This game is bad but it is not the worst game ever. It is basically a boring walking simulator with poor graphics and subpar repetitive sounds. The game play is not interesting. I do think the premise of the game is fine but the execution of it is not good. I was hoping to see some scarier imagery but that did not happen. For achievement hunters the game can be finished in less than a hour and they are not hard to get even though they are a bit buggy. $4.99 is the current steam price and that is way too much for this. If you get it as a throw in a trade, as a very cheap key from a 3rd party reseller or possibly 90% off from steam sale then I'd say go for it. The 3 main pros of this game are: 1. It is around 30 minutes to play. 2. It has easy steam achievements 3. It has steam trading cards
Okay. Where do we begin? Let's begin with other reviews of 1000 Heads Among the Trees. There are some positive reviews of those who see it as a "WEIRD" and "TRIPPY" game and some negative ones of those who were coming here to play a horror game and were disappointed, because it didn't scare them. Both of these perspectives lack all the context in the world for this one. Let me be paradoxal here: 1000 Heads Among the Trees is not a game. At least, not in a traditional entertainment-first kind of sense. And least of all it is a horror experience, because it doesn't care a single bit about scaring the audience. What is it then? If you've ever happened to go on an ethnographic expedition to a remote village or small town (no matter what country), you will recognize everything immediately. Small decrepit houses, unfinished constructions, idle locals and that one person of whom there is one in the whole region but who knows more important stuff than all the people of this region combined. There's no music. There's no drama. It's an interactive experience. What kind of interactive experience? The Castaneda kind. And that about sums it up. All the unsettling stuff you see are not scares. It's the way this kind of thing feels. It's unsettling to a normal person, it's a window somewhere else to a person who seeks. In that 1000 Heads Among the Trees is a bit reminiscent of Sylvio, but more truthful, more documental. I've seen people complain the game was buggy, that it has 'Jim Sterling written all over it'. What? I've encountered 1(!!) bug - and that was about the photos in my camera. No bugs in the 3D world at all. Glitches? Haven't seen any. Unless you count post-processing in tense moments as glitches which entirely misses the point. The only drawback is the unoptimised performance. The sound design is great. This wind. That ambience. Those teeth-screeching sounds. It's all so simple, so rough and so effective. Summing up, I want to make myself clear: I'm not trying to sound snobbish, I'm trying to speak objectively. 1000 Heads Among the Trees is for people who can and want to pay attention. You can't just jump in for a quick snack of a game - you have to be considerate about it, looking around, exploring, watching, listening. If that's not how you usually go about your games, if you look to have fun - it's completely fine, that's what videogames were made for originally. But you have to understand that this is not your cup of tea. This one tries things differently. Whoever Aaron Oldenburg is, thank you for this outstanding experience!
Genre
Ein First Person Exploration Adventure/Walking Simulator mit leichten Horror Elementen
Story
Fazit

I think it's a well put together "creepy open-world walking simulator"(?) Not really that open world but you can definitely explore without being put on a narrative roller coaster. Back streets, Parks, Cemeteries, etc. You also have the ability to take pictures and then show them to the different townspeople for opinions or clues maybe? I wouldn't know. I'm really not sure what I was supposed to do AT ALL and then realized it's really not that kind of game I had to slow down and just enjoy the mood and atmosphere instead of chasing objectives. Not really essential by any means though. You can move along without feeling you've missed much but it's one of those games I wish had been left in the oven for just a little longer because it definitely shows some signs of potential. Still recommended for anybody interested so it gets a thumbs up.
