The game brings a fresh new take on the city building/management genre by introducing many RPG features. In Towns you manage a settlement on top of an active dungeon. Instead of playing the hero who delves deep into the dungeon, how about playing the town that houses and caters to the hero's needs?

Do not buy this game. It is long, long dead and abandoned. How it is still being sold, how Steam is still allowing this unfinished, thing, to be sold, is beyond me. Avoid this, and avoid anything that these developers work on in the future. It is one thing to stop developing a product after selling it to people, it is another to then KEEP SELLING IT, knowing that it will never be finished. Absolutely shameful.
I love the game! Making it open Source was the best that could happen to the project.
Towns is a great game, I'm excited to see what the community does with it.
I really imagine what this could have been. This is the kind of city builder I would have loved.
After 13 years of nothing and now the developer comes back to tell everyone the source code is released. No real explanation, no promise to work with whoever want to pick up the stick, just "here ya go, I'm out" For years the developer had the gull to ask 15 bucks for an unfinished product. The only reason so many people came back when the news popped is cause fans kept it alive. This is very much unfinished, and although fun it had so much potential. The fact the developer has the guts to still charge money for this is just appalling.
Many reviews here complain that Towns should have been early access, but this chronology of what really happened explains why it wasn't: [olist] [*]Towns was released on Steam. [*]Steam added the concept of "Early Access". [*]Development of Towns was abandoned. [/olist] And there you have it. Towns was never early access, because early access didn't exist when it was released on Steam. And you can't go from "not early access" to "early access" - that's backwards. But is it fun? Well I've certainly had a lot of fun playing it, both before and after the Steam release. Some modding was needed to get it into a playable state, but nothing that couldn't be done without the recent source code release. And with the source code release, it might even be time to move it out of the "Abandoned" category in my library ...
I got this game several days after release in November 2012. Bought it because back then watching Sips was actually still enjoyable, because he wasn't sucking woke cockadoodle. I also really like Gymnopedies, so no problem there. Unfortunately, the developers soon decided to run with the million they got out of the sales of an unfinished game, tried to blame the consumer for their alleged mental health problems and still left the unfinished game up in the store for another whopping 14+ years, in case some nostalgia sick poor soul or some incorrigible hopeless dreamer came along buying unfinished slop for 15 Eurones. Now after all those years, they decided to let other people finish their work without payment and released source code. They are not going to update the game in any way or form though, so players who might want to get their finished game after some 20 years or so can probably look all over the internet to scramble for different mods or something. And they are STILL selling the original unfinished mess for 5 Euros. The absolute insolence is off the charts. Steam should put more ressources into punishing scammers on their platform instead of banning people in discussion forums for "hurty words".
There are a lot of people in the reviews with very strong opinions. I definitely got my money's worth out of this game when it first came out. People need to view Early Access games the same as a lottery ticket. Most of them aren't going to be what you want. I also don't understand the vitriol over steam continuing to sell an unfinished game. Buyer beware. I'm sure there are people that bought it after development stopped that had fun playing it. Why would you deny them that? If the amount you are spending on a game is not trivial, do some research before you click buy. If the amount you spend IS trivial, why are you bellyaching so hard? I don't go to McDonald's and expect a filet mignon. I think the release of the source code is a good outcome, and I think the new price is extremely generous. I do not regret my purchase, or the price I originally paid.
Its been a many years since I played this game. Its an adorable colony-sim thats a little rough on the edges yet impressively detailed compared to similar indie games. The Developer recently released the source code which I want to share my appreciation for. I think thats a great way to revitalize an old game and allow others to contribute and learn from it. For a 5€ game, I dont think the game deserve its negative score. There's plenty of fun to be had.
It is abandoned in an unfinished state, do not buy it.
