Quick and easy romp about a man chasing down his lost love in a carnival game

I'm one of the people who have been following Twisted Tower from the beginning. I remember when Thomas Brush announced that we was working on a game called "Father". I've been loosely following development of this game for a long time since, so keep in mind I have a level of bias to my review although I'll try and keep it objective. -Gameplay- Twisted Tower's gameplay is great for the 4-5 hours you'll need to beat it for the first time. There's a new game plus which seems interesting but I don't feel compelled to complete it yet. Everything remains fresh for the entire experience and new weapons / abilities help fights and locomotion to not get stale. The arena fights are fun whenever all the enemies are in sight, but tedious when you can't find them. I would say in 30% of these fights I struggled to find most of the enemies and when I did it was a cakewalk because they were all alone. However, I feel that combat was very well executed. It was responsive while not taking itself too seriously. All the weapons have a weird gimmick visually, but they aren't distracting or obtuse in gameplay. The movement all feels pretty good. My main complaint would be how snappy the midair dash feels. Your velocity gets explicitly set and stopped which feels odd especially in the air. Other than that I really liked the progression in movement mechanics. I did find the final boss to be way too easy. While the concept was really cool, the execution was lacking. I think the main thing is that I hardly took any damage. I think something that would've made this fight more stimulating would be summoned enemies. While I normally dislike having to fight little enemies during a boss fight, I think it would be a way to make the gimmick with the changing landscape to be more interesting. But ultimately, I understand that the developer knows the game better than anyone and can find a solution that fits the game best. -Visuals- I really liked this game's visual style. It was a great balance between cartoony and realistic which matches the narrative and gameplay very well. The game's art direction never felt confused like you might see in other 3D indie games. Props to Felipe all the models were fantastic. The animations in this game were all pretty fun. Aside from Piper doing what I can only assume is a dance ripped straight from Mixamo (which was hilarious by the way) all the animations feel like they belong in the world. The weapon animations do a good job of conveying the Bioshock energy without being over the top and distracting. My biggest complaint with the visuals / animation would have to be the final cutscenes. My computer is pretty decent, but the pre-boss cutscene was running sub 30fps with limited visual quality. I don't know if this was prerendered or something but it looked suboptimal. Other than that I loved getting immersed in this game. -Sound / Music- There isn't too much I can say about the sound in Twisted Tower other than it being really good. I think the music was beautiful and fitting, the gunshots sounded nice and unrepetitive, and the other sound effects worked like a charm. I'm not the most knowledgeable about audio myself so that's all I'll say. -Story- The story of this game is what makes it special. If I never found those tapes or papers, I don't think I would've finished. I really liked seeing the story unfold in this game. The voice acting and script were really well done. The characters felt real, while having a sort of fairy tale perfection to the interactions *wink wink nudge nudge* I was genuinely excited to stop playing and listen to the characters talk (something that is uncommon in a FPS). I didn't love the ending, but it was interesting. The twist near the end was not incredibly surprising (it reminded me of Neversong), but I thought it was cool. I'm also very interested in the changes to the story over the years. I remember the story being about a guy with a chip on his shoulder trying to prove his worth on TV. Although that story seems interesting, I'm happy with what we got in the final product. Overall this is a solid purchase. Thomas, all those years of work have paid off.

Works great on steam deck. A compelling short story.That i hope gets expanded in possible DLC. This game put me on to Alex Pangman so that was cool. Overall a great game to pickup. Especially since Halloween is around the corner 100% YES!
