It's a pretty meh horror walking simulator, you've three things with you a map, a compass, and your flashlight. Out of the blue even if you turn off your flash and crouch the demons/souls whatever run at you and you die. Spoiler Alert. The game has 3 acts but act 3: Really shouldn't exist, it's the ending in which you just need to walk for 30 seconds and that's it. I don't recommend this even on sale, unless you like walking simulators with some supernatural beings. Kholat 4/10 Heisen
Kholat is one of those games that nails a very specific mood and then dares you to either sink into it or walk away bored. At its core, it’s not really a horror game in the traditional sense. There’s very little action, no real combat system, and nothing that constantly pushes you forward. Instead, you’re dropped into a vast, frozen mountain range with just a map, a compass, and your own sense of direction. That’s the whole loop: navigate, interpret clues, find locations, and slowly piece together fragments of a disaster that already happened. What carries the experience is atmosphere. The environment feels genuinely hostile in a quiet way — endless snowfields, empty forests, abandoned camps, and a constant feeling that you’re somewhere you probably shouldn’t be. The audio design does a lot of heavy lifting here too: wind howling through trees, distant noises you can’t immediately explain, and moments where silence becomes more unsettling than any monster. The story itself, tied loosely to the Dyatlov Pass incident, is presented in a fragmented, interpretive way. You’re not really “told” what happened — you collect pieces and try to make sense of it. That said, don’t expect a satisfying or clean resolution. It leans heavily into ambiguity, which will either feel intriguing or frustrating depending on what you want from a narrative. Gameplay-wise, it’s where opinions split the most. Navigation can be engaging at first, especially when you’re still learning the terrain and relying on landmarks. But over time, travel can start to feel repetitive, and backtracking after mistakes or deaths can kill the pacing. Encounters with hostile elements exist, but they’re inconsistent and often feel more like interruptions than core mechanics. Overall, Kholat is less about “playing” and more about enduring a mood. If you enjoy slow, atmospheric exploration and don’t mind getting lost both literally and narratively, it can be memorable. If you need structure, progression, or replay value, it will likely feel empty once the credits roll.
I am going to recommend the game for the following reasons: - The musical score was, at times, quite good. - The environments were actually pretty well designed. - The gameplay actually simulated an experience of being lost pretty well. My biggest problems with the game: was that the story, told through finding scraps of lore (some narrated and some not), was extremely disjointed and at times difficult to follow. There are many instant death mechanics that come out of nowhere and make you have to restart at an automated check point. This can lead to some frustrating experiences with being lost or having to walk long distances only to be met with instant death and then having to do it all over again. The game took me about 5 hours to beat, I kind of gave up on getting all the lore scraps after a while and just stuck to the ones that would progress the story. You could probably sink a few more hours into it if you wanted to get them all. Overall, I don’t think it’s worth paying full price but not a bad sale pick up if you are looking to play through a being lost simulator, which also happens to look quite pretty. If you would like to check out a play through for the game, I got you covered with my video here: https://youtu.be/LncMQMZO9bE If you have a quick moment to subscribe to my channel (it’s free), please do. I am trying to grow support for the channel, and I would be grateful for time. Thank you!
I got it for free. Normalized for the fact that it is free, its mid at best. Garbage most of the time. Don't waste your money. Reason I played so much is because I challenged myself to 100% my entire library before I allow myself to buy more games.
A walking simulator in a very atmospheric snow storm. It's quiet slow and isn't really a horror game with action and combat system but feels more like Amnesia where you have to manage stamina and sanity. You're tasked with using the map and compass to find notes that tell the story and find locations of interest. Could be of interest to those who enjoy atmospheric walking simulators that is directed by your own will to investigate.
Kholat 100% Completion – All Achievements Rating: 5/10 Kholat is a game carried almost entirely by its atmosphere and mystery. From a gameplay perspective, it's very simple. Most of the game consists of moving through a network of paths connected by central points, searching for key locations and collecting story notes and optional collectibles. There are also light horror mechanics, including supernatural encounters and a strange sprint system where running for more than a few seconds starts "killing" your character. It's not particularly engaging and often feels more frustrating than immersive. The main focus is clearly the atmosphere. And to be fair, the developers did a solid job there. The visuals were impressive at release and, at the time, Kholat was one of the more demanding and better-looking indie titles on the market. Even today, the snowy wilderness, weather effects, and environmental design hold up reasonably well. The level design works nicely with the horror encounters, creating a constant feeling of isolation and uncertainty. Music and sound are mostly good, but sometimes you hear generic effects that don't fit the action particularly well. The problem is the story. The entire game is built around the Dyatlov Pass incident, a real historical event that took place in the Soviet Union. Over the decades, the tragedy became surrounded by myths, urban legends, and conspiracy theories. Depending on who tells the story, it involved ghosts, werewolves, secret experiments, shamans, aliens, military cover-ups, or other supernatural explanations. Personally, I've always found the real-world explanation far more believable: a combination of harsh conditions, poor preparation, inadequate equipment, bureaucratic negligence, and the usual chaos of the Soviet system. Missing documents, incomplete records, and contradictory reports only fueled speculation. That's pretty common for Soviet history - just look at the countless infrastructure projects that cost enormous numbers of lives, environmental disasters like the destruction of the Aral Sea, and incidents where people suffered due to pride, arrogance, incompetence, and the negligence of those in charge. Kholat chooses a different direction. Instead of exploring the human tragedy, it leans heavily into paranormal explanations, mysterious entities, and secret experiments. That's a perfectly valid creative choice for a horror game, but I found the resulting narrative surprisingly boring. The mystery never felt compelling enough to justify the journey, and many of the reveals lacked impact. Overall, Kholat is an interesting one-day experience. The atmosphere is good, the environments are memorable, and the horror elements are competently executed. If the gameplay mechanics were stronger and the story more engaging, I would rate it much higher. I can recommend it to fans of atmospheric exploration games, winter horror, and mysterious narratives. Just don't expect groundbreaking gameplay or a particularly satisfying explanation for its central mystery. P.S. After playing The Long Dark during winter, this game can be surprisingly atmospheric.
It's a VERY slow game, but if you are in just for the vibes, by all means, play it. You should not be expecting to get anything particular off of this game though. Still, I'd recommend it while it's on a good sale.
