Pointless remake. The things that could have been improved are ignored, and the things that are 'improved' are somehow made worse. The graphics look like a cartoon filter or some kind of whiteboard program you would have seen in school. The UI was fine before. Why would I want to see my spies every time I click on a city? I'm there to build and recruit, not check on the counterspy I put there 50 turns ago. He's doing fine. He knows his way around the place. For some reason, a horse that was standing still moments ago has the force of a jet fighter once it has moved forwards by one meter, literally sending people into the air, and they can even jump over the pikes into the middle of a phalanx and break apart the whole thing, because apparently a middle-class Greek soldier was never taught how to turn around. Pathfinding is abysmal, though this may have been part of the original. Something as simple as going through a gate apparently causes a unit so much trouble, requiring them to walk ten metres ahead and then run back to the point you actually told them to walk to. It just doesn't capture what we felt with the original. So much opportunity wasted. Though, really, I suppose it's my fault for using a key. And yes I did write this after an enemy general sent an entire unit of Hastati flying
Awful , worse than the original!! which was great. its just a cash in without fixing problems typical of creative assembly under sega sadly.
If you played total war: rome then this is just that, but with better graphics. I put hundreds of hours into it as a kid, it has at this point become its own genre. For whatever reason it keeps getting crappier with every CA release, so its best to stick with the classics.
Overall a fun experience, the remaster mostly offered improvements without seriously detracting from what the original offered. There was a pretty serious crash-to-desktop problem on the strategic map, always stemming from interacting with the agents menu. I might have had about one per 25-50 hours of gameplay, so not the end of the world, but still pretty annoying. The game occasionally stuttered and lagged during combat, mostly in rainy/snowy battles. Didn't happen often but totally ruined the experience when it did.
Buggy, but still one of my all time favorite games. The remastered graphics are nice, and this version avoids the errors that occur with the original game (crashes due to poor compatibility with modern PC specs). This is my third time buying this game, and I will always recommend it.
I have lots of nice memories from Rome: Total War. I spent hundreds of hours playing it as a child and loved it to no end. Since the remaster was on deep sale, and despite the mixed reviews, I thought I’d purchase it because it couldn’t be worse than the original, right? That game is 22 years old! Even if they had just tweaked the visuals a bit and added some minor quality-of-life improvements, I would have been totally happy with that. However, that’s not the case! I don’t mind the worse UI and the ugly look, (why does it look so bad anw?!), but I just can’t stand how buggy and poorly functional this game is. I just want to play a simple Alexander the Great campaign, and it crashes constantly.
How is it possible this takes up almost twice the space that Rome 2 does and still has its original graphics with a few visual upgrades... I thoroughly enjoyed the original, had hundreds of hours of gameplay in it and I don't even mind the older graphics. But for it to be this process-power consuming and it hasn't even got it's pathing problems fixed, I really can't say I recommend this game. I tried a few siege battles in the early game and I can't fathom what it is like in massive battles. It's glitchy, units get stuck all the time, infantry won't use their ranged weapons... All in all I had a short and disappointing journey on this remake. I thought the remake would improve the units cards and overall GUI visibility... but as many here stated, the GUI is just... terrible. Visibility is bad, I don't know what I have selected, it is hard to see whether units are fighting, running, using missiles... Everything is just downgraded from the original. Same with the map GUI, where everything was neat and easily accessible, it is now hidden inside sub-menus and such. I don't think a lot of thought process was put into the GUI since the most used actions on the map need to be searched for inside sub-menus... It really drops the overall experience... A shame really... I would probably recommend going for Rome 2 instead, since it is a much smoother running game...
