Game played well reminding me of some of the monster wargames in the past
The game engine and system work for quite a number of differeent eras and settings. From pre-Civil War to early 1900s, the AI seems able to handle itself adequately against a human of average skill and experience. Supply is a tiny bit confusing, but I think that's my issue, not the game's. Lots of scenarios and campaigns, so even with 71 hours in, I have only played US Civil War a few times, both PBEM and solo, and a very few games with the Paraguay campaign, so far only from the Brazilian side. I like that careful planning and a bit of audacity can be rewarded, while recklessness is always punished. This game plays well as a solo vs. AI, and absolutely shines in PBEM.
It's ok. The combat results needs some work ie: you can beat an enemy unit down from 10 to 1 and it'll stand it's ground only to be fully reinforced next turn. Also, merely entering a hex and 'discovering' a nearby enemy unit means your unit will take a beating- sometimes completely destroyed. These features make it difficult to advance and my first game as the south was more like a WW1 battlefield.
Its not overly cumbersome to move units. Everything is straightforward and easy to understand. The AI is sneaky, and will beat you if you are careless. The new unit levels seem very accurate. The emphasis on the naval aspect is historically accurate, Has some nice add on games. Overall the organization is clear and easy to adapt to. Its the best Civil War game I have played.
So far, I have only played the "Paraguay Under Siege" scenario, as it covers a military campaign I know well (I have even visited the battlefields in the region depicted on the map). I find the scenario's concept phenomenal. The siege of the fortified Humaitá region—as the game effectively illustrates—was far from a static or tedious campaign; it demanded countless battles and acts of bravery from both opposing sides. Meanwhile, a cholera epidemic was devastating both armies, a fact the game also portrays well. My only issue was not understanding why ships cannot bombard troops along the riverbanks. All in all, it was a highly challenging experience that, for me, made the modest cost of the game and its expansion well worth it.
So stupid you cannot stack units on same Hex.
Enjoyable game with changing fortunes throughout the war. The previous WW1 game was a bit of a slog- this is more fluid.
Awesome Game!
An operational level game covering all theatres of the civil war. You get to decide what units to build, from Brigades to Divisions to Corps, so there is a high degree of re-playability. The AI opponent is quite respectable.
