really fun and engaging top-down...just enough roguelite elements to keep it interesting, just enough difficulty to keep you on your toes, just enough progression to make you want to play more, just enough variety in the combat to make you want to try everything only cons would be the slight jank (sometimes damage/hits just flat out don't happen but it's pretty rare) and sometimes there's cheap deaths where you're punished pretty hard for not being 100% careful and 100% proactive but it's easy enough to get back into another run and gamble on a different build...also the hovertank boss is WAY too easy, this definitely needs a rework 10tons is rapidly becoming my favorite indie dev, BIG FAN
Really solid game. Great atmosphere, good music, and good gameplay and good pace.
A solid Rogue-like! Very fun to play. Neon Chrome is not the flashiest game out there but it feels like a game you would of played on the PS2 and arguably, PS2 games were some of the funnest times in gaming. Almost Everything is procedurally generated, from the character you pick before you start a run, to the enemies that spawn, to the rooms you explore. There is a ton of variety when it comes to gameplay. A good collection of weapons and cybernetic enhancements, the bosses are super fun to fight and the destructible environment adds an extra layer of enjoyment. I had a great experience climbing the Neon Chrome upwards going through floors and clearing rooms out while being able to execute sneak attacks on unsuspected foes. Now, there is some issues with the game although they are pretty minor for the most part. There is not a lot of options for combat, all you get is your main weapon and a sub ability, which tends to be either a grenade or rocket you can throw (there are a few others but these are the main ones). Because of this, sometimes sticky situations can become very sticky as there is no dodge or roll button. You also have a melee ability but I barely used that as its not that optimal. There aren't a lot of bosses, which is a shame because they were fun to battle. A run can be incredibly lengthy; the higher you go the longer the levels become. They got around this by allowing you to take an elevator after beating certain sectors of the tower (after a boss), but if you want to do a pure, no elevator run, you will be playing for an incredibly long time. The levels getting longer does not help either as the last few levels had me doing the same objectives for every floor. The art direction of the floors does not look very different from one another, there isnt a lot of difference from floor 1 or floor 25, it always looks grey and cold, which I understand that this is cyberpunk themed, but some color and a bit more variety would of been appreciated as you progress. The music does repeat as well, I think I only heard a total of 4 songs throughout my whole playthrough. Overall, the game can feel and get repetitive the longer you play and higher you climb. Despite the shortcomings, I had a great time with the game. Being able to install cybernetic enhancements, picking up different rarities of weapons, getting different character builds before starting a run and blowing up terrain while purposefully positioning npcs on explosions to kill them was very enjoyable. The boss fights were the cherry on top as they were challenging and exciting. A very solid game that I think anyone that is into twin stick shooters and rogue likes will enjoy. You can even play with friends!
Good mechanics, but a successful run just takes too long and is too repetitive.
Another twin stick from 10ton. I really like twin stick, and this one is WAY better than Crimsonland. Lots of fun to play, and 100%. 8/10
I loved this game from the start and still feel the same. Great twin-stick shooter with excellent synth music.
Surprisingly good game. Unlike other top-down shooters it has the right 'feel' and balance of difficulty, movement, mechanics, level size and addictiveness. Guns feel powerful and difficulty ramps up slowly but surely. Has various character types for replayability. Good for the price and a must-buy on discount if you're a cyberpunk fan.
System Shock + hotline miami + nostalgia vibes. Rouglite elements, simple game, difficult but easy, great game, hidden gem. Something about the destruction of the level and satisfying death of your enemies with almost flash game esque opponents makes this game so silly and satisfying. Waking up from a new pod, different classes that change>??. I mean this game does alot better than modern games.
Neon Chrome gets tedious. Same songs played too often, the bosses aren't particularly interesting, the antagonist likes to monologue. and you've basically seen all there is after a few hours. There's no quickdodge-like mechanic, so combat is a fairly basic experience of walking around shooting and trying not to get shot. There are moments when there's no way to avoid damage, and combat is punishing enough that I found myself favoring a specific style. Alot of the upgrades I found early on didn't support this style or were the most predictable health, speed, healing, and melee upgrades you could imagine. The game is fine, the story doesn't matter, and the experience is probably worth the most on sale.
