Reviews
The Witcher is a game impressive because it's different from most of other rpgs. I'm not just talking about the mythos - related to polish legends and whatever its original writer thought it interesting. But about the way the story is developed. Geralt, the witcher, is a kind of mercenary killing monsters for money - if it was only that, it would be a good game. But the character is very observing and a kind of philosopher, so the events of the game are more related to how you want to approach Geralt's lifestyle than anything else. The combat is very different and for those used to modern hack-and-slash, it can be a bit frustrating. The graphics hold up and the voicing, at least in English, is really good. Old game, but worth it.
I'm too ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stoopid for this game man.
Man, this game feels straight-up awful and it's easily the weakest link in the series by a mile. Coming off Witcher 2 or 3? Don't bother. The combat is a total mess: Geralt swings his sword like a drunk idiot with zero proper dodging, and fights quickly turn into you awkwardly circling enemies while they spam cocky one-liners right before you clip their heads off at the hips. Stance swapping mid-fight is clunky as hell, the input lag is real, and it never feels satisfying. Graphics and models look super dated even for the Enhanced Edition — tons of reused assets, a cheap lifeless world, and that janky old engine shows everywhere. Controls are unresponsive, the GUI is a pain, and it gets buggy or straight-up crashes on modern setups. The story has some cool potential with meaningful choices and all, but pushing through the frustrating gameplay to get to it is a total chore. If you're a die-hard fan, maybe power through for the lore, but for anyone else it's borderline unplayable nowadays. Huge disappointment. Not recommended.
