Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft

(NEEDS OG MODE FPS UNLOCK!) I've been a fan of the games since I was a kid in the 90s. This brings a whole new spin on things while holding up to the original feel of the game. The challenge mode is also pretty new and fun to play around with.

Have I finished the three games? No. Do I feel confident that I can comment on the remaster? Yes. So, I will do so. This is just ok. Now, before you accuse me of being a buffoon and not knowing what I'm talking about and everything, let me explain. I fully understand just how important the original Tomb Raider games are to the gaming scene of the 1990s and 2000s. However, importance does equate to aging well in the year of 2026. I really, really want to like these games. I grew up on the Uncharted games on the PlayStation 3 and 4 and loved them, and I've always heard about Tomb Raider and how it inspired Nathan Drake and his story. I think Lara Croft is a neat character just like Nathan, and her impact in a gaming scene where female protagonists were nonexistent cannot be understated. However, the games have just been such a slog to get through. The games are [i] long [/i]. Usually I don't mind a longer game, but these just drag. I have 26.6 hours in the game and I still have a few missions left in Tomb Raider II. Speaking of which, that sequel has just felt like more of the same of Tomb Raider I. I can hardly tell the difference between the two. Similarity is fine, but these two just feel identical. The most notable part about TRII is that there is more combat---which was the worst part about the first. The controls don't help that, which are arguably the worst aged part of the games. I know the remaster added a modern control scheme, but that too just felt weird to me. Speaking of the remaster, Aspyr's job at "remastering" this game is potentially my least favorite part of this collection. It just feels so bare-bones and lazy. They just slapped some slightly better textures on, changed some models, added better lighting, and that's about it. It is as simple as a remaster can get. Did it do its job? Yes, but I couldn't help but feel a bit disappointed at the same time. I've played through almost all of the first two games so far with the original graphics because most of the time the remastered HD textures just look weird in these old blocky, almost Roblox-like, environments. However, they have the original graphics locked at 30 fps, which is incredibly annoying. I'm not sure if there's a reason for this or if they were just completely lazy. Also, the most recent challenge mode update is just incredibly stupid, and some people suspect they used AI to generate textures, which wouldn't even surprise me with how terrible Aspyr is. Anyways, long story short, I don't even necessarily think these are terrible games. I'm planning to play the third game eventually despite how frustrated I've been so far. It's just that there is so much of a legacy that these games are riding off of that playing them in 2026 has let me down pretty significantly. Keep in mind I wasn't around for these games when they originally released so I don't have the nostalgia factor which is also keeping them from being better for me. Overall, I'd unfortunately say I can't recommend these games today, though I really wanted to, especially this specific remastered collection. Maybe if you do have the nostalgia for it you could try it and have a better time than I have so far, but I'm not sure. For other people, I could only really recommend trying out the first one because of its importance to 3D gaming, but I don't see much of a need to play the rest or even the first for that matter. This is one of those titles where I would just give it a neutral rating if Steam had a such a thing. [b] 5/10 [/b]
