I played only a few old point-and-click adventure games, and I have only mild nostalgia for them. Thimbleweed Park was just not very fun. A great deal of tedium was created by the process of trial-and-error across a huge combination space of "try using this object with this other object". Actually, there are 8 other verbs besides "use", which further multiplies the combination space. Sometimes those combinations were intuitive, but too often they were not. I don't understand why the developer added so many (by which I mean dozens) of items in the game which have no use whatsoever. This bloated the possible combination space immensely. Multiplying the complexity further was the fact that there are 5 playable characters, with individual inventories, who can move independently around the map, but who don't all access to all the same areas, items, or actions. Items get scattered across all their inventories, as all of the characters end up scattered across the map. The overhead tedium of shuffling characters and items around was overwhelming. Thankfully, the game has an in-game "hint line" which helped me get un-stuck at the most frustrating parts, like: - An item was pickup-able without any indication or logical reason to pick it up - A locked area was suddenly unlocked off-screen by story progress - I was supposed to wait to observe an environmental animation which happened randomly with minutes in between - Forgetting a one-off line by a character which happened hours previous, with no permanent indicator that it was a clue and so on. Now, all this might be forgivable if the game had a compelling or coherent story, but Thimbleweed Park is deeply unserious and does not hold itself to any standard of narrative accountability. Plot threads are totally abandoned. There are no themes or provoking ideas. What Thimbleweed Park has instead is fourth wall breaks, inside jokes, and cultural references.
Love this game. I'm not going to write a full review, but i keep coming back to it; even after beating it long ago.
A Maniac Mansion like modern adventure game. Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick came back with this highly hyped game. It's full of nostalgia and a fresh approach for most of the time. 90% of the game is inspired directly by Maniac Mansion, big head characters, breaking the 4th wall, multiple playable characters each one with their own inventory, even the original Maniac Mansion mansion is here and is a big part of the game. The game starts with a murder mystery in this little town with wacky characters. Most of the first part of the game is getting to meet everyone and start to understand what is going on. There are 9 parts (not 4 like classic Monkey Island games) that are loosely based on specific actions since some parts overlap with puzzles from the other. Some of these parts are just small gags or dialogue scenes so the game length is not as huge as one might think, but it will take some good time to beat. Thimbleweed Park is a tough adventure for newcomers. Luckily it includes a casual mode that removes most of the hardest puzzles or just skips elements in the puzzle chain. It's exactly how it works in Monkey Island 2 and Curse of Monkey Island. The plot is exactly the same, but you will miss entire locations and some of the most interesting sections. It's a love letter to old adventures and to adventure players. The amount of content related to Kickstarters must be a Record Guiness. There's a huge library with books written by fans, hundreds and hundreds of books. Then there's the thousands of telephone answering machine messages recorded by kickstarters. Even items are named after some of the fans. It gets a little weird after a while, it's like you are playing on a museum. Unfortunately the game is not perfect, there's too many playable characters with no real playability differences. Expect to have almost repeated conversations with NPCs with any of these characters. There's also no fast way to trade items between characters, you have to be on the same room and manually give the objects. At one point, you gain access to a wider area, but the game won't indicate that you can have a quick travel item for all of your characters. All these design choices make the game a little cumbersome, specially with the amount of nonsensical items and difficulty of the puzzles. Music and sound effects are nice, not memorable. I was expecting a classic LucasArts OST quality, but this music is mostly background and moody, not much else. Voice acting on the other hand is superb, every character has a very fitting voice with highlights being the two main detectives, Ransome the clown and the sheriff/coroner/hotel manager. Lastly, and without spoiliing, the game has some questionable choices close to the end. The main plot is almost forgotten and some of the twists remind of other controversial endings in LucasArts games. It's still a recommended game, not the masterpiece I expected, but quite good.
Ive been playing point n clicks for well over 30 years now. I quit games because of the bad puzzles, lack of humor, pacing, interface/controls etc but never have i quit a PnC because of the main characters (mulder and scully) voice acting: it is just awful !!!
peak artstyle but i really really wanted to play the games in the arcade
Pretty good game honestly. Room for a bit of improvement, 8/10. Navigation is fairly good, I didn't end up having to transfer too much between inventories (and in any case it's not Deponia-like in that you can only use one grate for it :P ), Puzzles are interesting and reasonably intuitive, In-game hint system is really good (nothing more annoying than having to look up an entire online guide when you just want ONE bit of info to get you past something), Characters are funny and quirky, etc. The game has leisure suit larry mechanics nostalgia but with switchable characters. Plenty long enough to have fun with it and then leave it behind with some good feelings. Like I say pretty good and fun overall. I'd probably think about tweaking some of the more annoying (time consuming) navigation elements like in the hotel and once you leave town and I would have loved to have found some tokens to use in the place you use tokens just for a bit more fleshing out of the town locations. Oh and I didn't like the one ethereal character much, whereas Ransom was a blast :) Will be on the lookout for more like this from the devs!
Sehr witzig und wunderbar inszeniert.
The game gave me five characters and inventories, a phone book full of numbers, a town full of places, and let me pick up stuff I didn't need. Figure it the f out: the game.
decent build up for a nothing burger story. waste of time
