Ive played exactly one playthrough as Russia, but Ive also logged 850 hours on Total War Empire so here's what you need to know #1 = European Focus... In TW:Empire if you considered the Atlantic colonies a pain in the *** and you always got annoyed at the Martha Confederacy coming in and screwing with your late game, that is not an issue anymore. Map spans from Portugal to Moscow, Sicily to Sweden. You dont even have to deal with North Africa anymore, all the regions that were in TW:Empire outside of Europe are now just trade routes you can choose to invest in or ignore. There's also a few more regions that have been added to the European map in France, Italy, England, Spain, etc, which makes completing a grand campaign still have weight to it like TW:Empire #2 = Pacing Changes... TW:Empire I believe had turns last about once every 4 months to follow seasonal changes (Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer). TW:Napoleon on the other hand has a shorter time frame where turns last about 2-3 months... Because of that, and this is where the biggest downside of the game kicks in, IT TAKES MUCH LONGER BUILDING SHIPS AND UPGRADING SETTLEMENTS IN THIS GAME THAN TW:EMPIRE. High end ships and important buildings can easily take 8-10 turns to complete, whereas TW:Empire's was closer to 6. This can GREATLY impact navy lovers since it takes much longer to put together fleets and also unlock end-game units that require upgraded buildings to research. #3 = Streamlined... You don't have to deal with religion in TW:Napoleon the way you had to with TW:Empire. No missionaries running around anymore, the AI does not become obsessed with building churches at every spot of land, Im not sure if there is a happiness penalty with conquering cities if you are a different religion anymore, but if there is I failed to notice it in my playthrough, so if you didnt like the religion stuff in TW:Empire and thought it was a hinderance, good news, you dont have to deal with that anymore. Same with pirate fleets spawning and wrecking trade routes in TW:Empire, they are not present or anything you have to deal with in TW:Napoleon. #4 = Building Swapping... A very pleasant surprise I had in my playthrough is the ability of switch buildings from one type to another. In TW:Empire if you build a college in a land spot and want to replace it with a workshop, you would have to tear down the whole building and build the new building from scratch. In TW:Napoleon you can now convert a building from one type to another (5-8 turns) rather than tear down and build up from scratch, which is a HUGE deal when it comes to ports. Trade ports or military ports was constantly a decision I struggled with when playing TW:Empire, but TW:Napoleon makes me have to sweat about it far less than in the past. This applied to almost all buildings in the game in both towns and cities too which is just (chef's kiss) #5 = Late Game Performance... The main thing that finally killed TW:Empire for me was how in the late game you could run into some game-crashing bugs that kicks you off of the game, and no number of reloading autosaves or playing things differently can get around the crashing. (I have changed my computer in between TW:Empire and TW:Napoleon which may also have something to do with that in fairness). That being said in TW:Napoleon my first campaign plowed through 300 turns and I didn't have any slowdown or computer overheating or any technical issue start rearing its head. Overall, if TW:Empire has been giving you headaches or throwing problems at you that turns you off from playing it, but still really love the time period in history within the game, TW:Napoleon can be the perfect remedy to help you scratch that itch the way TW:Empire almost does.
I'm better at this than Iux.
