The Trials is an amazing puzzle game that I would highly recommend with a small caveat. In addition to challenging your intellect, parts of this game require some tricky coordination with running, jumping, and moving boxes. I have been playing with a keyboard and mouse, as my Steam controller has not been cooperative. For those who enjoy games like The Talos Principle and The Witness, The Trials is a must-play. The scenery is beautiful, the puzzles are diverse, and there are easier versions of each puzzle type to help you learn the solution logic as you go. I continue to take great satisfaction each time I solve a new scenario. Those wanting 100% on The Trials should be prepared to do quite a bit of climbing and jumping in the quest for jewels. However, finding all jewels is not required for progressing in the game. There is an automatic save on exit which retains all of your jewel collection progress. When you return to the game, you will be in a predefined 'respawn' location. You will then need to return to where you were when you quit playing and, in some cases, repeat a few activities. In areas with complex puzzles, your progress is saved so these do not have to be repeated. For each puzzle you solve, you are rewarded with jewels that are used to open new areas (as indicated by the map function). I was able to find additional jewels by simply paying attention (some are in tricky places). I have mastered the skills: (1) 'Record' (a bit like The Talos Principle but with a shorter time line and playback 'in reverse'); (2) 'Switch' (objects appear in two different realities which must be switched between to perform a task); and (3) 'Orbs' (teleporting between locations) As you learn skills, areas open that let you combine them to do some very creative problem solving. Although some players breeze through this game, it was a very challenging experience for me. But, it remained intriguing enough to hold my interest. I kept trying each time I missed a jump or ran out of time. When I was not playing, I was reflecting on puzzles and visualizing solutions. For me, these are hallmarks of a very well made adventure! Kudos to Blue Life for a great experience. The further I get into the game, the more impressed I am by the design and flow of the skills/puzzles. It is in a word, 'brilliant!' Blue Life (the developer) has been amazingly responsive to player feedback. Since the initial release, they have streamlined the jumping mechanics, simplified some of the trickier puzzles, and lengthened the Record timeline. This type of commitment to the player experience goes a long way towards building loyalty and is much appreciated!
The Trials is split into main puzzles and side puzzles, The side puzzles are in an open world where you can solve them in any order. And if you can't solve one you can just leave it and try a different puzzle. There are about 15 unique side puzzles and some has different difficulties. Most of the side puzzles were really good but some were okay. The main puzzles are linear, And you have to solve some side puzzle to collect enough gems to unlock the main puzzles. I would rate the main puzzles 9/10. The side puzzles 8/10. Worth the price.
This is an awesome game and highly recommended for those who like brain-teasers and thinking out of the box! The controls, as well some other minor issues might need some adjustments but the dev is all ears, having fixed a lot since the first release (jumping, extremely difficult stages etc). Well done! PS For me, the game is better with a controller therefore key binding should be considered. Gems count (acquired/total) would also be appreciated. The puzzle with the double doors at the beginning of the record phase was exceptional (glad to have solved it alone). Some puzzles I solved by luck, still cannot understand the reasoning (i.e the "quarter"-rings) and some I solved under extreme time pressure and precise action moves (i don't like mixing puzzles with action). Nevertheless, I' m still playing the game and enjoying it immensely. Money well spent (not a common thing)!
The Trials is a good puzzle game, and very well priced for the amount of content. You use a mixture of 3 different 'abilities' which lends itself to some cool mechanics It's not very difficult, and just when the puzzles start to get interesting, you've completed that part of the game and move on to the next thing. Could have done without the content filler extra puzzles dotted around the island Some of the puzzles with time constraints are unnecessarily tedious, although I was using controller and probably would have found them easier with mouse and keyboard. There is massive potential here, I hope the dev has refined some of the rough edges of this first game for their sequel
very nice game It's like the witness game New and unique stages Nice sound and control The graphics are nice, but there are better ones In the end, if you love puzzle games, you should try it edit: There is a really really hard puzzle in this game tbh i didn't solve it and the problem there is no hint soo... you you need to solve it by your self
$H!T game 10/10
it is amazing puzzles game ever
Very good first person puzzler. Maybe even on par with something like the Talos Principle or the Witness. The 3 mechanics: Time recording (only for boxes though), swapping platform locations and teleporting to spots are very intuitive and make for challenging puzzles. My Problem with the game are the early open world puzzles that don't require a mechanic yet, more namely the block push puzzles. You have to walk into them to slowly push them which takes ages. Or the one puzzle that had you rotate a giant disc to deciffer symbols that only rotates at a snails pace. Maybe too much inspiration from the Witness in that area. Worse the symbols seem to always have the same value so if you just walk over the island and write down all the other spots with codes then you can entirely skip that puzzle. But other than that it seems to be a neat game.
PRO 1. Graphics are absolutely beautiful. 2. Interesting puzzles. CON 1. There is WAY too many gems to have to collect. 2. A couple of the gems are harder to reach than they should be.
What seems like a very simple game on the surface is everything but. It's very engaging and the puzzles can be really challenging. I spent 40 minutes on a single puzzles, felt great after finishing it. The diversity in puzzles and the challenges each one provide is admirable for an indie game
