About
GOOD NEWS EVERYONE: By purchasing the game, you actually get two games now: 1) The original The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, 2) The Unreal Engine 4 remaster called The Vanishing of Ethan Carter Redux. Please see The Astronauts website for details.
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a first-person story-driven mystery game that focuses entirely on exploration and discovery. It contains no combat or explosions of any kind. If our game leaves any scars, we hope you won’t be able to see them.
You play the game as Paul Prospero, an occult-minded detective who receives a disturbing letter from Ethan Carter. Realizing the boy is in grave danger, Paul arrives at Ethan’s home of Red Creek Valley, where things turn out to be even worse than he imagined. Ethan has vanished in the wake of a brutal murder, which Paul quickly discerns might not be the only local murder worth looking into.
Inspired by the weird fiction (and other tales of the macabre) from the early twentieth century, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter aims to significantly evolve immersive storytelling in games. While it features a private detective and quite a few mental challenges, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is not an especially puzzle-ridden game. Our focus is on atmosphere, mood, and the essential humanity of our characters.
Still, the discoveries won’t happen on their own, or without your help. Using both Paul’s supernatural skill of being able to communicate with the dead, and your own powers of observation, you will discover the mystery behind a trail of corpses, the roots of a dark ancient force lurking in Red Creek Valley, and the fate of a missing boy.
Explore and interact with the beautiful yet ominous world of Red Creek Valley, which was created with the use of revolutionary photogrammetry technology that allows for nearly photorealistic environments.
Communicate with the dead and see how they died in order to gather clues that help you piece together the truth behind Ethan’s disappearance -- and the fate of his family.
Experience, in non-linear fashion, a story that combines the pleasures of pulp, private eye, and horror fiction, all of it inspired by writers such as Raymond Chandler, Algernon Blackwood, Stefan Grabinski, and H. P. Lovecraft.
Conduct the investigation on your own terms and at your own pace. Although there are a few scary bits in the game, players will have no need for sedatives. Our game is less about terror and more about clammy unease.

The story is legitimately good, but man was it difficult to get through. The game opens up by saying "There will be no hand-holding", but it literally does not even explain the core mechanics of the gameplay to you. I had to look up a walkthrough on HOW TO PLAY after wasting an hour wandering around aimlessly. Not to mention that you also don't really get a solid idea of what else you need to find or how certain puzzles are meant to work or anything. I can appreciate a game that encourages you to figure it out for yourself, but this isn't it, chief.
"What happens then?" "Another story, kid. What else?" Man, this game destroyed me. I haven't been this sad completing a game since The Suicide of Rachel Foster. I cannot stress just how remarkable this game was. From beautiful storytelling, stunning environments, and an enjoyable, yet simple game play - this game is just. So. Good. Definitely a new favorite. 10/10.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter (2014) The Astronauts
Walking simulator game but one of the very best because of the beautiful narrative experience ! You get the Remaster version for FREE, which I completed in 5-6 hours. (Total playtime 8.8 hours. Work/lunch/general AFK) The only notable differences between Standard and Redux versions are that Redux weighs half the GB and runs far smoother as well as has better lighting and shadows. The game does not hold your hand, but is designed in a simple and smart way to lead the player in the right direction. The detective puzzles were interesting and not that hard. While I personally prefer "What Remains of Edith Finch" as it is well constructed and plays in a smaller but compact environment, "The Vanishing of Ethan Carter" provides a realistic atmosphere and beautiful forest and lake. The ending also was unexpected and put everything we experienced into perspective. With a total combined 7650 positive reviews (date: 4th November 2023), this game proves to be a cult classic in the genre and should be played by everyone at least once. Hard recommend!
Introduction
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a first-person adventure game. By buying this game, you will receive 2 versions of it, the Original and Redux, which offers slightly better graphics. This review is based on the Redux version of the game.
Pros & Cons
Pros: + Breathtaking visuals + Engaging story + Dense atmosphere of mystery Cons: - No clues or tutorial of any kind, easy to get lost - A lot of walking around
Story
You're playing as a detective, Paul Prospero, who's investigating the disappearance of the boy Ethan. Using your supernatural abilities, you'll be able to see scenes from the past and reconstruct the story of Ethan's family. The story is captivating, and it has a lot of depth to it. The game doesn't explain everything as detective stories usually tend to do, instead it leaves a lot of room for interpretation.
Gameplay
The game's mechanics are pretty simple, you're walking around reading notes, collecting items and occasionally solving a puzzle. Puzzles are pretty simple, some require you to find an item and use it on something in the game's world, some make use of the protagonist's supernatural abilities by making you place scenes from the past in chronological order. There are no hints, but the goal is always clear, so it's hard to get stuck. However, the game's world is pretty big, so it's easy to get lost while searching for items, however, there's a hidden mechanic that can help you. I'm not going to disclose it here, since the game wants you to figure out by yourself for some reason, but when you get stuck, just go into "Guides" section on Steam and find out. Even though most of the game's puzzles can be easily solved by trying out every possible solution, they are still fun to solve and make you feel like a detective.
Graphics & Audio
This game was release 8 years ago, and it can put to shame most modern AAA games. The visuals are just stunning, you can easily mistake a screenshot from this game for a photo. Locations are filled with little details, that make the game's world feel alive. The sound design is on par with the visuals. The music creates a tense mystery atmosphere and highlights dramatic moments. Voice actors are also doing their best to sound convincing, and you really get to care for their characters.
Performance
Specs: AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Laptop GPU 8GB, 32GB RAM. The game runs at 60 FPS on max settings in 1080p resolution. The frame rate is stable, and I haven't experienced any technical issues.
Conclusion
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a short mystery game with astonishing visuals and a few simple puzzles. So if you're looking for a story-focused game, that can be completed in one evening, you should pick it up.
Guck mal hin! Ist ja was ganz Neues, gähn... Gut so! Also dürfen auch Horror hassende Mystik-Detektive zugreifen. Schmökern for free: Also stell Dir nen Tee bereit und viel Spaß beim Lesen...
Paul Prospero is a supernatural detective, one of the rare few who can interact with the unusual, and has a spectacular ability to glimpse into the past by recreating it; solving impossible murders. Reading his fan mail, Paul gets a letter from a young boy named Ethan Carter who has a special ability himself - Using the ability to see hidden things and places in his home of Red Creek Valley, he’s stumbled on something weird, and reaches out for help. Recognizing the significant threat, Paul heads to his location only to find that darkness has already settled in the valley. Follow the trail of corpses, piece together what happened, and discover the fate of the missing Ethan Carter. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3215696588 4-5+ hours to complete, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a supernatural detective walking sim where you solve multiple murders and use a special ability to see into the past to piece the story together. Purchasing this game also gives you the updated redux version made in Unreal Engine 4, while the original was made in 3. Overall, I had a positive experience playing; the storyline, voice acting, graphics, writing, and exploration were pretty fun. In particular, I want to mention that the area is made with Photogrammetry; in which remote sensing is used to take multiple photos to make a digital map to create complicated 2D or 3D digital objects. For example, the mountain range shown is based on the Polish Karkonosze mountains. There is one easily avoidable jumpscare that gives you plenty of warning. The only cons I can think of are that some story sections can be accidentally skipped if you wander off, breaking the flow of the game when you have to backtrack, and that the game is autosave only. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3215696185
In a beautiful yet spooky world where the game doesn’t hold your hand, it tells a story of walking the line between the human and the supernatural. It was a strange, surprising, and captivating experience—a tense and chilling journey through breathtaking landscapes. Despite the generally simple puzzles, occasional moments of emptiness, and a few minor issues, the immersive story and its dreamlike quality were truly impressive.
A lot of people seem to have found a lot to like about this game, but ho boy was I not one of them. As both a fan of, and advocate for, immersive narratives of the kind sometimes derided as "walking sims," I sadly found The Vanishing of Ethan Carter to exemplify everything about the genre that's frustrating. Featuring an unhurried protagonist with a fondness for portentous voiceovers, limited interactivity and an impressionistic plot, Ethan Carter felt more about mood than gameplay or even narrative. After stumbling through the entire game world in less than an hour and feeling I was missing the point, I learned online that progress is through a series of non-linear, un-signposted "puzzles" that principally test the player's patience for scouring the environment for interactive objects. The game apparently does offer some environmental cues, but they were too subtle for me; rendering the exercise one of unappealing trial-and-error. Ethan Carter is beautiful, atmospheric and totally not for me. Maybe grab it on sale and see if it's a better fit for you. But I found Firewatch, Tacoma and Edith Finch all to be vastly superior exemplars of the "walking sim" genre.
