About
GOOD NEWS EVERYONE: By purchasing the game, you actually get two games now: 1) The original The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, 2) The Unreal Engine 4 remaster called The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Redux. Please see The Astronauts website for details.
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a first-person story-driven mystery game that focuses entirely on exploration and discovery. It contains no combat or explosions of any kind. If our game leaves any scars, we hope you won’t be able to see them.
You play the game as Paul Prospero, an occult-minded detective who receives a disturbing letter from Ethan Carter. Realizing the boy is in grave danger, Paul arrives at Ethan’s home of Red Creek Valley, where things turn out to be even worse than he imagined. Ethan has vanished in the wake of a brutal murder, which Paul quickly discerns might not be the only local murder worth looking into.
Inspired by the weird fiction (and other tales of the macabre) from the early twentieth century, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter aims to significantly evolve immersive storytelling in games. While it features a private detective and quite a few mental challenges, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is not an especially puzzle-ridden game. Our focus is on atmosphere, mood, and the essential humanity of our characters.
Still, the discoveries won’t happen on their own, or without your help. Using both Paul’s supernatural skill of being able to communicate with the dead, and your own powers of observation, you will discover the mystery behind a trail of corpses, the roots of a dark ancient force lurking in Red Creek Valley, and the fate of a missing boy.
Explore and interact with the beautiful yet ominous world of Red Creek Valley, which was created with the use of revolutionary photogrammetry technology that allows for nearly photorealistic environments.
Communicate with the dead and see how they died in order to gather clues that help you piece together the truth behind Ethan’s disappearance -- and the fate of his family.
Experience, in non-linear fashion, a story that combines the pleasures of pulp, private eye, and horror fiction, all of it inspired by writers such as Raymond Chandler, Algernon Blackwood, Stefan Grabinski, and H. P. Lovecraft.
Conduct the investigation on your own terms and at your own pace. Although there are a few scary bits in the game, players will have no need for sedatives. Our game is less about terror and more about clammy unease.

Interesting mytery solving game with a really depressing story

This review is only about the Redux version, which I personally recommend playing. It just looks cleaner and more polished.
Pros

A tiny storytelling masterpiece: you play as Paul Prospero, a detective with some supernatural tricks, pulled in by a letter from a kid, Ethan Carter… even if the story isn't linear, it keeps building this creepy vibe until the ending flips everything you thought you knew
It’s emotional and heartbreaking, Ethan Carter and his family have a tragic story made of imagination, innocence, confusion, and depression
Free-form gameplay: as the detective, you can tackle the case in whatever order and pace you feel like
The autumn landscapes are magical, the whole setting is detailed and beautiful everywhere
Puzzle design is top-tier, just the right mix of difficulty and orientation
Great soundtrack
Pretty solid voice acting
The game length… doesn’t really exist, could be super short or take several hours, depending on how you play (I finished it in about 5 hours)
Super easy to 100%

Neutral

The game has no real set order: even if the puzzles are placed along the map, you can do them however you want or even leave them halfway and jump to something else… this freedom is cool, but not always super clear, especially because…
…the map feels like a mix of linear path and open map, you can even walk straight to the end without solving anything, then backtrack all the way whenever you want... I like the design choice, but going back and forth can get a bit tiring
Textures and polygons look generally good but not amazing, it’s a nice example of photogrammetry done well, a decent balance between visuals and performance
Character design is okay, could’ve used more personality though, since the characters kinda look all the same (and a bit cartoonish)
The dialogues are average
The UI is nothing special, menus could’ve been a bit nicer

Cons
Honestly, nothing comes to mind.
Conclusion
Perfect for anyone who loves story-driven games that don’t overstay their welcome. Super worth it for the narrative and the way you explore the case. A little gem you shouldn’t skip. I recommend playing it with a controller.
I really loved this game from start to end. It is very scenic and I don't remember how many times I stopped in between to admire the views and take screenshots. The art style and the colours kind of remind me of Alan Wake, which is great. The soundtrack is quite unnerving and it fits the mysterious tone of the story very well. Now, the story itself is pretty disturbing and eerie at times, and it may seem like there's not much happening, but it pays off really well in the end. This game really nails that weird kind of horror mystery that just makes you think hard once you finish playing it. Definitely recommended!
Beautiful Horror
It really is a pretty looking detective story, with ghosts. And after I spilled my tea one time, it settled down and I found myself walking back to various spots in the game to just take screenshots of the scenery. I did find it at times a bit of a puzzle trying to work out what really happened, because as with all games where you are alone in a landscape, it is hard to find any way to understand the passage of time or verify your assumptions. So although it is scary, the setting just never quite gelled for me and I spent more time just admiring the sound and scene.
Stunning landscapes, but boring af... The ending is the only good thing as it is a nice plot twist.
I really enjoyed playing this game. Very different and kept me guessing. Not too gory. There were a few "jump scares". Good story and the ending made me cry.
Walking Simulator, with amazing visuals
