I have never felt more like a russian general than in this game. The infinite number of infantry being sent into enemy defensive positions only for them to fall back peaks my dopamine.
If you like other Eugen games you’ll like this. It’s a bit different than the first game, the battles are much larger scale and things generally move a bit faster but at its core it’s similar to the first game. It’s got good deck building and strategy and very good variation in divisions and units. All in all it’s pretty good.
Love this game. I am not good at it. And I only play single player. But it is great to command these fronts, with these units, and see it from their POV. I like to pause and issue commands and then watch the chaos unfold. Well worth the $20 I paid. I grabbed some DLC for unit variety as well.
Finally got all the DLC's, I have yet to get bored with all the content.
I wanted to like this game. I tried a few different modes, thought the army general tabletop/ total war esque mode would be great, but it has so many shortcomings. The UI is ugly and hard to navigate. You drop into a battle, and all your units are categorised into random groups with russian names? The AI behaves weirdly, especially your own aircraft. Ctrl groups often just disappear minutes after you set them. Battles are generally quite unintuitive, alot of important actions are very subtle. Lots of weird choices, attack move is called 'hunt'? I don't know. There's also a big emphasis on scenarios and historical battles in the army general mode and the skirmish mode. Those are cool, but honestly in a game like this I'd rather just customise my own starting position / battle setup. E.g. pick a year, pick a starting battlegroup and go from there. I guess the army general mode isn't that interesting if you can't recruit units of your own choosing, and just have to use what is already out there. I'm not going to refund, Eugen make some great games. This one wasn't it.
THE SS IS BAD AND EXTREMELY EVIL THEY SHOULDNT BE GLORIFIED EVERYTIME I PLAY 5TH SS PANZER DIVISON WIKING I GET RLLY HAPPY AND IT SHOULDNT BE THIS WAY.
The game is great, BUT... I wish you could pause the game while playing cooperative multiplayer with a friend. I can't believe this isn't a feature or a mod, it's really stupid.
Singleplayer is total ♥♥♥♥, good on paper but falls apart when you realise its going to be the same battle over and over again. For years now the multiplayer scene is half alive, either you get stomped or most of your team is AFK because it takes that long to find a game. SD2 was supposed to be about 1944 Eastern Front and instead it got diluted with ♥♥♥♥ that completely doesnt fit in just to cash in on the DLCs, some of which are mix and match type battlegroups that border on reskins. Gameplay mechanics which are supposed to make the game more authentic yet bumrushing the enemy with a stack of armored cars is a valid strategy. Planes that are less responsive than the Titanic.
Really enjoying this game so far as someone who has only been playing for 23 hours so far. Great controls and the scale is really impressive. Katyushas and off map artillery still give me nightmares.
