bought this game years ago on disk, they have recently update the eula to say no ownership and they can remove when they want. scummy
Even in 2026, Total War: Shogun 2 remains a masterpiece. The atmosphere, soundtrack, and gameplay are timeless. Few strategy games have aged this well.
The quintessential Total War game where if you actively hate the main campaign, then the Total War series isn't for you. Honestly the best beginner Total War for newcomers as well because it is Total War at its most basic. Easy to learn but highly replayable due to subtle differences in starting tactical situation and leveraging small bonuses to get large tactical and strategic victories. Battles are boiled down to the essentials of the series and thus getting good in this game translate to all past and future titles. Moreover the battles and campaign can be quite complex if the player really wants to delve in depth with the otherwise simplistic mechanics and optimization of the game. The art, graphics and sounds really makes you feel that you are a warlord in Feudal Japan planning your eventual take over of the country. Special attention to the announcer in the battles who really captures the feeling of battles. Easy Recommend.

Arguably the best total war in the series (I haven't played any other total war game). Runs on a potato, too.
Perhaps the last good Total war game. Runs well enough and graphics are alright. Fewer units in comparison to many of the other games, but every unit feels like they can be used to great effect. An example being: Yari ashigaru having a diffrent usecase to Yari Samurai, and not just a stat increase with a reskin. Can't say the same for the likes of the Warhammer games.... Overal great game with good internal balancing. Often on sale for a good price, and a good starting point into Total War.

Like all Total War games, It would be fun if the devs fixed the issues. Quite easy issues to fix, but they wont. It makes you wonder who does design @ CA. Do they hate videogames? Do they hate fun? What compels them to make such engaging mechanics and an otherwise great game but then throw in little fun-breaking rules here and there under the hood? The world wonders. If you buy this game, do not think for a second the singleplayer campaign is you competing with 20 other factions. It is not. It is you competing with a single AI that is utilizing 20 other factions to screw you over. That's even before you learn what Realm Divide is, atleast at the point the game is fully transparent about it. Mind you the designers made a conscious choice to do this. People will argue "bah the game would be too easy if it didnt have brain-dead AI that betrays you and has stat multipliers!". To which I say; SC2 doesnt need that excuse. AoE2 doesnt need that excuse. CA just doesn't bother making good or immersive AI.
I rate this game a Yari Ashigaru/10. If you disagree with my opinion, i will assasinate your son and heir, and then your entire line of succession. I will eradicate your armies and leave only you and your bodyguard alive. I shall then make you a vassal and keep assasinating everyone but you, so that you will die a lonely puppet daimyo of a powerless buffer state soon to be eradicated.
