About
Sudden Strike 4 sends you off on three extensive campaigns set amongst the battlefields of World War II.
Commanding the Allied, German or Soviet troops, you will lead over 100 different units into battle; like the German bomber Heinkel He111, the Russian T-34 tank, the British Hawker Typhoon fighter plane and the notorious German Panzerkampfwagen VI "Tiger".

In a first for the Sudden Strike series, you can now choose from one of nine individual commanders, such as George Patton or Bernard Montgomery, who will each allow for different approaches to combat and boast unique abilities.

Prove your strategic expertise in over 20 demanding singleplayer scenarios and the challenge-focused skirmish mode.

Exploit the weak spots of tanks, set up an ambush, occupy buildings with infantry, outmaneuver the enemy with clever positioning or unleash devastating air strikes – how you approach each mission is up to you!

Modding support with Steam Workshop integration.

Optional „Pause & Play“ for more tactical depth

Sudden Strike 4 was my first contact with the Sudden Strike franchise. Before playing it, my experience with World War II RTS games mostly came from titles like Men of War and Company of Heroes, so I was curious to see what made this series so popular. After finishing the campaigns and DLCs, I think I found the answer: the original Sudden Strike probably earned its reputation years ago. Sudden Strike 4, however, feels like a franchise that stopped evolving. The game is not bad, but it reveals almost everything it has to offer within the first few hours. Most missions follow the same structure, objectives rarely become more interesting and the gameplay never develops beyond its initial formula. New maps, new armies and new campaigns appear, yet the experience remains largely the same from beginning to end. What disappointed me most is that I struggled to find anything that Sudden Strike 4 does better than other RTS games in the same genre. Mechanics such as ammunition management, vehicle repairs, artillery support and unit preservation already existed elsewhere years before this game released. The problem is not that these systems are bad. The problem is that Sudden Strike 4 does very little with them. For a game released in 2017, it often feels like the biggest upgrade over its predecessors is graphical. The core design remains extremely similar to what the franchise had already been doing for years, while other RTS series continued experimenting with new ideas, mechanics and ways to approach strategy. By the end, I did not hate the game. I simply felt indifferent towards it. It has plenty of content, but content alone is not enough when every campaign, DLC and mission starts blending together. The game never surprised me, never challenged my expectations and never gave me a reason to see it as more than an average RTS. I can understand why longtime Sudden Strike fans enjoy it, especially those who grew up with the earlier games. For me, however, it felt like a series that spent years standing still while the rest of the genre moved forward.
Slop. Full stop. As soon as you start the game, you'll notice the game's presentation that would feel right at home on a Pay-2-Win Android game app. The camera doesn't really let you zoom in or out much, so you'll be playing the entire game at the "zoom-level" you see in the screenshots. This game functionally serves as one-sided WW2 propaganda and doesn't preserve any shades of historical accuracy from the conflict. It's goes for the big and dumb "Saving Private Ryan" approach. I'd argue this entire franchise was rendered obsolete after the 3rd game by Men of War 2: Assault Squad.
Bear in mind Sudden Strike 4 was released in 2017, so it's nearly 10 years old as I write this review. I prefer Company Of Heroes 3 to Sudden Strike 4 - but that's not to say Sudden Strike 4 is terrible. A big difference between the games is how your tanks and vehicles in SS4 need to be refueled and re-armed mid battle. So logistics are quite important. Some of the missions are strange in that if you do what you are originally asked to do you will lose - say take a bridge - because as soon as you try you get overwhelming force attacking you and are told to retreat. So instead to win you send 1 unit to that bridge and keep the others in reserve where they will be told to retreat to. Makes it a little unrealistic, Anyway I love WW2 games and I'd rate Sudden Strike 4 a solid 6.5 vs Company Of Heroes 3 a 7.5. I will be buying Sudden Strike 5 which is a 2026 release when it goes on sale.
