Void Raiders is "radical" top down rogue-lite shmup, with permanent character progression, character centric gameplay and never ending carnage in randomly generated environments.

A budget mix of Nuclear Throne with some of the roguelike mechanics of Risk of Rain. Gameplay consists of blasting baddies on the way to collectables to unlock the elevator to the next floor of baddies. Similar to Risk of Rain, there's a timer at the top of the screen that raises the difficulty of enemies as it ticks upward, so speed is encouraged. Enemies constantly spawn in on top of you, ruining any tactical feel from the top-down action. Damage done by enemies seems to vary between "nothing to worry about" and "oops you died", rarely striking a happy medium. There are 3 characters, each with 2 very small skill trees of passive abilities to upgrade. The characters are rather bland. Boris, for example, can hold LMB to shoot, or hold RMB to... shoot faster. The pixel art visuals are amateurish and unattractive. Obstacles such as crates and tables, enemies, and treasure-containing lockers all melt together in a difficult-to-read blob of dark pixels. There's no tutorial and virtually no explanation of game mechanics. There's a bartender who allows you to select a drink, which gives you various bonuses. One of these is "Start the game with 2 datacores and 2 void cores." I still have no idea what void cores are, though I think they're the green boxes you find as objectives. All in all, it feels like an uncompleted Early Access title. With more characters, extended skill trees, a visual makeover, and some mechanical polish the game could be a solid pickup. Ultimately however, you're better off grabbing one of the games that clearly inspired it, such as Nuclear Throne, Risk of Rain, or Neurovoider.
This review was written for My Curation Page. I received a reviewing copy of this game for free. However, my review is honest.
I received this game via Steam Curator Connect. Thanks! Skip to the bottom for my Final Thoughts I'm no stranger to roguelike bullet hells and Void Raiders is no exception. Void Raiders is a mix between Nuclear Throne (a game I have reviewed in the past) and Risk of Rain, both of which are games that I deeply enjoy.
Graphics
Void Raiders is a top down pixel art bullet hell and the graphics are decent. The levels are really well done, the environment is nice and the lighting is great. Unfortunately, you won't have time to enjoy the scenery due to the hordes of enemies shooting you. The enemies look nice and, depending on the map you are on, change in accordance to the theme (Alien, Human, Robotic). The three playable characters however aren't nearly as well done as the levels or aliens, which is unfortunate because they are the centerpiece of the game.
Audio & Soundtrack
The audio department of Void Raiders is mediocre to say the least. Certain tracks are pretty good although most are mediocre at best. The theme of the music does fit the overall theme of the game and does sound like it belongs in a futuristic spaceship. If you enjoy heavy Drum and Bass electronic music, then perhaps you'd enjoy the soundtrack for Void Raiders, however it just isn't my cup of tea.
Gameplay
I actually had quite a bit of fun playing Void Raiders. Like I mentioned earlier, I enjoy bullet hell rogue like games such as Nuclear Throne, Risk of Rain and Realm of the Mad God, so Void Raiders is no exception. However I found the three playable characters; Tina, Boris and Gudrun, to be quite lacking. During my runs in the game, I almost exclusively played as Gudrun, the only good character out of the three. Boris is mediocre and Tina is absoultely atrocious to play as. On the other hand, I really enjoy the permanent progression you gain by playing a character more so there is incentive to maining a character. Before I move on, Void Raiders does not have a Tutorial and it took me a while to really figure most things out. Luckily, I have played my fair share of Nuclear Throne so my first couple runs were decent. If you're new to the genre, be warned as the game drops you in the middle of numerous enemies and chances are you'd be dead before you knew it.
Storyline
Sadly, there is no storyline to Void Raiders. Honestly, it's a shame because the game can be perfectly set up for a decent story if the developers had just written exposition. There are 3 characters who are all completely different who could have interesting backstories and every few levels there are bosses who could provide exposition as to where you are, why you are there and what your goal is. Unfortunately, none of that exists.
Final Thoughts
In the end I enjoyed my time playing Void Raiders. If you're going into the game expecting the Holy Grail love-child between Nuclear Throne and Risk of Rain, you'll be disappointed. However, if you're looking for a cheap and fun alternative to the aforementioned games then look no further than Void Raiders. If this game hadn’t released at virtually the same time as Enter the Gungeon, I’d be concerned that one inspired the other, which of course isn’t a bad thing. Both games have you and your enemies filling the screen with projectiles in a top-down twin stick shooter. However, rather than tossing a variety of guns at you, Void Raiders gives you some roguelite elements in the form of character progression and upgrades.
The Adjustment Period
I don’t know if I’ve ever played a game so relatively simple that required so much to get used to before it’s really any fun. The first thing I had to do is turn down all of the audio because it was all much louder than it needed to be. All of the music and most of the sounds are good, but I just don’t get why it’s so loud on the default settings. After that I had to turn the screen shake all the way off. It’s also pretty much unbearable with the constant firing and it makes it impossible to really know what’s going on. After you do all of that, things start feeling very familiar if you’ve played some twin sticks. Yet, there’s still some things that you’re going have to get used to. The design is pixel art, which is pretty common even here in the future, but it seems *extra blocky* so there are several cases where it’s very hard to tell the geometry of a room you enter. Sometimes things can be walls that look like a floor pattern or something that you think is a wall is actually more of a ‘waist high wall’ that you can’t move over but you *can* shoot over. This along with some generally odd room designs at times gave me a good bit of frustration, but after some time I kind of felt like my ‘eyes adjusted’ or something and I was about to better discern the odd areas of architecture.
The Allure of Progression
One thing that twin stick shooters, especially more arcadey versions lack, is a sense of progression. Void Raiders shines as much as I think it could with its progression system. It allows you to upgrade the skills and stats of three distinct characters with an XP system and then on top of that it gives you an overall unlocking system that lets you pre-equip small bonuses that you get at the start of each run. Mechanics like this make it feel ok to lose during gameplay because your death at least nets you some XP. Having a decently diverse selection of characters also helps with replayability since you can level each one up separately and start a run with a different one if you’re not getting the results you want. The progression continues in-game as you use the currency that fallen enemies drop to buy a pretty large variety of boosting items (you can end up with potentially dozens in a run) spread throughout and at the end of each level. Some can be as simple as bonus damage, but others can have more unique functionality like increasing the range that you pull pickups toward you or self-regenerating ammunition. It allows you to adjust to the ever-increasing difficulty and toughness of the enemies and lets you customize your experience to a degree.
The Other Stuff
I was a bit surprised that this game was as fun as it was. The initial impressions that Void Raiders gave me had me thinking this was just another hastily made low effort janky waste of time, but it actually had me coming back and trying to make some progress, especially after I got the screen shaking under control. It probably needed just a little bit of a tutorial (or just tooltip text) so I could better grasp what was going on in the beginning, but for a game so cheap, it does have a level of polish that lifts it above the sludge of Steam’s ever-expanding indie cesspool. I can definitely recommend picking this up if you’re a twin stick fan, especially if you can get it on sale since at this point it’s been sold for just over a $1 USD. Don’t judge this one by its cover, it's worth checking out. If you'd like to see more of my reviews, check out my curator page here: http://store.steampowered.com/curator/28346672-Endyo-Gaming/

Very cheap and sloppy. Kinda regret it.
only ever buy this for a dollar, seems incomplete
Not terrible, but rather bland compared to it's competition in the Shmup genre... I reccomend looking elsewhere.
I love shooters, and roguelikes as well. This game kinda makes you feel overpowered sometimes, especially with the sounds. The maps are randomized so there more replayability, and the difficulty ramps up on the spot as you kill hordes of enemies. My only downside of this game is that there's not much to unlock. I already have all three characters at level 10 (max level cap) and all that is left are the trophies. If there are a few thing I want this game to have is more unlockables, increase the level cap, and especially more characters. Other than that, the game is mighty fun. Definitely recommend.
I've had this game in my library for quite awhile and never got around to playing it enough to feel comfortable writing a review but I've come to that point now so, here we go. Void Raiders is a very "light" Rogue-like / "bullet-hell" game. It's a fairly small game that was developed in a short time window. For the time invested in it and the end result however, it's a solid game and I have no complaints about the price I paid for it. (Bought it at the regular price / $4.99, no sale.) This developer has real potential if he can take what he did here and improve upon it in the future. Void Raiders has 3 characters, each with respective talent trees that you can put points into as you level them up. You pretty much choose one of the characters and are thrown right into a randomly generated dungeon to survive as long as you can (or beat it entirely on the first try?). You'll fight your way through several floors, retrieving items on that floor which a helpful arrow will point you in the direction of, while wading through swarms of enemies. After which, the elevator will become accessible and you can return to it to ride it down to the next floor. You'll earn credits which you can use to purchase upgrades inbetween levels, or from vendors throughout the level. None of these are permanent and will all disappear if you die. Your levels and talent tree points are what remain permanent. Every few floors, you'll encounter a boss. Killing the boss earns you a special kind of currency which can be used at the title screen to permanently upgrade your character's equipment. There are 3 bosses in total. That's really all there is to this game. Void Raiders is a short and sweet dive which the creator made in I believe just a year's time, working in his spare time. For what it is and for the time invested in it, he's done a very good job with it. The artwork is simple but clean, the game is well programmed and plays flawlessly. It's a well polished, fun if not bitterly short romp through bullet-ridden mayhem. One "criticism" is something I read from a few other people too. I know the game was intentionally designed to be fast and hectic but many people I saw felt the enemies should have respawned a bit slower and I share this belief.
