This is a game about the FBI Hostage Rescue Team being coopted as a CIA death squad. You go from rescuing hostages and fellow FBI agents from Waco-style separatists to breaking and entering a neutral port to murder its night staff and steal its records, carrying out the international assassinations of businessmen in their homes and offices, to breaking into a man's home to plant a car bomb in his personal vehicle before detonating it without warning in the streets of Vienna. This game is a lot of fun despite the incongruous use of the HRT, but the US security services did grease a lot of people in the wake of 9/11 so maybe this is what would happen if terrorists nuked Baltimore? Who knows! This game is basically Rainbow Six for the first mission and then goes right past Ghost Recon into Delta Force series territory, which I love but this game is totally gonzo and Hollywood by comparison to contemporaneous Tom Clancy shooters. If this seems like an appealing use of the Ghost Recon/Rainbow Six engines to you, I recommend it. You can complete it in an afternoon but it's like a dollar a mission and that's not bad. One thing this game does really well is the coordinated multi-unit SWAT team room/building-takedown thing. It does this by having your squad (optionally) follow a series of waypoints that, if completed, will theoretically complete the mission when working in tandem with the NPC teams (unless they get whacked, which happens, but not often enough to be frustrating). They'll make their entries when you hit certain waypoints, so you get a lot of dramatic but only lightly-scripted scenes where your team enters through one door and another team exits from another and there's a three-second firefight with whoever's in the room. You see them streaming into doors and buildings a lot, and you encounter them around corners a lot, but you can see them on the minimap. A lot of the time in Rainbow Six/Ghost Recon the enemy is pretty thinly spread over the map; not here, maps aren't that big but after the first few missions they're absolutely crawling with bad guys to be stamped out like ants (with the same throaty, ♥♥♥♥-hard crowing over kills as Ghost Recon, which you'd think an FBI agent might try to suppress, not that I'm complaining). One contribution to the Ghost Recon engine from Rainbow Six is the lock-on-head gunsights of Rainbow Six operators; this means that your HRT operator is more precise than the last game's Green Berets, but given the numbers you're facing it would sometimes be better to be able to just hose down a room with automatic gunfire instead of killing one guy then waiting for your targeting sensors to realign on the next guy before he turns you into hamburger because you've gotta stack corpses like Achilles. You go from West Virginia to Lebanon to Austria; not exactly communities hostile to the United States, but I guess in this game they contain competing right wing death squads who must be extirpated by the CIA's right wing death squad; not that I'm complaining, because this is fun game
As it is, doesn't even run due to ancient DRM, so you'd have to look for a fix to even get this game to run. This is basically CQB Ghost Recon, and it's about as rough as that sounds. Definitely an awkward middle ground between Red Storm's prior games and their magnum opus of Raven Shield. It's short and a bit jank in its design. That said however, this is likely a high watermark in quickly put together movie tie-in games. Helps it ties into the film in a bizarrely satisfying way by game's end. If you ever wanted a side story gaiden type experience to a Ben Affleck movie, well, here you go, I guess.
The executable available on steam is broken, but you can find fixed ones in the games forums. This game is a wonderful little hidden gem. If you like Rainbow Six or Ghost Recon at all this will tickle you. It's very stripped down compared to those; there's no planning phase to start and has Ghost Recon style loadouts with no options for armour or attachments, and is startlingly linear for what it is, but it down to its core is still a Tom Clancy game, for better and worse. Grab it on a sale and have a good time. It natively supports up to 4k resolutions (possibly higher, I just can't test higher than that), runs great with no tweaking (though you will likely want to download a mod to tweak the FOV) and LAN works perfectly if you want to play co-op or multiplayer. Overall, a surprisingly solid entry in the broader Tom Clancy family of games.
I do not recommend this game. Reason: the game has no DRM, does not work on Windows 10 Pro or 11, and is not supported by Steam. I tried contacting Steam support, but I had to go directly to my profile. The game is still being sold, but the developer has not posted any message explaining why the game no longer works, why it gives error 85, and why Windows compatibility does not work.
Very fun and heavily underrated Tom Clancy, its a Rainbow Six with a movie name on top. The campaign itself isn't too long, there are only 11 missions and like 5 "custom" maps that you can play outside of the main campaign. The tactics aspect is not as complex as Rainbow Six 3. Think about it like a simplified Rainbow Six 3. still very fun and with the difficulty set to HARD it can be very challenging. Recommended Classic!
Recommended if purchased on sale. Did however ran into a steam error code 51. Found a solution https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1563235234 just follow Samz directions in the comments. Then run the SOAF.exe as administrator. Game runs identically to Ghost Recon with a few changes. Play the game on a difficulty besides easy. As easy difficulty is easier than Ghost Recon easy difficulty. I found Ghost Recon easy level fairly difficult. Recommend to then use quick save so you can progress through the game at a good pace. However the game is fairly short to play.

Got the error code 85 popup when first starting it up. For future reference I used Campo's guide on how to fix it: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1563235234 Also playing with cheats is a must, since the A.I. has god tier aim
This may sound sarcastic but it's no: This has to legitimately be one of the best tactical FPS games I've ever played. You have to do some working with downloading a file from a third party, which made me a bit uncomfortable, but it worked fine. I highly recommend, it's like a buck or two on sale. Definitely worth the 5 minutes to get it working. Very excellent game.
