Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun

Fun and enjoyable! I like the art style and gameplay. Nice retro feel to it. Excellent!

This game makes powerscalers go bald. Very fun boomer shooter, guns feel satisfying to use, enemies are fun to fight, immersive and exciting soundtrack, fun retro visuals, unpretentious at what it does. You're here to finish the fight in brutal fashion. Space marines know no fear, but they do know how to hide under cover from Greater Demons.

Extremely disappointing. I played the game on the ultra-violence (or whatever the equivalent is called), and it was never particularly interesting. It starts shallow and never really develops, so the repetition becomes painful very quickly. Every fight feels the same. Enemies either stand still and shoot or walk directly at you. There is almost no enemy synergy, no interesting dodging, no resource pressure, and very little reason to swap weapons. Most enemies die instantly; the tougher ones do not require a different strategy, they just take longer to kill. The weapon roster is similarly flat. The boltgun is good at almost everything, the shotgun is terrible, and the heavier weapons mostly feel like variations on the same idea. Ammo is everywhere, so you can use the strongest options constantly. Even the melee attack feels pointless because there is no reason to conserve ammunition or take the risk of getting close. The level design is mostly corridors connecting arenas, with very little exploration or memorable layout. The secrets are laughably bad: usually behind a crate, in an obvious side area, or not hidden at all. The game even counts power-ups sitting in plain sight as secrets. The game looks good, the weapons sound punchy, and I encountered no major bugs. But technical competence cannot compensate for how stale and mechanically empty it feels. I went in as a boomer-shooter fan rather than a Warhammer fan, so lore references could not carry the experience for me. As a shooter, it lacks nearly everything I enjoy about the genre. I used to think the boomer-shooter formula was impossible to screw up. Boltgun proved me wrong. 3.5/10
