A whole load of nothing, I thought this game was slightly subpar, Weapons have very little impact, and even though there are a handful of types, they all feel the same to use. It's hard to tell when you take damage or what you are getting hit by, unless you look at your health, due to how "floaty" the game feels. Gun sounds are ok, and there are only a few lines of voice acting. The OST is a BANGER, I enjoyed it so much I turned down most of the in-game sound and just had that all the way up. The story is whatever, but the ending did not hit with me; it seems like the devs just went oh yeah, cyberpunk games are full of twists and turns, so let's do that. With no foreshadowing or anything. In some cutscenes, you can choose a response that tends to be either a nod or a shrug, and either way, the game plays out the same, so it's totally pointless. I thought the 2d art was very cool and looked great, but when they were brought into 3d they lost a lot of charm, and all just seemed to blend in together. Even though the game is so short (I finished the game on normal in 4h6m), it still felt like it had "padding." This game loves its corridors with nothing happening. Boss fights are reused a couple of times, and new enemy types are introduced only to fight the same way as the ones before. There is an arena mode and NG+, but I didn't really enjoy the combat that much, so I will not be completing that. And also, this game is another case of a Steam game that's in the 90% rating that NOBODY has finished. The game is so short, yet only 19% of players have reached the end. What's up with that? 4/10
Had this on wish list for a while, and even at $2 on sale this one is getting a negative from me - game tries way too hard to be edgy and just comes off as complete cringe in every aspect of its design. The whole prologue of the game they keep spamming KILLBOSS on your screen every single minute, and as other reviews state there is too much flashing on the screen on top of a (story?) that just isn't engaging. Combat feels too inconsequential and all weapons are just too same-y to even matter in the grand scheme of things on top of lacking any real challenge or interesting level design. Move to new small area > hordes of enemies > rinse and repeat. No custom control remapping is also criminal for a game like this and should be the bare minimum - refunding.
Had to return because the game has an ungodly amount of flashing lights and gives no option to turn them off. Awful.
(HAVEN'T FINISHED THE GAME, still continuing) In short, fun and clunky In long terms, Something really just hits about this game's atmosphere and design, they're so miserable yet so pretty. The combat is enjoyable enough to keep me going, and the storytelling is alright. The only part of this game that pisses me off, is just how stupidly chaotic the game is, it's something I'm impressed and distastful of, one fight and the screen could clutter with effects so much, that it's impressive for the game to not lag and still being able to see enemy position. And even then you still need to utilize abilties, it's really my fault for not utilizing it well, but I'm just peefed with the fact that I have to locked in with this effects while having the need to remember I can shock them or something.
Crazy it's only $2 right now. This is peak single-player top-town twin-stick shooting.
the movement lost me before the story could find me. cyberpunk: 10/10 / movement: 0/10
breathtaking worldbuilding and awesome game , really love it!!
Has a lot riding on the borrowed cyberpunk aesthetic, and is thematically pretty flat without it. Plot is uninspired and characters are vague slot-fillers. Overall control scheme is slightly flawed, even in early levels enemies will appear off screen and shoot at you before you can even see anything, since the zoom level can't be altered. Entire balance mechanic hinges on constantly slowing down time and 'dashing' everywhere to avoid attacks while spinning the mouse constantly and more or less spamming attacks. Has the feeling of a Diablo like ARPG without the saving grace of overpowered stat builds and spell combos to save it. 'Great Soundtrack' tag is a laugh, only if you're into ambient techno-drone.
Dystopian top-down shooter with plenty of action. I was surprised to see RUINER being compared to Hotline Miami since it plays a lot differently, but I guess after finishing it, looking back at it and ignoring the core gameplay, it kind of gives off the same vibe. It's an action-packed experience limited to battle rooms where you can attack with melee weapons or ranged ones, both of which you can pick up and switch as you wish. There are plenty of drops through enemies, random pickups and "gifts" from time to time throughout the battles, and their ammo is also extensive, making it very forgiving to spam your way out. Combat is limited to these rooms, so there's plenty of breathing room in between battles to recompose and prep for the next one. Although you're blasting your way through like in Hotline Miami, in RUINER there's health and energy to manage that can be recovered throughout battles and spent on powers like shields and slowdown timers that slowdown the gameplay and add another layer of strategy. There's also no impact when being hit and a dash ability with a really low recharge time that can be almost constantly spammed and used as a cop-out in many encounters. As you progress through the game, you can upgrade these powers, experiment with different combos and pick and choose which one you prefer or which one is most useful against a certain enemy. Where it really excels is in its atmosphere, especially in its art direction and soundtrack. It's able to create a beautiful, dark, dystopian and futuristic environment, but since the game is pretty short and there's only one main HUB with the rest of the action being on underground levels, it leaves you wanting for more. The 2D panels are great and incredibly detailed with lots of personality but don't translate well into 3D. Cutscenes are rare, short and forgettable. The soundtrack is probably the game's strongest feature. Aside from being fantastic, it fit perfectly with the rest of the game. I found myself from time to time just enjoying it on loop during some non-action sections. The story is pretty straightforward and predictable. You seem to have no control over your actions. Characters are pretty forgettable with not much development. There's really not much to be said, it left much to be desired compared to the rest of the game. All in all, it gave me a couple of hours of fun for 2€ on sale, so I would recommend it for that price.
