The first game in the Utawarerumono trilogy of story-rich tactics RPGs. Into a world filled with verdant nature, populated by folk with fluffy ears and fuzzy tails, awakens Hakuowlo, a man of masked mien and missing memory.

Availability
We put this game to every storefront we collect. A market that answered not sold has told us something about the game; a market we never asked has not, and the two are never drawn the same.
Discounts
Every price cut of more than 20% we have observed, in each market that quoted one, with this game's chart position on either side of it. These are episodes, not a model: a sale is one event, and one event cannot tell you what the next one will do.
For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,400 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

Utawarerumono completely wrecks you. It is an unforgettable experience. AND it's fully voiced! First time you get to hear Aruru's noises you instany feel paternal towards her!... Being a hybrid visual novel and SRPG, it spends a lot of time with a likeable and engaging cast,, offering a variety of different combat styles and units to chose from. It might appear as a generic fantasy on surface level, but the game doesn't push its world-building, nor is it annoying about it, it has a distinct cultural texture that makes it stand out. And yeah there is a harem point too so pick your favourite! This is a genuine slow burn. The game follows episodic structure with events meshed in between actual plot, which at times felt very dragging, you might spend hours in vn segments before getting to a brief 10 minute fight that moves the plot. The fights are, to be quite honest, seemingly a formality that really makes it more of a VN rather than a strategy game. The maps are really lacking it, and even on Hard mode there is no challenge. But it doesn't force you to grind too much to speed thru most of the fights, and honestly, final strikes are cool. I highly recommend it, even with slow start, janky combat system, this is one of the most memorable stories i've went through, which might not be a selling point as JRPG's are generally very flexible in terms of that. The music is touching, I watched the anime adaptation back in late 2010s and the vibes are perfect. Will be playing sequels.
I CANNOT BELIEVE HAKUOWLO DID NOT **** ERURU. In remastered version. Truly a generational fumble.
14 on sale1 answered “not sold”0 we did not ask
The 1 “not sold” market is read from the Steam price pass of Aug 22: that day the store answered for this game elsewhere and gave no price there. The 14 priced markets are the same rows as the table above — each the latest price we hold, dated here when it is older than that pass. The 0 marked “not asked” were not put to this store at all — either it has no storefront there or we do not collect it yet, and neither is a statement about the game. A refusal is a refusal on one day; a store can list a title again tomorrow.

*No spoilers* This epilogue turned out to be a psychological horror. There aren't clear ages for characters and some elements in this game are... interesting. As my first JRPG battle simulator I was very pleased. There were 3 or 4 weird moments along the story that I was forced to ignore because I didn't jive with some of the typical Japanese pervy tropes, but the story was told well. The battle mechanics were pretty alright. My only gripe is that while I don't mind taking my time I do mind those long attack animations especially when I'm already in a lengthy battle. While I won't remember any of the named people or tribes in this game I too aspire to slam my keyboard and call it coherent. Solid 6 or 8/10 depending on how you decide to immerse yourself.
Cried my eyes out. 10/10
The troubles born of human greed and ambition transcend the boundaries of time and generations. Many desires are fraught with moral dilemmas capable of precipitating a catastrophe. Can one truly claim to stand on the right side of history while fighting for the greater good, if doing so requires trampling upon the lives of others? The greater good itself may turn out to be merely a projection of one's perfect world hidden behind personal benefits and goals. The aspirations of many become the reason for one, unknowingly being served to justify actions that initially appear trivial but ultimately lead to irreversible consequences. The duality of man will never let one to come up with an agreeable answer. This was a great game! The story turned out to be pretty interesting. Considering the original game was released in 2002 there were some tropes that had since become prevalent enough in the media to make some of the plot twists more predictable though not to an extent where it becomes ever less compelling. I am quite inexperienced in SRPG genre so the battle system was a bit confusing at first but in the end it played out well. Controls, even if not noticeable at start, are pretty simple as well as the levelling and equipment system. The game sadly is marred by the fact that it got self-censored with this release. I haven't played the original one but apparently all R18 scenes got removed here and while you can try to pretend like it does not affect the story significantly I did notice that certain romantic plotlines - specifically relationships with some of the main cast - missed something to be considered concluded or even open-ended. Other than that, I have no complaints with the game. I enjoyed the art style; I find this early 2000s anime style with big eyes and less realistic character design pretty charming. The music arrangement is fitting as well, might as well put the OST on my background playlist. At the review time I still haven't started the other games of the series but I am pretty confident it will keep up the quality. And this one is definitely going to my all-time favorites.
This is a pretty good visual novel with Strategic RPG segments. I really love the world building and the plot, which are really well-crafted. The mystery around the MC is slowly peeled back in a very satisfying way, and the world is really complex and fascinating. The game also has beautiful art and a great OST. I was less enthused with most of the character writing. This very much feels like a VN written in 2002 (which it was) in that respect. The heroines are fairly 2 dimensional and all inexplicably obsessed with the MC, creating an often cringe-worthy harem situation. There are a few exceptions to this (Ulthury and Kuuya act like actual human beings more often), but on the whole the heroines don't really get character arcs. They're just there, being cute, pining after the MC, and kicking ass. That would have been enough to get me to drop many VNs, but the excellent plot kept me reading - as did the knowledge that there are two more games in this series that are significantly more well-regarded.
