A Beautiful, Dreamlike World with Very Rough Edges

😊 The Positives

Nice Art Style: The game world and its soft colors look very beautiful from a distance. It has a great artistic feeling.
Beautiful Music: The musical score is beautiful, relaxing, and catches the game's mood perfectly.
Intriguing Lore: The story about rebirth is very charming and beautiful, even if it is a bit confusing to understand.
Easy 100% Achievements: Getting all achievements is very easy. You can keep a guide open to get the missable achievements in just one playthrough. If you miss anything, you can just use the chapter select after you finish the game.

☹️ The Negatives

Annoying Camera: The camera angles move around at random. It actively fights your movement and messes up your direction.
Clunky Controls: Character movement and jumping feel floaty and unresponsive. Using a keyboard is terrible, so a gamepad is highly recommended to play this.
Weak Combat: Swinging the sword feels very slow. It lacks any satisfying impact or weight.
Boring Mechanics: The mechanics are too repetitive. You just hide behind rocks to wait for the wind to pass or to avoid the main enemy's attacks.
Lack of Polish: If you look closely, the textures are highly inconsistent, animations are stiff, and models clip right through the walls.
Too Short: The main story wraps up in roughly 2 hours, which makes the baseline price tag hard to justify.

Final Thoughts
Toren is an admirable indie effort that shines in art and music, but completely stumbles when it comes to standard gameplay mechanics. If you want a slow, artsy game with a beautiful, lonely atmosphere and can tolerate frustrating controls, grab it on a deep discount. Otherwise, it is a safe skip. My Verdict: 4.5/10
i have played this game, its not bad, i like the story, the graphics, and everything in it. but like most others have said, the controls and the camera are clunky. if you can get past that, and the 2-2/30 hours that it will take for you to beat it. its worth a play through. check it out.
Short and sweet, stunningly beautiful. This is what you want to get into, if you are looking for a short artsy snack for your lazy Sunday afternoons. Also, don't worry about the achievements, they do work - they just won't be in the way of your game experience (which was a nice touch as far as immersion goes) - they will pop up as soon as you close the game.
Interesting little game for people who appreciate artistic games. The mechanics aren't the best, nor are the controls, and the graphics have dated a bit, but I still enjoyed myself for the 2ish hours of gameplay
📖The story is...really hard to explain, and also delivered in often-random snippets. (Something about a soldier, mage, dragon, tower...Uhhh, no idea.) 🎥The camera is not full free-rotate, but rather fixed-zone-ish. 🎮The controls are forgiving in some areas (salt shapes) but broken in others (jumping and "combat"). 🐲Sometimes the dragon would seem close enough to hit and then I'd whiff with the sword, sometimes I'd actually hit it, sometimes it would just eat me. There's no clear indicator on what is too close/far. 🗣️The trailer is in English, but the game dialogue...isn't(?). 📜The interface and menus need some tweaking. 📃The Chapter Select screen has NO Chapter numbers/names. 🤷♂️This game is almost 10 years old, and the website for the developers is long-gone, so I doubt there will ever be any patches for this game. Shame, bc I feel with just a handful of tweaks and fixes here and there, this would've been a great (albeit short and confusing) game. ❔Similar to Effie: what TF is up with foreign games that are developed for contests or gov't scholarships that get released on Steam, but never get any updates and their developers just vanish?
