Samurai of Hyuga is an interactive novel written by Devon Connell. You play as a badass ronin. Formerly an assassin turned bodyguard. You may pick your name, gender and sexual preferences. The story starts off in an Inn; where you and your charge have come to rest for the night. This is where you get drawn into a ploy that tests your skills. Skills the Emperor himself wishes to know about. Why? You are the ronin of his dreams, of course - lucky you. Or maybe not, for his dreams consist of having you traipse around the country hunting and killing demons. Despite being a masterless, yet talented fighter, who's loyalty is only to yourself, you agree to take on this crazed mission. You don't even believe in demons but your young employer totally has a thing for the Emperor, and so you get dragged along either way. You're given a fancy nickname, a ninja with no combat skills and are sent on your way in a blaze of clumsy glory. Your first target is, sensibly, the closet one. A demon who feeds off of greed. You must enter the city of Jijinto, hunt down, and kill this foe. To make matters even more complicated, demons can appear as human, and you have no clues about your enemy. Ah, and don't forget, your own personal lust for greed will be put to the test. There is so much that one can tempt a wondering ronin with. The cast consists of several members with strong traits. The first being your young employer whom you are the bodyguard of. They can be male or female depending on your earlier chosen preference. Masashi/Masami Hashimoto is a member of a well known Royal family and a shugenja. They are basically an individual who poses a rare magical talent. They are also very vocal, whiney and always displeased by your actions. The ronin clearly must possess a great deal of self-control, as I personally, would have left them to defend for themselves, or killed them and taken their coin long ago, like the heartless, badass, the ronin is made out to be. Next, the right-hand male/female of the Emperor himself and a ninja; Toshio/Toshie. You first met them during the ploy I mentioned earlier, then again a short time later. The ninja is openly hostile and thinks very little of the ronin. They make it clear they don't believe you are befitting of the task at hand. A complete character change takes place, very quickly, during a situation where you learn the true identity of them. The ninja is a Kondo; the lowest class of people. Dark skin is what alerts the world to this. Basically racism. Either way, Tosh quickly settles into a stoic and quiet individual whose only goal is to complete the mission at any cost. Later Hatch stumbles into the group. He's a friendly streetfighter but a bit dim-witted. He has an appreciation of saké which leads to him and the ronin becoming drinking buddies. He favours unconventional forms of combat; mainly using his fist and forehead against armed assailants. Or just his whole body, really. Lastly, Momoko. A beautiful woman you save from a tense situation. Not only is she gorgeous, but she's smart too. Momoko is a doctor with a dark secret - as is the case with most intelligent, stunning women. Despite being asked about your sexual preference, this book doesn't hold any romance within. It is the first book in its series and focuses more on learning about the characters than trying to woo them. I'd not let that fact discourage you, however, as you do get the opportunity to be a perverted person if you so wish. Dishing out lewd comments that make others disapprove is a very enjoyable part of this game, at least for me it was. I really appreciated the amounts of laughs I got, and not just from the comments themselves but from the reactions of my companions. An issue I found with this game is the stat system. Throughout chapters 1-6 your answers define the personality of your character (sort of). This is a very common thing, however, after chapter six the game adds in an attunement stat which becomes the main focus. Attunement is based on 'staying true to yourself'. If you continue to pick answers that align with your character's personality, attunement increases, otherwise it decreases. Having a low attunement will lead to one of two bad endings close to the conclusion of this book. Because this software doesn't allow for saves, this will mean starting over from the very beginning if you intend to try again. There is also no skip feature which can become quite frustrating. Attunement sounds fine in theory but almost forces a stop in character development, from the player's side, if you do not wish to see the bad ending currently. It's a strange route to go down, especially with a character who already has a strong personality, to begin with. Your ronin has very set thoughts which change very quickly. At the beginning of the story, it's made apparent that they don't easily trust people and have no friends. This is all well and good until they met a few individuals later on. Far more surprisingly, the ronin considers these people to be their friends, after barely knowing them for a day. The ronin suddenly feels the urge to protect them, even if your chosen personality doesn't align with such thoughts. Another problem here is that at this point in the game, the attunement system is very much already in place. If you have been a loner and aloof but now wish to follow the ronin's example and try to be friendly with protective of their new friends, expect a rapid drop in attunement. It's very counter-productive and can even start to feel like a battle between yourself and your character. This isn't something I imagine anyone wants to feel when trying to immerse themselves in a good story. Worst of all, it's not even written in a way that feels like the author is trying to test the player, to see if they really can stay true to themselves no matter the situation. While on the subject of having a character with such a strong personality, it's very unfortunate that they, and not you, get to pick their preferred physical attraction to others. To put it simply, the ronin doesn't like people who carry a few extra pounds, and no, not the British currency but weight. They have very strong thoughts about this which adds a fair bit of fat-shaming to this title. It's as if there are only two types of people in this world; those the ronin finds attractive or "fat" people. To make matters even worse, they don't usually stop with just that insult. Instead, it's usually accompanied by additional negative thoughts that imply overweight people are disgusting and smelly. 99% of the fat-shaming comes from the ronin themselves. It's not the type of character I really want to play as. Overall, after much consideration, I'm unsure that I would recommend Samurai of Hyuga. I know I'm in the minority here; I've seen how many people adore this title. I can understand that people will enjoy this story for the witty and strong ronin fighter that you play as. For me, their personality was just too defined. I never thought I'd say that before now. I'll admit, it was a solid read and enjoyable at times, but I just can't bring myself to overlook (what I believe are) the negatives here. I was unable to get past Chapter 5 or 6, most of the reasons I can't recommend it is personal opinion. Pros: - The actual plot seemed to be ramping up to something interesting - Samurai-times is always a plus and the descriptions for the setting were a plus Cons: - I felt that the storytelling was just too verbose. The constant use of similes for description made the text harder to slog through. - The use of the occasional japanese word instead of the readily available english option (ex: Baka vs Idiot) had me audibly sighing. It ended up forcing me out of the immersion that I think the game was trying to achieve, as if constantly saying "remember we are in japan". good job with describing japan so I didn't need to be reminded with the single japanese words/phrases sprinkled throughout. - This story is told from a strange perspective. The way the writing plays it doesn't feel as though the mc is your avatar, which I think is more typical for Interactive Stories. Instead it feels as though you are a fully realized entity somewhere in the MC's mind (I don't know if this gets explained later or not). By giving the MC a backstory that is unknown to you it is hard to feel as though you are making the best decisions, from a character perspective, in any given situation. This is handled by the MC then explaining to you, the player, how the decision fits his/her line of thinking. The issue is that by having that inner dialogue, almost as if the MC is constantly stopping the story to explain to me what is happening from his/her perspective it starts to feel as though this would have been better as a proper book instead of an Interactive Story.
Samurai of Hyuga is a text-based, choose-your-own-adventure developed and published by Hosted Games. You take on the role of a ronin, a samurai who doesn't serve under a master, and you can customize your gender, sexual preferences, and name. You have been tasked with protecting a member of the royal family who possesses rare magical talent. As the two of you are staying at an inn for the night, chaos ensues. Of course, it eventually get settled, and you and your charge then move along. Your charge informs you that he/she has received a letter from the Emperor himself, and upon meeting him, you discover that the Emperor has an important task for you and your charge. There are demons (yes, that's right) who threaten all of Hyuga, and the Emperor wants the two of you to eliminate all of them. Despite that you don't believe in demons and all that, your charge is eager to take on the task, so you reluctantly follow him/her. I'll end my story synopsis here to avoid spoilers and all that. As for the gameplay, there are numerous choices presented throughout the story, which is normal for a CYOA. The choices you make determine your character's personality, such as whether you're impulsive or you think things through. Regardless of the personality, and later, your attunement, you'll get the same ending, which leaves off on a cliffhanger. There is a bad ending as well, which can be obtained in one of two ways. In addition, there are numerous Steam achievements. Now that I've gone over the story and gameplay, I'll move onto my critique. I enjoy reading a good CYOA occasionally, so I was hoping that I would enjoy Samurai of Hyuga. Right away, I liked that the main character is a ronin, which makes them naturally rebellious. There is a brief backstory as to why this character is the way they are. As I was reading the story, I could kind of tell that the writer was a bit inspired by the anime, Rurouni Kenshin. It is one of my all-time favorite anime, so I didn't mind. There's a vast variety of characters with differing personalities. I'm uncertain if I found any of them to be likable. At best, I'd feel neutral towards them. Personally, I found the MC's charge to be really annoying although because they come from a high status, I guess they feel entitled to behave in a certain manner. As for the story itself, I enjoyed the journey that the MC and their charge would go on. There are a few exciting events that keep things interesting as well as some more slower paced moments. I like how the story (assuming that you don't get the bad ending) leaves off on a cliffhanger although I can understand that some readers might get annoyed by it. It's clearly the writer's intent for readers to get the next installment. As for the writing, I found it pretty well-paced. I noticed a few typos, so it wouldn't hurt to have a proofreader take a look and fix them. As for the choices, I felt that they were good in that the early ones shaped the MC's personality. Then, once the MC is assigned a spirit animal, then attunement comes into play. Basically, attunement determines if the MC makes decisions that follow with their spirit animal. This is important in not getting the bad ending. I didn't have any issues with the stat system, as it helped me to see what kind of personality the MC was leaning towards. If I had to make a criticism, I'd say that there isn't really any romance (despite that you can determine the MC's sexual preference). However, Samurai of Hyuga doesn't seem to be intended as a romance story although this may change in later installments. Other than that, I had no issues with unlocking all of the Steam/in-game achievements, especially with the help of a guide. Overall, would I recommend Samurai of Hyuga? If you enjoy CYOAs and don't mind the lack of visuals or audio, then this is worth taking a look. This story may not be for everyone, though, as it narrates life in fictional Japan in the past and there are some references to oni (magical demons) and magic in general. However, there is a free demo available, so you can check it out first to see if this story is for you. At the asking price, I think it's worth getting, as it took me about 7 hours to get all of the achievements, but you can always wait to get it on a sale. ^^
Flying free and writing reviews solely for The Introverted Gamer.
"Masami and I made a quit exit;"

I gotta say this has a little bit of everything you need in an epic adventure story. You start out as a bodyguard for a small child, who's kinda like your moral compass. Later you're given an important mission, that could have dire consequences for all of Japan. Throughout the adventure you'll learn more about the main character's dark past. You'll have to decide if you want to be a better person, use the darkness to accomplish your mission, or run back into the darkness. Pros: -Good twists. -Collect a group of misfits. -The author's sense of humour blends perfectly with the serious situations you're put in. -Pick your own spirit animal. 5-10 choices depending on your stats. -I became very sympathetic to the ronin I played. There are a lot of moments that really humanized him. Being handed a letter then admitting "I can't read" broke my heart. -It's rewarding to see how much your character has grown throughout the adventure. -Felt a lot longer than 140,000 words. Neutral: -You really have to pay attention. There's times when the game will ask what you said or did in earlier chapters. It's great when you recall these moments, it really shows how your character has grown. But it can be annoying if you rushed through the earlier chapters and don't remember. Cons: -The mechanics. So you don't really have skills, you have 5 personality traits. Your decisions in the earlier chapters will determine your personality. And you're stuck with that, so choose wisely. There's still decisions to make, but fewer of them and their effectiveness will depend on your personality. It's kinda like a guessing game. Does the author think this decision corresponds to this personality trait, etc. A lot of the time you're not given a choice. For example: Your personality is calculated so you will respond to this situation in a calculated way. -There are a few decisions that don't rely on your stats at all, you just pick what you want. Overall: -I really don't like the mechanics, but the story is solid. So solid that's it's worth full price.
