Yes, it's a - ahem - spiritual successor to FTL. Yes, it's a little surprising that Games Workshop have been calm or ignorant enough to not sue this game into oblivion. Maybe as they didn't call it Space Hammer Soldier War. No, it doesn't matter as it's a fun, fantastic game with deep strategy and flavourful events, easier than FTL even on highest difficulty but still a good challenge. Also has some much needed QOL over FTL such as actually putting crew where you want without playing musical chairs, and kindly letting you learn the game faster by largely telling you what the enemy can actually do from the get-go. I only touched the Wiki after a successful Torment XII run. And yes, my Barbarian commander is an unhinged psychopath and I will always support him in his dreams of total evisceration of anything that looks at him funny <3
Like FTL? It's basically a badass sequel with expanded systems in a new universe. Great game.
This game is amazing. So much fun. Lots of content. F Workshop and their lawsuit, 10/10 for me. The only problem and it might just be me. But it takes a long time to boot and sometimes the display gets all messed up when I tab out. But other than that the game runs perfect.
Yes, it's an improvement over a 13 year old game it is based on. You shouldn't play it because the developer is apparently disrespectful to you.
Anime in Void War
A small part of the game's content is intentionally imbued with distinctive aspects of one sci-fi anime series (and so it constitutes a "parody" of it):
Neon Genesis Evangelion
...
It's in the form of humans operating ships, described as having arrived from another universe or dimension.
The overall similarity doesn't reach legal infringement threshold and the differences include that the humans are not drawn in an anime style. The shared aspects include:
The human group is called SDF and possesses superior technology (like the SSDF in NGE does). The humans' faces have similarities with faces of pilots in NGE, most notable one their apparent age. They lack the natives' psionic abilities and they are superior at operating combat craft. The appearance of the group's ships is reminiscent of that of non-human living beings in NGE.
Even though the appearances of this content take up a tiny portion of the game, it is common to experience them at least once per "run". ("Run" is an instance of playing the game from the start to the end. This game is designed to be short but played many times). The insertion of this content eradicates the primacy of Void War's own world, reducing it to one of the two worlds within the game. That's one reason why I wouldn't like it even if I loved the anime. The NGE-themed group is portrayed as the winner in the conflict between it and the natives of Void War (even though it is not a big challenge for the player). The insertion of this constitutes an assertion of dominance over the player by the developer. The first time it is encountered, it is a "pie in the face". All subsequent times it is encountered are instances of the player choosing to be dominated and humiliated by the developer again, as if choosing to kiss the developer's foot, just so that he can continue to derive enjoyment from the game.

Who made Void War?
The game is said to be made by "Tundra", and there's been noticeable scarcity of places with an explanation as to who "Tundra" represents (one such place being the endgame credits). I can do no more than to invite you to reflect on this.

Other thoughts
The game uses up a lot of CPU power for a 2D game. It panders to new players in distasteful ways, of which the most glaring example is that the tutorial difficulty is called 'Normal'. The game does come with a few good, non-obvious ideas, of which the most significant one is the realization that a (borderline) grimdark setting is a good match for FTL's game mechanics. There is more that I could criticize Void War for, but I don't want to effectively provide advice on how to improve the game. The game is rotten at its core, irrespective of how fun or polished it may seem. Don't demean yourself by giving it your time and attention.
Void War has the same problem FTL has where there's one consistent way to win against the final boss and if you didn't build for that over the course of your run you can get f*cked. Why even let the player experiment with different ways of tackling ships if ultimately all of them except the 'correct' build lose at the end?
Please never stop updating this masterpiece.

40k FTL but it's legally distinct and therefore cool
more like foid war, too many 'females'
