some 20 years ago I played a game by an unknown Mr. Kojima and immediately i knew yes we will see and here more from him. Today i played a game by an unknown Mr. Johansen and it felt just the same.
I've been playing video games since 1978.In 2013 I fell out of love with video games ! Then in 2016 this New Video game "Gimmick" Known as Virtual reality came along .My first experience was PSVR And I was Instantly transported into dreamland !However I craved More .I built a PC and bought a Rift S and then a Quest 2. In My 5 years of enjoying VR this was the first game that delivered the roomscale experience that was seemingly Abandoned. It will test your mental ability as well as your physical fitness {Remember I'm 50 years old ) This game was utterly brilliant /sometimes frustrating because of difficult sections but extremely rewarding once completed. This game got my fat backside off the the couch literally (Because I had to move it) To create a 2x2 meter space .If you loved The original Tomb raider games but wished you could jump inside them or hoped for a Star Trek Holo deck experience with the clever design of folding a physical space inwards and outwards upon itself .Then this is an absolute Must Buy Game! With a torch in one hand and a whip in the other ducking /sliding and moving my way across some very cleverly designed Puzzles and Deadly Traps I was exhausted and amazed.Hopefully the very small team that has delivered this innovative game can bring out a sequel .One of the best VR games I've ever played !
This is a 100% room scale game with no artificial locomotion or turning. It requires at least a 2m x 2m play space. If you want to feel like Indiana Jones, this is the closest you could ever get. It's awesome and a steal at this price. Here's my video of the free demo, which you can try before buying. You can see me in my play space using a corded Index without issue. https://youtu.be/QEZoRAw23oo
'Eye of the Temple' is a highly entertaining adventures puzzle game for VR with a large expansive open world. You will have to explore this world and reach further locations by figuring out and solving puzzles. These puzzles are related to the environments you are in and so it is very important to remember where you have found potentially unsolved puzzle elements that you will have to revisit later. Early Access Gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5uRoK32WZ4 In terms of movement, Eye of the temple has a unique offer that I have only experienced in a few VR games and that is a complete roomscale based controls, you will have to take certain short routes in the game by stepping into your play area with your legs. There are no controls to move in the game, make sure your playing space meets the 2m x 2m minimum playspace requirement. In the game you will need to use a 'whip' which was useful to indiana jones just like this one and his adventures will have the same use in Eye of the temple, you'll need to use these to reach certain levers or objects that you can't reach by hand and aren't super far away either, also this whip will be useful for fighting the enemy creatures you will encounter. After defeating these creatures or destroying vases or other objects, you will be able to collect rubies that you can trade for another type of crystal later in the game to enter the temple. Eye of the temple is also a good VR example game that you can show to VR virgins because through the way of moving the motion sickness gets rid of the first experiences. Also, the puzzles are not too challenging and the environments in the world are very varied with heights and depths, caves and zones with lava and lots of traps.
The way this game uses roomscale is amazing - games like this are a rarity nowadays. I got so immersed I punched my OLED TV. It survived. 10/10 would punch my TV again
The game looks amazing, runs as smooth as butter, and is heaps of fun. Really makes you feel like an archaelogist explorer who shall not be named. ;-) The most impressive feature though is for me that the motion system is completely revolutionary. You must have a 2m*2m play space for this, but if you do, it feels incredibly natural. And it had to take an indie developer to actually do this, none of the big studios figured it out. Total recommendation, there is just no game in VR that feels this novel and cool as of now.
Summary: Great game with clever design, guiding you through a huge temple and its outside area, very immersive, unique and fun! You really need those required 2x2m playspace. There are a few accessibility options. Might not be the best choice if you're afraid of heights. I started playing with Index, but later switched to Quest + Airlink, worked fine for me. Initial review: I'm not through yet, but I can already say, this game is very immersive, unique and fun! The atmosphere created by the music and sound effects is great. Amazing how well thought through everything is! Not only the great level design which works without any artificial locomotion (be sure you have the required 2x2m playspace, you'll need it!), but also everything about lighting. I love the light & shadows in the outside areas and the torch light inside. Even if you happen to stand in the dark at some point (the torch burns down) you are not lost, you can still see the stones and rollers at least, because they have an illuminated sign on them. There are also some accessibility options, like setting the crouch height or switching torch and whip. Update: After about 1.5 hours of gameplay, I switched from playing on Index to Quest (1) via Airlink, because I figured going wireless would be worth the (for me) worse comfort of wearing the Quest. The game works fine on Quest and it was totally worth it for me. Wireless it's even more amazing! If you have that option, I'd totally recommend trying it. I noticed that if you die in the same spot a few times in a row, you get a puzzle specific, but not detailed piece of advice :D I got 2 or 3 of those and they usually helped me. Not by giving a solution, but making me stop and think again. Is there anything the developer didn't think about? The temple is huge! Every time I thought that's gotta be it, I found yet another new area. The whole game is awesome, I enjoyed it a lot, but my favourite part was the way to the last room. That felt amazing! (sorry, no spoilers here) If you are afraid of heights, this might not be a game for you. Or good practice to get over it.
The absolute best use of roomscale I've ever seen in a VR game. How the developer designed the whole game so that you're only moving around 2x2m square and yet feeling like your're exploring a huge open space is insanely clever and well done. Every aspect of this game is expertly designed. Everything you do in Eye of the Temple is dictated by your physical movement, there are no button/joystick controls here and nor should there be. The game starts a little on the easy/slow side (I assume to get you used to moving around), but the puzzles ramp up at a good pace to a good level of difficulty where I had to stop and take in my surroundings to think for a bit, but never felt stuck. I enjoyed having to intensify my movement for certain areas, with the final boss fight in particular being a very memorable example that really got the adrenaline pumping. One very minor gripe is that the whip felt a bit finicky to begin with, and I felt I had to aim a lot lower than felt normal, but I quickly got used to this and had no trouble through the rest of the game. This is one game that is going to stick with me for a long time as truly utilising VR to it's full potential, and for that reason I'm sure it will remain one of my favourite VR game for a long time. If you have VR and the required space, you have to play this game.
I’ve been playing video games for 30+ years, and finding ALL the secrets in Eye of the Temple was easily the most satisfying moment I’ve ever had in a game! Rune Skovbo Johansen, EOTT is phenomenal! Push out as many games as your genius brain can. Even (especially) the weird ideas. There are NOT enough experiences operating at *this* level of brilliance and innovation. This game turns a boring ‘2m x 2m’ play space into a vast adventure-scape… …A sprawling temple complex you PHYSICALLY hop, duck, dodge, barrel scramble, collect, and fight your way through. • Chaperone boundaries completely disappear. • You lose ALL awareness of 'where you are’ in your living room. • Yet 'somehow', you never hit a wall! It’s PURE SORCERY! I'm COMPLETELY OBSESSED with this game now. Get it. Just Get It!
A very unique experience, although a bit short. A fairly big play area _is_ required, since you'll be moving with your own feet - no teleports, no locomotion. But by the end of it you'll be bravely jumping around your living room completely trusting the game to return you back to the center (just don't step on your pet)
