Although this is a local multiplayer game there are bots that make up for the lack of numbers. Initially Ainslie (my girlfriend) demonstrated some interest in challenging me. Unfortunately, real life events got in the way of the two of us playing and I held off writing this review. When she continued to be busy I decided to try my luck against the AI. I’m thankful that I did. This review will purely focus on the single-player experience.
Strengths
Variety of vehicle types: There are a total of six. vehicle types. Each plays and performs differently from the other. Each has their own distinct advantages and disadvantages. One of the keys to being successful at the game will be discovering which vehicle you perform best with. Vehicle types include tank, Humvee, APC, artillery and hovercraft. Players also have the choice of choosing at random and having one. A ton of game modes: More game modes have been included in the game than you can poke a stick at. Game modes include: Death match, war spoils, bullet hell, future tech, bombshell, spare parts, tour of duty, arms race, experimental weapon, blitzkrieg and limited resources. Although some play very similarly there are enough differences to provide a broad enough arrangement of game styles to appease most players. Great tutorial system: There is a great tutorial system which can be played through multiple times for each different vehicle type. I highly recommend that you play through with each type. In summary, thanks to a good variety of vehicle types, game modes and a very well designed tutorial system that can be - and should be - replayed Toys of War's strengths make the game a ton of fun.
Weaknesses
Mouse play: The biggest actual weakness in the game is the mouse play. The game has been designed with a controller in mind and with twin stick shooting mechanics at its heart. Therefore, unfortunately, the mouse play is vastly inferior to controller play. Marketing: Unfortunately, when a game has been released for over a week, as of writing, and the game has just the sole review on steam marketing is to blame. In this respect the failure to mark the game as a single-player game is a significant hindrance. I understand that the developers have not wanted to market a game intended for local multiplayer unfairly. However, players such as myself enjoy the single-player options that the game has. Yes, I’m missing fun with friends but I do get joy from the game. Slow loading time at the beginning: The original loading screen took my computer quite some time to process. This is a little disappointing given that there doesn’t appear to be a lot of content loading. However, the menu screens are quite well detailed and polished. Therefore, if this is the reason why then I can and will deal with it.
Is it Steamified?
Toys of War already has a number of Steam achievements for the hunters out there. However, unfortunately, it currently lacks trading cards. The developers know that adding them will spur sales so I hope that they do so.
Verdict
Although, Toys of War, would make for a highly entertaining party game I don’t feel as though I missed out on the experience as a single-player game. Unfortunately, because the game is marked as a local multiplayer game and not as a single-player the game has been ignored by most on Steam. Those who love action games and arena games would find this highly enjoyable. As a single player, I recommend this if you’re looking for an arena shooter and are looking for some solidly designed AI. The great thing about this game is that it will never be dead and you’ll always be able to play it with or without other players around.
A Local Multiplayer Arena Action Game
https://youtu.be/aGNa24P_fnk + The gameplay is a load of fun with friends. Generally, the game is round based and the objective is to get as many kills as you can or to survive as long as possible by destroying other vehicles. After a few rounds the person with the most points wins. + 11 incredibly fun and unique game modes which were all a joy to play. Each mode is completely different and adds unique rulesets, mechanics, or objectives which completely change up the game. My favorite was "Bombshell" where you have to get to a safe point before bombs drop across the field while also trying to bump other cars out. + 6 vehicles to choose from which each have two unique attacks. Each vehicles seems to have its own strengths and weaknesses which makes them all worth while to try out. + Visually the game looks great + Bots, which makes the game far more enjoyable as you are intended to play with 4 players. The bots are also very well programmed and felt very fair while still challenging on Easy difficulty. + A pretty good war themed soundtrack This game is in Early Access so these are subject to change - I would have liked to have some seen some more level environments [Side Note: My friend and I really enjoyed Toys of War for far longer than I expected. Certainly a great party game]
Awesome game! I really recommend this game. I don't know if the levels are generated randomly but I really enjoyed deathmatch mode when the walls are different every time when I play with my super mega power tank !
Simply the most creative and interesting game I have played in years. I used to think Witcher 3 was good. How wrong I was. A new standard of quality has been established with this fine title. If I had friends I would play this even more!!!@#E#@! I would buy two copies if I could.
Toys of War is a fun local party game. You currently can play up to 4 players local couch play or online. This game is also fun in single player as the AI gives a good level of challenge. You can play deathmatch type games everyone against each other or assign teams for 2v2 or 3v1 type games. There is a nice selection of vehicles and each handles differently and has different weapons. I had a few issues with the menu and controls but the developer has been extremely good and addressed everything I have had issues with as best they could very quickly. If you use Xbox One Wireless controllers like I do then you will have to assign your controllers to a player slot each time you start the game. Tip: An easy way to do this is to turn on the "Remap on Launch" option in the settings. Which is something they added that I requested :-) I was surprised by how helpful they have been and by the fact they are still actively working on this game as of August 2019. I suggested a new game mode to make Invisible Tanks that appear only when they fire, and they(the developers) have started working on this mode and should be launching it soon. They also said they may be adding 6 or 8 player support in the future, which would really make this game awesome. Overall Toys of War is a super local party game that is only going to get better over time. I think it is well worth the asking price. If like me you remember and loved the old Atari 2600 game Combat or enjoy games like Bomberman then this game will make you very happy. It's an essential addition to your couch party nights!
https://youtu.be/-u1tpUSbkMY Hilariously fun game! You're sure to get a kick out of stomping or getting stomped by your friends in this unique battle type game! Definitely #worth!
This is a truly phenomena game! I bought this because it had a slight resemblance to “Tanks!” from Wii Play and it lived up to my expectations. It doesn’t have a campaign like that game, but it has loads of different fun game modes. I personally played this solo and thought the bots were pretty good! The only gamemode I disliked playing was "Experimental Weapon", because it felt too one sided. Other than that, the gamemodes are great and there is a variety of playable vehicles. I only had two crashes: Spamming Enter in the menu for a mini-game Using Block in the Tutorial I don’t know why that made it crash Overall, a fantastic game with excellent presentation, gameplay, and music! Would say you might want to get it on a sale, but if you have friends to play with locally or online it’s definitely worth the price!
It's a fun update of the old Atari Combat games, if you can get it to run. I've installed it on four different desktops, though, including three built in the past two years, and the only one that will even open this has an RTX 4070. It doesn't seem like the dev has touched this in years.
