I keep thinking about this game and how much I want to complete it, and I'm surprised to realize how much the story actually mattered to my care of this game. Does the story need to be good? Not at all, but this? This is extremely tedious and pulled me out of the game way too much. Others have complained about constant dialogue popups and I agree, it is THAT bad, but I have a bigger issue with the entire story's presentation and writing competency. It's just... incredibly childish... and suuuuper wordy... and some of the storylines are... not good, I'll say, made me uncomfortable, to say the least. Hey Chucklefish/Robotality, why did you feel the need to include a multi-stage sub-plot about a 4-6(?) year old child having a s*xual awakening mid-war-campaign? He's a toddler, this wasn't just slightly weird, it was extremely awkward to have to play through. Gameplay is as good as the first, although I ran in to a few more "annoying/stupid" stages, which probably comes down to preference. If you're able to skip the story beats and just play the campaign missions, then this is a big win. For me, and I was surprised by this, I had very little drive to push forward on the missions when the writing was so consistently awful. The roguelike mode is really really bad but the campaign gameplay is good, I heard ppl complaining about no puzzle mode and I agree that is sad, but it's been years since I touched the game and I don't know, maybe they added a puzzle mode later. As much as I hate the absolutely atrocious, almost insulting, writing, I gotta say that I love these devs for how much they're willing to dedicate to their game (just check patch history, it's beautiful, love you devs but you gotta reign in whoever does the writing.) Actually, this will be obnoxious coming from a random fan but oh well, I'm a huge fan. Regarding the writing... I think they focused too much on trying to sneak in a lot of "subtle" messages but it was just weird and sometimes legitimately confusing. They wanted to push a lot of messages, which isn't a bad thing, but they were too excited and focused. Their excitement to spread messages severely damaged any hopes for this game to have a well written story. Focus on the game world, not the real world, please. Only AFTER you do that can you try to spread messages in a meaningful way.
I will thumb this game up at some point because the gameplay is a blast and this is a best modern Advance Wars type of game. Totally worth the money, a great little game. Buuuuut I want the devs to know, that the endless dialog pop ups are such a drag it made me give a thumbs down for some time. EDIT: Oooook it is even worse. If you want to do an animated movie - do a movie. There are literally levels that are ONLY dialogs between characters. No kidding, one level was just some talk (you need to talk with different characters) and then it is over.
Un-skippable Dialogue; The Game.
The story in the first game was good, this one was not good. The story conflicted with the first game. They upped the price of warships, which was one of the only big differences. Just buy the first if you want a good strategy game with a minor story.
Don't listen to the people saying the campaign is poorly written. It's a fun and well written story, much better than the writing in certain other games in this genre out on steam. I personally suggest using custom difficulty to set the undo's to the maximum amount allowed, so you can test things out and aren't constantly locked into a missclick or a misunderstanding of what a unit would do. Overall, worth your time if you want to play a game in this genre with a solid, fun campaign that'll entertain you for a good 20+ hours if you don't rush it. I don't care about multiplayer so not much to say about that. There's a roguelike game mode which should keep you going for a bit longer after you've finished the campaign.
Im here for the 'advanced wars-like' combat. Dont know why I have to click through hours of storyline, sorry could 100% care less. Im here for the tactics, its a calming, chess-like pastime for me. Also, is it me or are the graphics actually worse than the first game? So ya, for those two reasons thumbs down.
I really enjoyed the first game, but this one is a great disappointment. Simply put: This game is woke. And not in the "it has black characters" sort of way, as the store pages show. I don't mind diverse characters. However, it is woke in a different sort of way that, if I were to put in this review, it might be removed. It isn't an "in your face" like certain other games, it is subtle on it's wokeness, but it's present as early as the rat campaign. I wish I could go into more details, but I'd rather this review stay up.
The game itself is very fun. I was pretty hesitant before buying it, but I really wanted an Advance Wars–type game. I haven’t played the first one yet, but I might grab it when it’s on sale. One thing that almost made me skip this game was the huge number of thumbs-down reviews, but after looking closely, most of those people seem to be mad about the dialogue. So here are a couple of clarifications: Yes, the game involves a lot of dialogue. It happens in two ways: At the start of a level — you get some context, lore, or a heads-up about where the story is going (the story isn’t bad at all most of the time). Between rounds — you completed an objective that advances the story, but you’re still on the same level? Here’s a dialogue! Oh, you just killed an insignificant unit? Well, here’s a random “AUUUGH~” line, even though you’ve killed plenty before with no reaction. Yes, it’s annoying, and I can’t see myself playing this in one long sitting — nor do I think anyone should. You can left-click to advance each dialogue pop-up, and you can right-click to skip cutscene-style dialogue. There’s a lot of it, and I really wish there were an option in the settings to turn it off. But many reviews make it sound like the game is unplayable or like you’re in a hostage situation… which would only be true if you couldn’t left-click your way out. I had my fair share of fun with this one and would 100% recommend it to anyone who enjoys this genre.
Sure, Wargroove 1 has more singleplayer content and have better music, but I personally enjoy Wargroove 2 better, even the music, the story is really good under the surface and leaves a quite bit open for personal interpretation, that aside, Wargroove 2's story is the pain and coping with loss and it's told in a way I never seen before, or at least the more memorable story on lossing your home, friends or even family. But there's the glaring issue, that the text boxes cannot be skipped and it gets pretty annoying having to restart the map or reload a checkpoint before unskippable dialogue gets in the way, but at the very least, you are free to drop the difficulty or even adjust it to your taste, I low key reccomend this as the maps tends to be fairly lenthy despite being every campaigns are shorter compaired to the first game The gameplay once again, is the best part and very community driven, great PvP Maps, challenging PvE maps, Co-op missions, custom campaigns, mods and the Archipelago Mod by Flysniper is something I find myself playing every now and then. (Also the subtle detail if you play with animations on, the attacks are snappier not very notictable but I like it.) Don't let everyone's opinion drive your away from playing this, if you enjoyed the first game then this could suprise you.
