As a left-handed player, the fact that I have no recourse to change the controls to allow me to use my left hand for menu interactions and stuff is a deal-breaker to playing this. In general it lacks much in the way of accessibility features, which I guess is fine if you as a customer match their vision for what a player looks like, but I'm broadly not a fan of how this game handles interaction/controls. Not sure if it's early access or what, but I'm glad I got it in a Humble Bundle pack, because it'd be an instant refund if I paid full retail for it.
Unfortunately as much as I recalibrated myself and reset my height in Steam, etc. I just couldn't duck low enough to get under anything, I would constantly get stuck. I had to quit put of the game and play something else, happily I got this as part of a bundle but this should really be sorted so I can play it at all.
I love the exercises you can get from this VR game, as well as the variety of environments and interactions it offers. The dynamic weather is absolutely fantastic! It adds a touch of uniqueness to the overall experience, enhancing the VR gameplay in such an immersive way!
Unfortunately I cannot recommend this game in its current state. There are a lot of bugs, some of which surround the fundamentals of the game like walking and dodging. This game has a lot to like, but more to hate. The very firsty thing you're greeted with are three huge billboards that have controls on them and a bunch of text, however the text is completely blurry and literally impossible to read at any distance. The movement style is unique. You have to move your arms/hands in order to run. They don't really teach you this, you have to figure it out on your own. You can walk VERY VERY slowly if you move the joystick. Like, you move so slow that it's angering. The devs should make the basic walking speed a bit faster, because pumping your arms can sometimes make your character launch forward. It becomes very frustrating when you're trying to grab a rope handle to slide down a rope, but instead your character launches forward and you fall off of a cliff. The walking with the joystick should move a little faster than it does to allow the players to properly position themselves. Sometimes when you're running and you try and stop, your character just keeps moving for about 4 to 5 steps. Frustrating. The whole point of this game is it's an obstacle course where you have to climb, slide, and dodge obstacles. You come across some robots that try and shoot you, but it doesn't matter because you can stand there and the bullets go right through you. Why? This completely removes any sense of urgency or strategy. Speaking of urgency, you are running a huge obstacle course where your goal is to finish it as fast as you can. You are timed and a big timer will be displayed in front of you occasionally. While you're trying to complete the course as fast as you can, the devs made it so the old man Venture will pop up and drone on about the story. So if you want to hear about the story, you need to stop and listen, meanwhile the time is still ticking and the clock doesn't stop. What a terrible design choice. There are things to like about this game. The level design is fun, even if the movement style is rage inducing. The environments look nice and the sound effects aren't bad. I do wonder where the priorities for this game were. Every time I saw a seagull purched on a ledge next to me, a deer overlooking a waterfall, or a swarm of fireflies, I was reminded that time was put into those when it should have been spent on polish. I knew I was in for a jank fess when I saw the unreadable tutorial. This game could be great if the things I mentioned in my review are addressed. Unfortunately, I think this game might be abandoned.
Venture's Gauntlet VR is an Early Access VR obstacle course game. It worked on my Index system, looked ok, played ok, sounded ok. Very fun, very challenging. There are some bugs and things needing to be tweaked. Maybe buy this game, if you like exercise and obstacle courses. I got a free key for this from the Steam Curator program. I have to admit I was a little skeptical about how good a workout this would be but I was pleasantly surprised. I definitely worked up a sweat and could feel my arms got a nice feeling of fatigue. I loved the landscape views. They were so spectacular, I got a bit distracted and fell a few times, but it was worth the look. The gauntlet challenges kept it interesting and the time flew by. I hope they add more leg work in the improvements. This will definitely stay in my home workout rotation.
Ultimate Ninja warrior for VR! I felt a surprising amount of pride as I took a zipline down an idyllic mountain side. Prior to that I had just completed the tutorial and first obstacle course in the game. Not only is it a good workout for your arms (Not unlike Ringfit Adventure for Switch), but you and your friends will have a good laugh at each sections failed attempts. (It took me easily over ten tries to get past the swings.) You'll also start feeling like a pro when you can make some risky cliffside jumps to shave a few seconds off your time. I don't easily get immersed into VR games, but those moments had me feeling like Tom Cruise in the MI2 opening. Also the way you run and turn in this game is super intuitive and fun. Thankfully the motion required to run works with big or small movements. Either way, expect to burn some calories and feel like a badass doing it.
Great adventure, great exercise! Controls worked great for me, pretty cool environments to explore as well!
Great game and a good workout! No motion sickness while playing and controls feel intuitive. The rope swing control takes some time to get used to and could use some improvement. I got to section 4 but had to stop. I’ll definitely go back later and I explore all the paths. Loving the landscapes and music too!
I like it
