The Town of Light is one of those games where the idea is much stronger than the game itself. The atmosphere of the psychiatric hospital is genuinely oppressive and unsettling at times, but almost everything else feels weak. The biggest problem is the gameplay. Most of the time you just slowly walk through identical corridors, read notes, and try to figure out where the game actually wants you to go. Instead of tension, you end up feeling bored. The game is short, but somehow still feels twice as long as it really is. The story is also presented in a strange way: flashbacks, hallucinations, fragmented memories - at some point it all turns into a confusing mess. The game tries very hard to be deep and disturbing, but sometimes it feels like the developers are simply piling on darkness for the sake of shock value. Another annoying thing is that many people call it a horror game, even though it’s barely scary at all. It’s more like a depressing walk through an abandoned asylum. Yes, the themes of psychiatry and human trauma are powerful here, but as a game, The Town of Light feels unpolished, boring, and often exhausting.
It was just... wow The Town of Light is a game about a person truly breaking down. It doesn't scare you with jump scares; it makes you feel incredibly uncomfortable. And I don't think it's a negative that there's no running in the game, because that's exactly what they want you to do – soak up the atmosphere. Playing as the main character and experiencing her memories of sexual abuse, trauma, vulnerability, and loneliness just forces you to process it all without any explanation or hope that the person can get out of it.
What am I even talking about? The lobotomy scene made me want to puke and cry at the same time, lol.
And the whole ending was so affecting and shocking that I simply didn't know what to feel. This is the game that gave me such shocking things and then left me with them. What's especially frightening is the fact that the game is based on real events and practices in Italian mental hospitals before the 1978 reform, which further immerses you in this feeling of hopelessness. The themes in this game may resonate differently with different people, but the game doesn't ask for anything in return, it only leaves you in thought and confusion. I'm amazed.
Abandoned Mental Hospital Walking Simulator There is no frame lock option, so the computer makes a loud noise when it goes over several hundred frames. The achievements require multiple playthroughs due to choices, but fortunately, there is a chapter selection option. However, there is no cutscene skip.
Went to Volterra Psychiatric Hospital, found some interesting things, made a friend, lost friend, recalled childhood memories, got a Lobotomy, then I played this game.
This has got to be one of the heaviest, if not the absolute most devastating game I have ever played.
The game vividly bequeaths you to a time and place void of hope, whence there is no return. If you truly immerse yourself in it, the story touches the deepest recesses of your consciousness. It took me the whole game to realize that you are actually playing as the wraith of someone who was once trapped within the asylum walls. This game is not for everyone, but it is an incredibly profound and unique masterpiece
Great game, with a solid theme that fits the game's atmosphere and level design very well. The abandoned asylum and the surrounding areas are amazing to explore with the added feel of horror.
Genuinely one of the most horrifying games I've played - not because there are jumpscares, gore, or body horror (there's little to none of that), but because everything depicted were real atrocities inflicted on real people. The story is incredibly poignant, as it is sobering. That aside, it's a very pretty game, especially for 2016. The music is beautiful and the voice acting is solid. My only complaint is I wish you could at least walk a little faster, especially when you have to get across big open stretches. I paid less than $5 for the game, and it was money well spent. 7/10
Un CAPOLAVORO! A MASTERPIECE ! Curatissimo nei dettagli e nella storyline! Da giocare insieme a Martha Is Dead !! Complimenti agli sviluppatori!!
