It's funny I've played 3 "zelda-like" action games back to back and they were all great and although similar from a high level, very different in how they felt. Ys Origin is the "crunchiest" of the 3 and most likely due to its age, but it's straight forward in its approach and I think that's why its so enjoyable. It's responsive and you feel strong mowing through mobs like it's nothing. The tower is designed really well and feels like a lot of thought went into the puzzles at each section; the backtracking always feel great and keeping things in tower segments makes it never feel like a pain. I will say the 3 required playthroughs to get the actual ending and canon route is interesting and definitely a product of older game design, especially given they are identical in gameplay. It was nice being able to breeze through it on very easy but still it wasn't the most engaging. The 3 perspectives was neat but it left me scratching my head as they all differed a bit in the events that played out, versus it just being 3 different POVs on the same events. I feel like the game could've just been Toal's perspective and still worked but on the other hand I do enjoy having played the other POVs and gotten closer to Yunica and Hugo as I think it made Toal's route land better. The story works as a great prequel and an intriguing setup to the world. Overall a really fun time and a great introduction into one of Falcom's legendary series.
