breaking point. Did anyone actually play test this? The verdict: Maybe I've been spoiled by games like The Messenger that actually do retro platformers right, but I just did not have a lot of fun with Akane the Kunoichi.
I 100% This Game Out of Pure Spite
I finished this game not out of joy, but out of the sheer rage it caused me. Like everything, it has its positives and negatives... though the negatives definitely win here.

Positives

[] The somewhat cutesy, generic art style... it’s okay. [] The ending was sweet; seeing the heroine end up with the main love interest was a nice touch (you obviously need to grab all the kimonos).
That’s... pretty much it.

Negatives

[] NO tutorial : If you don’t check the controls, you’ll end up wondering why you can’t get a specific kimono on stage 5-1. Turns out, you can switch between three jutsus... but the game never tells you that. [] Artificial difficulty : Incredibly frustrating, including:
[] Very clunky controls. [] Weird enemy placement in several areas.
Levels 4-3 through 5-3 are some of the worst levels I’ve played in a long time... especially 5-1 to 5-3, which are full of “GOTCHA!” moments that make you want to throw your computer out the window.

I usually enjoy difficult games, but this one’s challenge feels incredibly unfair instead of satisfying. I almost ragequit multiple times near the end of levels 4-3 and 5-3... but my anger fueled me to finish it.

Final Thoughts
My hands hurt, my patience is gone, but at least finishing it brought a small sense of victory. The story conclusion made it somewhat worth it... I guess? Still... this game is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO BAD. I don’t recommend it. 3/10

"I didn’t beat the game because I loved it... I beat it because it made me angry enough to win out of spite."
