The puzzle logic makes perfect sense after you look up the answer and cry.
Grim Fandango is one of the best videogames of all time, and despite its old age (originally released in 1998) it still holds up great thanks to its stylization, timeless voice acting, humour, and great characters all throughout. Synopsis The game is set in the Aztec-inspired land of the dead, the place were all reaped souls go to after they die, and where their soul must go through a four-year journey to reach the ninth underworld (which is the ‘eternal rest’). Those who lived virtuous lives have the luxury to skip this, as they have the luxury to board the number nine train and skip the long journey that the sinful souls must face to reach the ninth underworld. The story follows Manny Calavera, a travel agent for the Department of Death, whose job is to sell travel tickets to newly arrived souls in the Land of the Dead. This is where he meets Mercedes Colomar (‘Meche’) a virtuous soul who unfortunately doesn’t have a ticket for the number nine and escapes Manny’s office to travel through the dangers of the Land of the Dead alone. Due to his guilt, Manny sets out on a journey to find and rescue Meche, where an intricate corruption plot is uncovered. The game shines through its story, the gameplay is fun with great interactions with characters, and it rewards the player when he pays attention to the little details. The main problem with this game is that the puzzles often feel convoluted and strange, succumbing to absurd ‘adventure game logic’, but there is no shame in using a guide. Nevertheless, I think this is a game that everyone must play, as it is a timeless masterpiece by the now ‘dead’ studio LucasArts. The problem with the remaster (and why I must give it a negative review) Thanks to the remaster, this masterpiece is readily available to players on all platforms, but it features way too many problems for me to recommend it. During the span of my playthrough, I encountered many game breaking bugs which forced me to close my game or load my latest save file. This often made me lose lots of progress (I didn’t save often), and this could’ve easily been remedied by an autosave system or (if the devs wanted to preserve the original experience) by fixing the bugs (the game has been out for over 11 years). It got to a point where I lost about 2 hours of progress (from year 4 to year 3), which made quit and just watch the remaining hour of gameplay on a walkthrough on YouTube. If a game has this many bugs that cause the game to softlock and makes the player lose progress, I just simply cannot recommend it. Apart from that, Grim fandango is one of the best games I have ever played, I loved its story, characters, and humour in a way that few games have. I recommend Grim Fandango, but I cannot give the remastered a positive review due to its issues.
i feel about grim fandango the same way i feel about one of it's many inspirations, terry gilliam's brazil: this game/movie is wonderful, all-time classic, and so of it's era, not in the sense that it aged poorly but in the opposite sense: that if someone tried to make it today it would cost 450 million dollars, be released straight to xbox gamepass/netflix, and be one of the worst games/movies ever made. thank god it was made in the 90s you should stop looking at the steam page and just play the damn thing already. some of these puzzles are diabolical though what the ♥♥♥♥ tim
Man! What an absolute gem of a game that I don't know if I can really do justice through words. Amazing writing, characters and world building I had a blast playing through this, even if at times I did get lost and have to research how to progress. Overall I'm bummed it took me so long to give this game a shot but I'm so glad I did and you should too!!! Amazing work from Tim Schafer and Lucasarts thank you for such an amazing experience!
One of, if not THE best point and click adventure game of all time!
Grim Fandango, now remastered! Yay! This is how you make a great point and click adventure game. Fun cartoon aesthetic? Check! Fun story with plenty of humor? Check! Great voice acting? Check! Beautiful world to explore? Check! The remaster is fantastic, and replaying it was just as much fun as it was when I first played it as a teenager. Tim Schafer has directed some of the greatest point-and-click adventure games ever made, and Grim Fandango is right at the top of that list. yeah
wonderful game with a magnificent amount of charm, just remember to save often for softlocks / corrupted saves
i can't think of a single person i know that i'd recommend this game to. it's not bad, but it's one of those games where you're using all of your attention span for something that doesn't leave you with anything in the end. the puzzles in this game oscillate between "why would i do that?" and "oh that's not really visually clear." manny, the main character, doesn't really have an archetype of problem solving or a coherent thought process. the game just expects you to jump to conclusions about outcomes. pretty annoying. for being an epic sort of story, every bit of moving the plot forward is a slog followed by some bright spots of funny dialogue with the side characters, but even that gets sort of tainted. whenever manny talks to someone there's usually the main branch of dialogue with the character, the stuff that develops the plot, and your funny chitchat. the problem is when you have a serious conversation with a character and then you're still left with the funny random options. the tone of a conversation gets all scrambled, and to be honest, there's too many options. conversations usually go on too long if you want to hear all the dialogue. (that sounds obvious and stupid, but i swear some of the dialogue is not good enough to make the cut) the story is fine overall. it's less of an adventure game and more of "manually cranking a movie out of a projector." all of the voice acting, music, and art, anything stylistic in the game, is top notch.
One of the best adventure point-and-clicks I've ever played ;-) The amount of humour (including dark one) and colourful sceneries is sometimes overwhelming (in a positive sence of course). The Mexican/Aztec vibe of calaca figures combined with the 'noir' atmoshpere of the 50s really does the work. The music score is absolutely fantastic, and even when I am not gaming - it's still nice to have the album playing in the background. Excellent and addictive plot line, fascinating characters, mind-bending puzzles. Just give it a try, you won't regret ;-)
