Tomb Raider IV-V-VI Remastered is one of those collections that has a bit of a mixed bag. You have a great game, an "okay" game, and lastly, one of the "worst" ones. Even than, i still think its worth playing all three, searching all nook and cranny, and completing all the puzzles in this collection, or if you are autistic about achievements like i am, and do all those. Tomb Raider IV: The Last Revelation - The Crown Jewel of the Collection If there's one game here that justifies buying this remaster, it's The Last Revelation. The entire adventure takes place in Egypt, and the game wastes no time throwing Lara into massive tombs, ancient ruins, deadly traps, and puzzles that occasionally made me wonder if the developers secretly hated me. The remaster does a fantastic job updating the visuals while keeping the atmosphere intact. Egypt looks beautiful, but it still feels lonely, mysterious, and dangerous. Several times I found myself stopping just to admire the scenery before immediately getting flattened, arrow, torched, you name it, As a huge Tomb Raider fan, I feel right at home with both the modern, and tank controls. The tank controls remain intact, which for me is a positive. Lara goes exactly where I tell her to go. If I accidentally launch her into a pit, that's a skill issue on my part. The modern controls remove that slow-tank like feeling and changes the button mapping making it a little more easier for some, if they can't get use to the old controls. (i will mostly talk about the games core mechanics in the first review, as a lot of the time, they usually play the same way.) That said, this game absolutely has moments where you'll spend twenty minutes searching for a switch only to discover it was hidden in the one corner you forgot to check. There were times I felt less like an archaeologist and more like someone looking for their car keys, as at times, things tend to blend together just a bit, and finding all the items, health packs, secrets and more, can be a bit difficult... but if you take your time and enjoy the game for what it is, you are playing one of the best Tomb Raider games from the original series. (Sorry Tomb Raider 1 & 2 purists) Lara is confident, capable, and doesn't need a team of side characters explaining every puzzle she encounters or helping her on her adventures like a side kick...(for now). It's just her against thousands of years of ancient history and somehow the ancient history is losing. This one is truly the best of the collection, and the one i highly suggest playing! Tomb Raider V: Chronicles - The Forgotten Middle Child Chronicles has always lived in the shadow of its predecessor, and honestly? for good reasons. As the name implies, Chronicles isn't a "one large adventure," The game actually tells several stories from Lara's past, It almost feels like sitting around a campfire listening to people share stories about the wild things Lara did before becoming a legend. while its a nice change a of pace, its still a weird way to go from something they had done for four games to, whatever story decisions they decided to do here. A few chapters feel like prototypes for games that never happened. Just when I started getting invested in a particular scenario, the game would move on to the next one. It occasionally feels less like one adventure and more like a collection of "Hey, remember this?" moments, and there is a reason for this. Chronicles was apparently a rushed game, and it really shows with how unpolished it was. Core gameplay is the same, so there is no difference there, but playing it you know something feels a little off. Chronicles isn't the best classic Tomb Raider game, but it's definitely better than this next one... Tomb Raider VI: The Angel of Darkness - The Black Sheep TAoD (as I'll be abbreviating it) has a bit of a reputation.. and unfortunately, most of that reputation is pretty well deserved. The frustrating part is that beneath all of its problems, it is a genuinely interesting Tomb Raider game trying desperately to break free. It tries to implement a sort of "RPG" element if you will. Doing specific things around the environments and levels, will cause Lara to level up stat, while interesting, felt something that wasn't really needed to begin with. While it was something new, it really didn't stick the landing. While i do enjoy the more "mature" setting of the story, this was not it. Instead of raiding and exploring tombs, you actually find yourself caught in a murder mystery filled with conspiracies, secret societies, and a bunch of mambo jumbo, Not only do you play as Lara, but you also play as a new character; Kurtis Trent. Kurtis is a psychic demon-hunter and the last surviving member of a secret order of warrior monks kno- What? that sounds stupid? yeah, cause it is... Now i know I've already talked a lot about the controls of the Tomb Raider games, but i want to take a second to say something about this game, and its controls. This game was probably the only game where i went from tank controls to modern controls instead. While the remaster helped improve the game a little, like a better response time then the original, the game is RIDDLED with, glitches, bugs, and things that can cause your 100% completion to crumble right before your very eyes.. This game is a hot mess, and even though I'm hating on it, its still one of those games you have to experience for yourself. (I will add that the remastered version did add some of the cut stuff into the game that was originally not there on the original TAoD's release and for that, i give them mad props, but it still feels like a unfinished and rush mess. Maybe you can't fix a turd of a game, but you can definitely give it a bit of a spit shine.) I want to thank @CHRSuperstar for making a playlist of all three games achieving 100% completion, as if it wasn't for them, i probably would be scratching my head on some of the stupid achievements this game has.
Tomb Raider IV • [4/5]
Leave me alone, I'm busy ! Let's start with the original games, then we'll talk about the remaster. These second trilogy covers 4, 5 and 6. TR4 is probably the best one in the pack, and it's for the most part, a step up from the previous entries. The tutorial moved to Angkor Wat as a teenage Lara while the rest of the game moves to Egypt. There's a good plot with Lara's mentor Von Croy and it feels more personal. Lara has a lot of new movements and for the first time characters will move their lips on cutscenes. The atmosphere is fantastic, the first levels where a guide leads you through tombs and traps is just amazing, very reminiscent of similar scenes in Raiders of the Lost Ark. One of the new movements, unfortunately, is a chore. The dreaded rope swinging. The game features a unique level with a train in movement, that was already done in games like Blood, but it was a fresh surprise here. Gimmicky enemies like spirits that need you to find cross to destroy them is also refreshing. On the bad side, the game features multilevel areas where you can go back and forth between different maps, making the game much more complex than previous entries, particularly with the second part of the game where you have a network of 6 levels where you have to do ton of not clearly hinted fetch quests, including upgrading your motorbike with items that are well hidden. It's a shame, because the first half of the game is brilliant, the last part, not so much. TR5 is when the dev team just gave up on the saga and Lara. It's not a bad game, but using the same engine with almost no changes after yearly releases made an unbalanced set of random levels. Chronicles is basically 4 mini campaigns told by Lara's friends in a flashback manner after the events of The Last Revelation. As such, there's not really a cohesive plot but just memories. Also with only 13 levels, this is the shortest TR. The game starts in Rome against Larson and Pierre from the first game, it's classic Tomb Raider gameplay with vibes from TR2. Next is Russia with Lara has to get into a military base and then a submarine, the atmosphere is quite good in these levels. Then you play as teenage Lara, with no weapons, in a gothic horror forest in Ireland. It's a fresh change but gets frustrating with the obscure puzzles and unclear directions. Last section ties back to The Last Revelation, with Lara infiltrating Von Croy's offices with a sidekick who gives you intel remotely. It's obviously inspired by games like Metal Gear Solid or Syphon Filter, which were the next big thing back then. TR6, is the black sheep of the saga. One important character of Lara's past is murdered and the police suspects her. The game features Paris and Prague, and for the most part, you will be in city streets, sewers, a bar and even the Louvre museum. There are many odd mechanics in this title, like stealing objects to pawn them and get euros to buy equipment, or how you need to push random objects or making specific jumps to make Lara stronger or make her jump further. Even Lara's dash is locked behind one of these tasks and you get it around half the game. The other main issue is the controls. They somehow managed to make everything more finicky, jumps sometimes don't connect and enemies will take a random amount of shots to go down. You also play as Kurtis during the second half, a guy who has some magic like abilities. It could have been fun but he is even clunkier. There's also dialogues with NPCs where you can choose what to say, similar to a point and click adventure. It just doesn't work and it drags a lot. It's not interesting to see Lara going around Paris, speaking with random people on the streets to get more info about what's going on. Talking about expansions, there's only The Times Exclusive for TR4, which is just 2 short levels with generic gameplay, nothing special. There's no expansions for TR5 nor TR6. About the remasters. As usual it revamps all visuals and audio. Particularly TR4 and TR5, they look beautiful. They added ton of 3d details without really affecting the mechanics nor physics, you are still moving around with square blocks or 45 degrees diagonals, but there are indentantions, broken walls, plants growing on roofs, etc. They should do this to the first trilogy. Regarding TR6, the character models look nice but they didn't really improve the textures. At times, it's unclear if you are playing with the old graphics or the new ones, the changes are everywhere but are subtle. They fixed bugs and made the game as playable as possible without really changing the core. It's still the worst Tomb Raider, but it's not a bad game at all. The NG+ just adds an extra challenge with limited saves, but it wasn't hard to finish it like the previous ones. As usual, the high number of achievements are quite interesting and there's a challenge for everyone. This time there's no speedruns nor bugged ones, so a great improvement. The big issue here, is the lack of the level editor that was included in the original TR Chronicles release. It's unclear why the devs left it out, since it's the only big thing from the Core classic era still missing from the remasters. This is a definitely the best way to play these ancient games now. Totally recommended.
IV - takova klasika, kde Lara objevi ztracenou hrobku boha Setha, ktereho omylem osvobodi a musi projit dalsi chramy a pyramidy, aby byl znovu uveznen. Lokace: IV - Cambodia, dale Egypt - Udoli kralu, Karnak, Luxor, Alexandrie, Kahira, Giza V - Italie, Severni more (ponorka), Irsko, USA VI - Pariz (Louvre, ctvrti Parize, kostely a muzea) a Praha (Strahov, laboratore, tunely, zakladny) Paradoxne nejvic me bavil zacatek (klasika Egypt) a na zaver ten sesty dil neni nic moc.
100% achievements done. A brief conclusion here: TR4 is the longest, also my favorite. Giza area is strange, cleary the devs were rushing the development there, but the rest of the game is fine. New game + changes medipacks' positions and was great! TR5 is the shortest and has my favorite level of all time: Trajan's Markets. TR6 included the cut content from the original and I liked it. My only complaint are the controls. I played all TR (1-6) with tank controls, but this one almost made me change, it is terrible and makes you die... a lot. And that's it, won't ever play it again. =]
lara croft.
Diese Gut, jedoch The Angel of Darkness.... Einfach Tschösss! (nie beendet)
the devs hated making it, I hated playing it 4 is okay until you get to alexandria, then it really starts getting old, 5 and 6 are slime
It's a pity that Tomb Raider 6 is in this bundle because that is what really brings this down. TR 4 & TR 5 are OK games, but TR 6 isn't just the worst Tomb Raider game, it's one of the worst games period. Be brave before you attempt it because it is worse than you probably think.
♥♥♥♥ the actual dribbling morons that 'remastered' these games - they completely ♥♥♥♥♥♥ everything up. now it needs to be re-remastered. - 'modern camera' - absolute dogshite: Why the ♥♥♥♥ is camera-auto follow locked on? - 'modern controls' - are they stupid and did they even play the original games? you can't backhop without using the look camera or pulling weapons out, you can't sidejump or backflip properly, when your guns are out the direction is relative to camera, unfathomably, and the guns need to be put away to retarget. - Shall we playtest it and realise that we made very important short clips of doors opening skip if you even breath on the controls as they begin to play?? No, don't bother that would require effort and a grain of common sense. But without the gameplay 'modernising' surely they couldn't ♥♥♥♥ up just remastering the *graphics*, right? *Wrong*, they found a way ofc! They are too amateur to even notice that updating the textures and lighting has made many of the in game elements like switches, levers and pickups basically camouflaged and hard to see, in a trilogy of games that are essentially all about: 'Notice the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ thing' and 'Where the ♥♥♥♥ do I go, now?'. You stupid ♥♥♥♥♥. Quit your jobs. Edit --- I'm actually so disappointed with what they've done with this game. they had a chance to remaster the TR games and they made a complete ruin of it. This is honestly worse than I could have even imagined. It's so funny that even after all the years of third person action games since these originals AND the TR survivor series they STILL butchered it this much. What a hopeless effort.
