I first got this game back in the late 90s on a 3.5inch floppy disk. If you were not born in the 90s, or know what a 3.5inch floppy disk is. Don't rate this review down. I've seen a few 12 year old not get old games. Don't be one of those. I clocked this game back then, and I'm on my way to doing so again in 2015. This game was and still is pretty sweet for a 2d platformer. You have multiple gameplay elements to work with. Its not just fight to get the key and open the door. Sometimes you have to choose which key/door combination to unlock. You may screw up requiring a reset of the level! Add in the floppy disk/laser grid. Dynamite to open the exit, satelite disk to find and destroy, and sometimes the invisible platforms to change the level layouts! This gives a feeling of progress more than having to walk through a level again. Oh and then there are the varied enemies you will fight. The game only allowing you to fire one shot at a time slows things down some, but means this isn't about button bashing. Its more of a chess game about when to put yourself into harms way and attack. Keep in mind you have a bonus if you survive the level with no damage. There are quite a few enemies that have various strengths and weaknesses. You can't just shoot and win. Some you have to attack only at certain times, and in certain places. Others will blow up and send shrapnel out towards you. The blue ninja guy is one of my favourites. Don't also forget the challenge of spelling S.P.Y. It seems so simple but sometimes avoiding the letters you aren't ready to get can be fun/frustrating. The graphics are nice and colourful, the sound is old school. The only really bad thing is when you finish the levels and realise you are getting closer to the end. 10/10 would spell S.P.Y. again
Oh boy, the feels. Don't let my play count fool you, I played this on end when I was young. Brings back the memories of taking apart and building computers when I was just learning to ride a bike. Controls are still soft and the enemies dumb, just the way I liked them. Great game to dip in and out of when you want to remember a simpler time. Works great on Windows 10.
For those who love nostalgia of the DOS and Windows 95 era game. Apogee, now 3D Realms, released a series of side scrolling platformers. This and Crystal Caves. This game when I was a lad of 10 would play this with my brother. We would take turns on each of the bases and destroy evil. This game is a platform puzzle, not mind boggling difficult puzzles, just stuff like collecting items in a certain order. I am running this on Windows 10 without problem, and my brother also purchased the game, and he is running it on Windows 8.1. Buy this game. This is all I can say.
I have no idea how I finished this game when I was a kid, I keep failing the very first mission over and over again.... damn this new generation games took all my skills with their modern graphics I had the shareware version of this game (AKA DEMO) it had FULL access to Episode 1 that I never thought it was actually a demo because it took me days to play and finish it and I had a lot of fun with the game. but now a days you pay for a $60 game and the file size is something around 50+ GB it gives you access to %10 of content and rest is DLC and Microtransactions, this game costs less than a dollar (if bought in 3D Realm Package) and it gives you full access to all 3 episodes without an extra charge.
It's a great game, but the developer released a remastered version here on Steam that I think adds more value. Get that one instead. Secret Agent HD
Oh sweet nostalgia! I played the game ages ago! Secret Agent did not lose its charm after years. It is a solid and quite demanding platformer with a huge variety of levels. It is a very old game released in 1992 and it has things that many titles released that time lacked: a bit of story, proper savings, and what is very important to me - losing all lives means repeating a level, not losing whole game. The game is not easy, getting into many places need some skills and precision, but it is not hardcore. Our secret agent and enemies move smoothly, so the gameplay is enjoyable. Graphic is decent considering the release time. The biggest con is DosBox. Yes, sadly the developer did not decide to do any improvements and released on Steam exactly same old version with all its old bugs. I remembered Secret Agent had some display problem and used to flicker in some areas. Unfortunately it still occures. I wish Secret Agent received some more love, so far the review should be mixed. The fact that the developer did not make any changes in the game since 1992, the price for the game is too high. Do not get me wrong, I love the game. But paying for the buggy product untouched for almost 30 years is not okay.
Mid 90s platformer in DOSBox. Pros: - The EGA graphics are pretty. - You can use a gamepad within the game itself and it just works without much configuration needed. - Pretty big nostalgia feels for those who played this back in the day. - Unlimited attempts which cover bad level design (see cons). Cons: - The level designs & layout itself is an exercise in frustration. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ like raised doors with locked keys on perfectly flat walls, no platform underneath, and with spikes underneath. The controls are nearly not responsive enough to easily pull that off without a lot of extra attempts/lives. - 'Super Mario' like levels which some more precise jumps are needed but you don't have 'Super Mario'-like controls. Jumps are stiff and you get 4 degrees of movement. - This is one of those games where it's clearly designed around reading a manual. Otherwise, there's lots of stuff going on that isn't explained. - Lots of 'junk items' that's entirely guesswork if it's pickup-able or not without a way to tell. - Lots of little side graphical glitches since the game is made for 4:3 displays (such as geforce experience and steam overlay images getting 'stuck' and glitching out) I wouldn't bother with this one unless you have a nostalgia trip. There's far better platformers out there.
I've only completed the first episode, but so far: PROS: -good puzzle/platform game, even for today's standards, and still quite fun. -nostalgic CONS: -after completing a few levels, the rest of the game (in terms of puzzles and difficulty) doesn't change much -the gameplay holds up, but not so much the graphics, sound or framerate for today's standards 5/10 gameplay (for today's standards) 7/10 gameplay (for 90's standards)
This game was one of the first action platformers I ever played on PC. It was love at first sight and I played the shareware version of this over and over again. Hour after hours. And it felt so hard game to beat. Took me a whole day Now, about 30 years later the game looks, sounds and feels the same as it used to. But now, for me it's not so hard game to beat like it used. (Might have something to do with my age, not confirmed but plausible explanation, not the thousands of hours I've played games hence the late 80's). I'm running it with AMD FX-8350, 16Gb RAM, GeForce GTX-1060 6Gb, with windows 10. I was sure, that this pearl of games wouldn't even launch before I'd wade through pages and forums, then upload and install some emulator, or tweak .ini -files or something like that I hate. But, I was positively surprised that either Steam or this game included dosbox or emulator. (Didn't get the chance to see the emulator or what ever it was whwn launched Secret Agent.) This game works beautifully. No major glitches or bugs I noticed. Audio is the same old, PC-speaker style. There's one big problem with this game. It didn't include any rejuvenating potions, spells or machines etc. This game is at it's best when you're a kid, just starting the summer vacation and you have any worries, Just a big'ol bowl of cereals, some morning cartoons and this game here. If you played this during the 90's or later, and liked this game. I can recommend purchasing this to your games library.
